Hyndburn 30th celebrations - Sat 3rd July 2004

Lots of events taking place in the town centre to celebrate "30 years of service to the community"
Why are we celebrating 30 years? Whats so special about it? The local paper says its going to be the biggest party Hyndburn has ever seen? Why aren't they using any money they may have to make Broadway more attractive?

There may be delays to traffic!!! A procession will start from the Skate Park in Eagle Street at 10.45am then onto Blackburn Road to the Town Hall. Then along Blackburn Road into Church Street and on to Cannon Street then on to St James Church. The return procession will form up in Cannon Street at 12 noon and turn left into Church Street, along Blackburn Road, then back to the Town Hall.

So all you shoppers out there, take note!!!!

We picked our sons up from Boys Brigade last night and where told theres a procession on Sat morn and the BB are taking part. the note also says sorry for the short notice as they where only asked late...

I get the impression of not well organised... I wouldn't have even known about it otherwise... would anyone else? 30 years to organise it and only invite peope to take part in the procession on the same week..

I noticed that "The Observer" carried a programme of events for the weekend under the headline 'HYNDBURN'S 30TH BIRTHDAY Weekend of partying as borough celebrates.'

"10:45 Procession led by Accrington Pipe Band and local school children sets off from the Eagle Street skate park.
11:00 Civic Celebration Serviceat St. James' Church.
11-3:00 Interactive children's activities, including face painting and nail art at Accrington Library.
11-3:00 Displays by community groups in the lecture room of Accrington Library, where visitors will also be able to submit ideas for the St.james fountain area.
12 noon Procession leaves St. James' Church for the Town Hall where a cake will be cut to mark the 30th anniversary followed by a civic luncheon.
7:30 Seventies night at Accrington Town Hall in aid of the Hyndburn Mayoral Charity Fund. Tickets £4.50.
Sunday
4:30pm Unveiling of Accrington Pals Memorial outside St James' Church."

In addition it was mentioned that there was also a 'Radio Roadshow' on Broadway A 'Family funfair' and a 'Continental Market'.

WoW! Our cup runneth over! And to add to the fun it was also announced that the events had attracted extra funds from The Home Front Fund and local businesses, including Ossie Mills, Naylors the printers, Accrington and Rossendale College and Accrington Flower and Garden Group.

Does life get any better than this? I am just so sorry to have missed it - I was scheduled to be sticking pins in my eyes that day.

Unless I've got the wrong end of the stick I would have thought that if anything it should be HBC funding Accrington & Rossendale College not t'other way end.

I'm afraid that 99% of the people I interact with on a regular basis were totally apathetic towards the 30th celebrations myself included (and indeed the fact that Hyndburn is 30). Until there is something proper to be proud of then this will be the case.

Colleges are independent and have to sort out their own finance.
