Panorama
To-nights Panorama (BBC1 10.35pm) is centred on Blackburn and Blackpool. It seems that Lancashire Police have set up specialist teams to deal with gangs of Asian men grooming young girls for sex. An asian group have accussed the police of not taking strong enough action against these men for fear of being called racists, this program should be worth watching

It's good to see Muslim leaders condeming the police's inaction, for fear of being seen as racist.

Re: Panorama
Its just been on Granada Reports about it. The footage they showed on there were at the car park of the train station (next to bowling alley) and in the Cathedral grounds. Its frightening what goes on so close to you house. This sort of thing you associate with major cities.

I'm off to the theatre tonight with Lettie and Sparks, but have just set the video. I'd hate not to have an opinion to share tomorrow.:D |
Re: Panorama
The Maltese were the specialists at pimping 20 or 30 yrs ago - looks like they are still at it now, according to this link

Re: Panorama
It's nothing new, the Telegraph have been on about it for a couple of years and it's been going on for quite a few years prior to that.
The problem of sexual grooming was first highlighted by the Lancashire Telegraph in 2006, when we launched our Keep Them Safe Campaign. It aims to raise awareness of the problem of local girls who are befriended by predominantly Asian groups of men, who shower them with gifts and attention then give the youngsters drink and drugs. The teens are then forced to perform sex acts in return - sometimes with more than 10 men a night. |
Re: Panorama
Ive got the radio on and they were talking about it - they had the bloke who made the film on and did you know there are only 3 specific teams in the country who deal with this - and two of them are based in Lancashire.

The problem was first brought to public attention in 2004, by Channel 4, in a programme whose transmission was at first delayed by protesters who said it was racist. The LET jumped on the bandwagon, sloppy journalism, no suprises there, two years later.;) http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main...21/ixhome.html |
Re: Panorama
Having just seen the programme I thought it was fairly well balanced, and happily not sensationalist.
Great to see the community leader from Blackburn saying the police shouldn't be afraid to tackle these gangs, and that they weren't Asian criminals, they were criminals full stop. More power to him, and to other moderate thinking community leaders. |
Re: Panorama
I watched the program and agree with Rindi, I saw the telegraph report, but they always seem to look at issues half heartedly. Its hard to think that this thing goes on so near to home, it must be a worry for any parents who have young teenaged girls, because it was evident that these girls were not just from Blackburn. To me though the thing that really struck me was the fact there are only 3 specialist groups in the country, with only two officers in the Blackburn unit. The list of other so called crimes which figure in front of grooming for sex, well just amazed me to say the least. Of course the government wheeled their token mouth piece out, as usuall, bUt he didn't impress me, they talk the talk but they don't walk the walk

Re: Panorama
Having just watched this programme have got to agree with what has been said. Would just like to add it would be reassuring to be told that the relevant departments acted on parents concerns promptly. Found the fact that it took social services three months to be actively seen to be sorting things very disturbing to say the least.
