Sellafield

I heard some rather alarming stories about indidents at Sellafield today. Does anyone know why the plant is closed at the moment? Something to do with a tank of radioactive liquid.

I found this in the Independant dated Feb 3rd
'Shambolic' Sellafield in crisis again after damning safety report - Green Living, Environment - Independent.co.uk

an extract-
Two of the three evaporators have been shut due to safety problems, and there are continuing "difficulties" with vitrification. But the most alarming issue is the failure of equipment needed to cool the waste, which could, at worst, lead to an explosion, scattering radioactivity across much of the country. Studies suggest that for every tank that exploded 210,000 people would die from cancer.

In the late 80s we used to put our touring caravan on a site at Ainsdale for the month every August. My husband used to go sea fishing with another chap who had his caravan and boat on the site. At first we used to cook what he caught, particularly mackerel, but then we started noticing "burn" marks on some of the fish. We had to assume it was contamination from Sellafield.
