Appreciating Accrington
Since living in Lancaster, I've felt like it's overshadowed home a bit, what with its quaint little independent shops and multi-cultural twice a week market, maze of alleys with their charming coffee shops and numerous pubs with great selection of ales.
But the other day my friend showed me a video on youtube made by young people in his local town to portray the place they live, and it showed things which all of a sudden made Accrington seem soooo much better. YouTube - newall green crew I'm glad Accrington isn't THAT bad, though I do wonder how long it'll take before it is... |

Re: Appreciating Accrington
ok, sorry for the slight thead wander , but watching that video and reading a couple of previous postings makes me kind of glad I got out of the area.
Only night time problem I ever had when I was "a Lad ' living in the area was one late night after saying goodnight to a lass who lived on lower Barnes St. and walking home to Arrod over the fields from Clayton , and hearing a noise and seeing this "thing" , two legs, torso and a neck , only when I got to the other side of the brook and halfway up the hill did I turn round and look back ... I'd been looking at a horse head on in the next field . :D :D guess them days are long gone , sorry for thread wander |
Re: Appreciating Accrington

I guess its a nationwide problem these days though is'nt it. Lets be honest, i bet not one of us on here would now say that they would feel comfortable and safe walking home on their own late at night, i certainly dont! Always use a taxi now. Best Regards - Taggy |
Re: Appreciating Accrington
I have worked evenings for quite a few years... finishing at 10 or 11pm
Walked home every night at that time and felt safe Although I'm quite young and carry a very heavy handbag:D |

Re: Appreciating Accrington
i work in accrington town centre till 7pm it was till 10pm but they changed it last year, we are the only shop open until that time and even though i have panic buttons i still sometimes get that feeling that im not safe, especially as i have to lock up the store in the dark when there are still people on the street. i usually get gangs of teenagers in who between 8 of them buy one thing and swear and make a mess of the place. i do tell them to clean up after themselves and to stop swearing and if they get out of line i do ask them politley to leave but its only a matter of time before they tell me what to do and start giving me abuse. then i either walk to the bus stop and wait for the bus in the dark which again is pretty intimidating, most of the time my fella has to pick me up as he doesnt like me walking to the bus stop and he isnt even from accy but yet he knows how pretty bad it can get. its bnad to say this about my home town i know but at the end of the day i do feel threatened half of the time.

Get real. If you know someone who owns guns, and presumably not the type of people who go huntin'/shootin'/fishin'/, I would say it was your public duty to inform the police. Lots of people carry guns & knives supposedly for show....then they use em. |

why not reportthem before they get chance to use them mind you i dont blame you not reporting them , mainly because your picture is on here and your saying you know people who have guns not having a go at you but you never know whos reading this site  edit: somone beat me to it lol |
Re: Appreciating Accrington

I'm actually lost for words here...

Re: Appreciating Accrington
i know alot of people have done things that are against the law that is serious yes i know that owning a gun is one unless they have a licence in alot of towns if you snich then you and your familiy get subjected to alot of trouble from the people who you upset, im asking now as you have made me curious i will get back to you and let you know!!
|
Re: Appreciating Accrington
These law abiding citizens. You don't know whether they have licences...presumably not, if that is all they supposedly carry them for...protection. doubt you know whether they have bullets either.
Maybe when these sort of issues start to affect you and yours, you will think twice about whether you think it acceptable or not..but then agian you are not sure are...coz you won't snitch. |
Re: Appreciating Accrington
ok just i just text them and came outright with what ive said, i wrote " heya, how are ya? quick question, do you have a licence for the gun? sorry to be a pain but im in discussion with someone tb"
they rang me back! laughing they said yes i do and what have i ( meaning me) started now? i mentioned that id gotten into a discussion about the gun etc. so panic over they have a licence and have actually gotten rid of the gun now as they have a child on the way and dont want to have the gun around a child, so sorry they dont have a gun now, just a bump. |

And before you ask, yes, me and mine have stood up to drug dealers who thought they could rule the roost. And yes, we did stand up to intimidation trying to stop us going to court, including them trying to run one of my sons over, ( others backed down, but we didn't.) and threatening to shoot them if they did. So maybe you see why I can't understand why you are so cool about people you know carrying weapons of any sort. :( |

so no hit on my neigbours cat then :(

Re: Appreciating Accrington
To be quite honest Carla, I can't believe you own up to having friends who own/have owned guns, or carry knives, or weapons of any description.
|
Re: Appreciating Accrington
im not ashamed of my friends why should i be? everyone has a black sheep either in the familiy or friends? like i said no one is perfect?

Re: Appreciating Accrington
There are lots of things that can be used as an offensive weapon in the wrong hands...
Baseball bats for one, we can't ban them can we? |
Re: Appreciating Accrington
surprising that there are no comments on the latter half of this thread, considering the number of people that have viewed it?
Does everyone think it is normal to carry a gun then, to protect yourself? Maybe it's just me then......:( |
Re: Appreciating Accrington
Carrying a weapon in Accy should be compulsory as it is a very very dangerous place at night. The best one's would be job offers and an invite to drug and booze rehab.:p
Sorry Caz couldnt resist. It was either that or a vip invite to the grand opening of the next pound shop. :D |

Re: Appreciating Accrington
First off serious hunters have their guns licensed and locked up safely when not in use.
I cannot understand why anyone would want to have a gun, I would have no hesitation in letting the police know if I knew someone owned a gun illegally that would include my own family. Sadly Accrington now sounds a very dangerous place to live. The fact that some of you personally have been victims of some violence is awful and I can appreciate how frustrated you must feel when it seems that the violence is escalating and the police cannot do a lot about it. 21yrs ago when I left England youth offenders were on a serious rise and there was a lot of debate about whether they should be tried as adults rather than young offenders. Clearly it did get worse. Maybe I am wrong but I get the feeling that many people across the U.K would say they no longer feel safe regardless of where they live. |

I wouldn't consider Accrington to be such an unsafe place to be at night. Just use common sense as you would wherever you are at whatever time of day. If I knew someone with an unlicensed gun, I would be a little worried about why they have it. I would consider reporting to police, depending on how close this person was to me, if they where a friend I would try to talk them into getting rid(or ask to borrow it and go have some fun, oops did I really type that:D), but fortunately I don't have any friends that would have an unlicensed gun, I don't think. |
Re: Appreciating Accrington
i have never in my life felt that i should stop quitting just because people dont like what i say? why should i start now?? im not proud of people who own weapons but just because i know people who have had a weapon does not mean that it will stop or that i can make it stop. i think that a few people know that no matter how many times you try and tell the police something they never listen until something happens.
and no i am not blaming the police as i have alot of respect for them. or am i just the unlucky one that whenever i need help i get it 3 days later?? |

Last week after playing pool i walked home from Bash ... it was about 10.30pm and it was either wait 20 mins for a bus or walk. I was just passing some houses and a car went past with young lads in it who shouted out the window at me as i walked down the road. Why do they do this?

Re: Appreciating Accrington
Hang on here though..now I've got this image of Accrington as some sort of wild west town.. bods walking around tooled up with shooters!.. I don't think that is reality is it?... and as for wether these people have a gun license for a gun is irrellevant... to my mind I can't see any reason for anyone being legally able to own a gun and ammunition.... all the arguments about sport or farmers having shotguns to protect sheep is rubbish...It's a gun..which sooner or later will be used as a weapon to rob or shoot people.
|
Re: Appreciating Accrington
as far as i am aware laws were brought in years ago that a fire arm had to be kept in a locker at a gun club and can no longer been kept in the house
i think farmers are allowed shot guns and folk who do hunting are usualy equipped with high powered air rifels and not automatic pistols or revolvers its a bit late to be googleing about but im pretty sure anyone with a gun in their house is doing so illigally no matter what licence they say they have unless of course your a farmer gamekeepers are probably allowed guns as well but only on the land they tend basicly i cant see any excuse for having a fire arm in the house but they are definatly out there in the hands of teenagers as was shown when that little boy was shot dead last year in broad day light |
Re: Appreciating Accrington
Yes Accyman I think that is the case...shotguns are held legally by grouse and pheasant shooting clubs.. and 22 rifles are legally owned (not air rifles) 22m bullet rifles...the 22 rifles were legally owned by the bloke that massacred the kids in Dunblane...that is when any thoughts of anyone being legally allowed to own guns starts to rack me!
