That's not very nice Margaret, the problem is with royalty is that they cannot reply to such 'assumptions' so you can throw out insults willy-nilly as you feel like it .. they are human beings at the end of the day, without the luxury of response .. :(

Not even gonna' bother to read your: probably useless link on this occasion Margaret .. all I feel is that patriotism is definintely linked to our history of royalism. I am proud of our royal family and the history that the U.K. provides with the rest of the world.

Ok, they have no power anymore, so what's your problem ? They provide us with the best Marketing Service that is respected in all areas of the globe.. Republican ?.. tush ... that guillotine would soon be in use again, n'est pas ?

Luckily the banner of the Union Jack represents quite a few things, freedom of speech being one, I would add that I am a patriot, I have no “ism’s” as regards sexuality and my intent is never one of disrespect. :)

We are not truly a democratic country until we rid ourselves of a hereditary monarchy.

I don't want to fall out with you Kate - shall we just agree to differ?

Not differ exactly Margaret, just that we have worked in different careers: me in Sales/Marketing, you as Government based (open to any misunderstanding). The Royal Family is a business for us to use as best we can to promote our image to the rest of the world, and I think they are the Trump Card.

Congratulations to Edward and Sophie.

If you have watched the Monday evening series about the Queen and the work she does for our country, I'm sure that you will all agree that there couldn't be a better ambassador.

She earns her keep. I'm a royalist and proud of it.

Seems to me the H.M.the Queen isn't that much different than one or two "Accywebbers" she lives in a council house , has a load of kids with a foriegn born chap (though she did marry him) , probably doesn't even have to pay council tax since she lives on benefits (govt. handouts) ,
Maybe not though , how many of the above can say they have carried out over 400+ civic duties a year for the past 50 odd years without ever calling in sick, and looking cheerfull all the time even though they are now in their 80s .
The idea of a Cherie Blair type (dressed up as a Spanish Infanta or Eva Peron in virginail white to meet the pope) as first lady of the UK is laughable

Ah, so that's why you slung your hook and cleared off to a foreign country. Why don't you come back here to one of the highest taxed countries in the world and contribute to her upkeep?

Let's see........... how old is the Queen now? Well past retirement age isn't she? And still working hard as a representative of our country abroad. The Royal Family is known as "The Firm" for good reason. They don't just sit there on their rear ends and have life handed to them on a plate. They are far more of an asset than a liability. Yes it's a far more lavish lifestyle than any of us on here are ever likely to have but I wouldn't want to swap. The Civil List is nowhere near as long as it used to be, and I agree with that. There comes a point where some lesser royals need to earn their keep because they are far less significant than those closest to the throne. I think it would be a sad day indeed if we ever became a republic.

The Monarchy Today > Royal finances > Financial arrangements of other members of the Royal Family

The Queen and Prince Philip are the only ones who get an allowance from the civil list. The others that do get an allowance are repaid by the queen.

She certainly is. So what's the point of keeping her and Phil the Greek in unbridled luxury in Buckingham Palace? Stick the pair of them in a home for the bewildered and open Buckingham Palace to the public full time and make some money out of the place.

Thanks for that Shillelagh.

It's also worth pointing out the the Royal Family employ people to work for them so those who want to scrap the royals would also be scrapping a lot of jobs.

i dont understand! the queen pays for others out of her allowance? does this not mean that they are all being paid for by the tax payers?
