There were loads of police vans and cars at a house on the 11th December. I forgot to bother posting about it though because I had only just got home from uni. Near that children's play centre... the detached house that stands alone.

That was my first thought. but if you read they found a body , had a couple of suspects then all that was left was a suspision of the victim.

All these bad things happening seem to be getting closer and closer to me.

My condolences to the guys family, his mother came into my work today and its a shame for any parent to have to bury thier children especially under these circumstances and at this time of year.

I was very close friends with Shane Fitzpatricks son at school, funnily enough we wrote something together which was brought up in the investigation and it brought back a lot of fond memories. It's funny what things bring up memories from years ago.

My post is confusing things a little, It was meant to mean the lad arrested for the recent "murder" not the Shane Fitzpatrick one

I had to laugh when I saw your message about the area going downhill a bit Pip! Like murderers are a product of a bad area... or even a bad upbringing... murderers don't exactly follow a set pattern, it's one of the few things which the classes are merged with. Animal instinct to rip each other apart for survival and all that. Then there are the sick people who treat it like some sort of sport and prey on people for the hell of it.

No type of murder is particularly specific to a certain class or area. Especially not in this economic climate when there are a lot of desperate people.

I hate to say it, season of goodwill and all that, but you're wrong again.

Your chance of being a victim of crime very much depends on your 'class' (wealth/poverty), and which area you live in. All recorded data on the subject back this up.

Murder: an example of crime and inequality

The risk of being murdered is not equally distributed across society. Instead, the poorer the place you live in, the more likely you are to be murdered.
  • People living in the poorest 10% of wards in Britain are about 5.7 times more likely to be murdered than those living in the least poor (richest) 10%.
  • This ratio is increasing with time: people living in the poorest 10% of Britain, are 182% more likely than average to be murdered, while the likeliness of those in the richest 20% being murdered has been falling over time.

yerself 24-12-2008 20:18

Re: just heard this...

Never mind bad area or bad upbringing. You're not left-handed are you blazey?

Behavioural scientists claim that there is a strong positive correlation between the number
of left-handed people and violent crimes, specifically murder. The recent report suggests
that left-handers have the advantage in hand-to-hand confrontations. This competitive
advantage may explain why levels of homicide and left-handers in society show such a
strong link.

Tell that to that family who had to bury their daughter and granddaughter the other day after their son in law decided to kill them all in their mansion with a bullet to the head and a blazing inferno.

You're never going to have an equal balance of statistics relating to ANYTHING in society, nothing ever works that way.

And no I'm not left handed and funnily enough I'm not a murderer either. Thou shalt not murder and all that jazz.

The facts are there, plain and simple.

The lower down the socio-economic scale you are, and poorer the area you live in, the greater the risk of you being a victim of crime, including being murdered.

Therefore your sweeping statement was wrong.

onlyme 25-12-2008 06:50

Re: just heard this...

Blazey, do you run around with your eyes closed, and fingers in your ears singing 'I cant hear you'????

Of course violent crimes and murder are more likely in poorer areas. Look at Brixton, Hackney, Moss Side....., also the term 'desperate times for desperate measures'.

In a low crime area, house prices go up so only wealthier people can afford to live there. High crime rate, prices go down.

The odd exception hardly disproves a whole load of statistics.

blazey 25-12-2008 14:25

Re: just heard this...

I suppose it depends on what type of murder you are referring to I guess. Obviously in areas with gang crime you will get more murder by stabbing for instance, and the odd gun crime.

I reckon its a given that you get more middle class people killed with shotguns :p

I studied sociology at college though and recall how statistics like that are manipulated by people to make it look like there are drastic differences in the numbers between classes, but murder, rape, and other high end crimes only make up a small percentage of our crime rate in the first place and the small the number the less the percentages are that different.

I don't think it particularly matters what class you are though when someone is on a serial killing spree, so we've all got a chance. Same with terrorist attacks.

And I can see why poorer people may commit crime, but I don't see why poor people would be the targets... its not like they have anything substantial to take... the only benefit is poorer security I guess. Don't hear of many homeless people getting mugged though.

Yes you do, it happens all the time.

I take it you haven't spoken to many homless folk?

They are amongst the most vunerable people in society when it comes to being victims of crime, when the only security they have is that they hope they wake up when someone steals their meagre possessions from under them.

Blimey, it must be ever so cosy living in a bubble, rather than in reality.

I think that blazey always has the same problem Rindi, how old is she 19/20, okay she's a very intelligent young lady who is studying at University to make a better life for herself in the future, but there are a lot of use who didn't take that route, but what we did was got a sound education in the University of life and there are a lot of people on here have come out of that with Honours Degrees, yet only time will tell if blazey achieves the required standards in both forms of education;)

What is it like on your pink cloud..... Homeless people have nothing worth stealing...

What about drugs... alcohol , their makeshift beds and bedding ...the clothes on their backs even: also some very sad people out there think its a laugh to kill them: set fire to them: rape them the list is endless: and all crime related... though often not reported ( its not good for the police to have un-detected crimes on their books)

I studied sociology at college ( have you ? )

Sorry magpie that wasnt an attack on you personally.
In the past sex offenders on here have been hung , drawn and quartered. this guy was a known sex offender who got his "just deserts" IMO

I took this from the observer feedback and it sums it up IMO..

The fact remains he is a convicted rapist! Do the people of Accrington really want to be looking at this convicted rapist's photogrpah every time they go on the Observer's website? I don't think so. Jodie, would you still say he WAS a nice guy if he had raped you or your daughter? Let no-one forget he is a convicted rapist

he was only 16 when he did it too

makes you wonder how the mind works at that age

Its hard to decide what to think or believe when the rumour mill gets underway too. I was told that his Victim was a "kiddy fiddler" and that he did this as some kind of revenge for what She had done to Him!! Dont know if thats what happened or not, and of course, either way does'nt make it right, but if it is then i suppose it offers some kind of explanation, its all a bit too sick to comprehend really.

Its certainly seems that quite a few people have been involved in his Murder though and it does'nt strike me as a random act of violence by them. Theres obviously some bad history behind it, one way or another.

I dont know what he did, or who he did it too, but this does some like a reprisal. Did he only just get out of prison or something , maybe his victims family have tracked him down

Suppose that rules out a reprisal, unless they were friends of his mother. You`ve got to think the two people still out there are abroad by now though.

I'll certainly agree with that statement

I heard that he was abused when he was little. Don't know if that's true or not. I've also heard the murder was nothing to do with what he's done in the past. Again I don't know if that's true either. There are a lot of rumours abound, I don't suppose anyone will ever know the true details of why, what and where. And do we really want to? I wouldn't fancy putting myself in danger by knowing too much to be honest. Just my opinion.

I can see where your coming from cherokee, but irrespective of what this chap did in the past, he didn't deserve to be dumped in a culvert after being murdered, to say he got his just deserts is OTT, maybe if people like this got a punishment to fit the crime in the first place, incidents such as this may not occur in the future, but while sentencing continue to be a joke in this country, incidents such as tis will carry on taking place until there is a real change to our justice system, where offenders do get their just deserts

His mother made an "emotional plea" for information about him in the observer - strange thing to do if she was his victim!

Detectives investigating the murder of Alan Lee Street in East Lancashire have made a further arrest.

A 43 year old man from Padiham presented himself at a police station in Edinburgh on Wednesday afternoon and will now be brought to Burnley for questioning.

Earlier today, a 51 year old man from Accrington was arrested on suspicion of murder after attending Burnley Police Station.

Detective Superintendent Neil Hunter from the Force Major Investigation Team said: “Today’s arrests will enable me to further my enquiry into Mr Street’s death. I would like to thank the local media for their help as I believe that their support may have contributed to today’s developments. I would also thank those members of the public who have contacted us with information but would further appeal for those people who know something but have not yet been in touch to do so by calling Burnley Police on 01282 425001.”
