I remember that in the late fifties at one of the Accy Grammar speech days, the visiting speaker was Group Captain Leonard Chesire VC ... a real hero, and such an unassuming, soft spoken, gentle man.

Re: 65 Anniversary of the Dam Busters Raid
I read somewhere the other day .... damn memory, it's the second thing to go and viagara doesn't help ... that they are going to do a remake of the Dam Busters, written by Stephen Fry and directed by Peter Jackson. Should be a good show with 21st century special effects.
I wonder if, in these politically correct times, whether there will be a place in the movie for Guy Gibson's dog:rolleyes: |

Re: 65 Anniversary of the Dam Busters Raid
Nigger the labrador was killed (knocked over by a car) 65 years ago today while Guy Gibson was bombing the Ruhr Dams.
Probably most of Britain first became aware of the dam buster raids when the film was made in 1955. I remember going to see it at the Palladium and falling deeply in love with Richard Todd, who played Gibson - well, I was only 12 at the time. It left me with a serious appreciation of what an air force blue uniform can do for a man - I married an airman 7 years later - and an ability to instantly recognise the Lancaster bomber, one of only about 4 planes I can identify on sight. Seriously, though, we owe so much to those men and to all the thousands of others who contributed, one way or another, to defeating the Nazis. Bless 'em all. |
Re: 65 Anniversary of the Dam Busters Raid
The only surviving pilot who was involved in these raids was on the news tonight, we do owe a lot to these men for their bravery.

It may be that our younger members are not aware of what was done in the name of freedom and how many lads and lasses lost their lives so that we could live in peace in our country. That peace is threatened at the moment by yob's who do not know any different and the plot seems to be lost. Police have the powers to stop this but the power they have is undermined by the powers that be and the lack of 'Street Wise' magistates who administer the law. I choose to live outside the UK. not because I have fallen out with my country of birth but by choice....The sun has a lot to do with it. In Spain if you give a police officer a load of lip you will get a belt round the ear and if you don't stop when told to you will be shot. I think there should be a dedicated panel of Magistates and Judges who specialise in anti social behavoir and don't take any notice of the meanderings of the defence lawyers ' He or She was from a broken home' That is tripe.............I was from a home that lost my father, so what. Iv'e said enough. http://www.cwgc.org/ |

Re: 65 Anniversary of the Dam Busters Raid
Yes, Respect too to both of them Royboy, both my Grandfathers (no longer with us) fought in the war.
This film is an iconic movie, how can you remake it. Okay so we can get some glitz and make the CGI look great, then it may be as good as Pearl Harbour, or U-571 (which tells the story of how the Americans found and decoded the Enigma Machine, funny that I thought it was us and the Poles!). Hollywood would not make a film in which there where no American Heros, and as for calling the dog, niger, that would be a big no no. |
Re: 65 Anniversary of the Dam Busters Raid
Apparently in the U.S. the dog's name in the original, classic film was redubbed to 'Trigger'. Though Peter Jackson is quoted as saying that in the re-make the name of the dog is still undecided.
Since this film is based on an actual events, and real people, a spade should be called a spade, and Guy Gibson's dog should be called Nigger, because that is what it's name was. |

They'll probably write the dog completely out of the story - save on the arguments.
