The problem is, Eric, we've not been given a chance to say "no" by the politicians. Brown promised to give us a vote on the European Consititution...then broke his promise. Cameron promised to give us a vote on the European Constitution...then broke his promise. Neither party will give us a referendum on membership of the EU, because they know what the answer will be...and they only believe in democracy when it's going their way.

The mainstream politicos' attitude to the EU is well illustrated on Accyweb. Tories like Jaysay and AndrewB like to pretend that we can remain part of the EU but still retain our independence. Labourites like Bernard, Graham and Claytonender maintain a deafening silence on the subject. So much for genuine democracy!

As for the venerable Ben Johnson, he'd gone into well-earned retirement by the time I left AGS. His successor, Ralph Bailey's parting homily to me was: "Mark my words, you'll come to a bad end." Still time to prove him right! :D

Had the Russkies invaded Europe back in the '60s and established a Union of Soviet European Republics (including the UK) then the simple fact is that we would have more democracy today than we currently have under the so called EU.

Wll you can keep an eye on the webcams to make sure it doesn't happen.

The idea of Russians invading Europe was never on ... the gap between their military capability and that of NATO (short form for United States of America) was always too wide. One of the major reasons for the collapse of the Soviet Union was its attempt to maintain its military strength on the basis of an ailing economy. In fact, at the end of WWll, the Russians were in danger of being attacked by the western allies ... Operation Unthinkable. When considering the idea of a Russian offensive, it would be advisable to take into account the Soviet casualties in the war: for every US solier KIA, sixty Russian soldiers died. Like Britain, the Soviet Union never really recovered from the two World Wars ... and the Americans noisily filled in the power vacuum created by the devastation in Europe.

I apologize for the spelling - maybe it's the 18 hour days I've been putting in. Or maybe it’s having lived with the French too long. In any case, feel free to pop over and give us a hand if you worried about illiterate programmers at the helm :)

It should get exciting this weekend all being well. So far, nothing’s really happened apart from the beams have been contained… This weekend we accelerate from 450GeV towards 1.2TeV. Then we’re in new territory…

Sounds like a lot of fun; like discovering fire, the wheel, the New World, splitting the atom, and landing on the moon, all rolled into one ... "to boldly go" (sorry about the split infinitive;):D) ....
