Re: Immanuel by election result

I stand corrected it was about 32% 1,175 from approx 3,550. Last time in 2007 1,360 voted. The campaign from both sides was street by street, door by door.

People are clearly fed up and their reason for not voting is from the national news media.

The sad thing is we have never seen such a destructive force and it is all against Labour at the moment. It is however against the Government of the day and the next Government is in for a shock when they face the same barrage.

Its not fair to blame the candidates. More like the voters could not be bothered to go and vote. That and the fact many people have lost all interest in politics as they feel all parties are useless at the moment.

The fact that it was a by election is also another factor. Generally turnout is lower especially combined with the timing of this one which means many people are on holiday.

Turnout in Hull was 17% in some areas at last years locals, and that's with the whole council going for election not just 1 ward!

Great result, I'm actually surprised the turnout was 32% at a by-election in holiday weeks, Think that must be the biggest Tory Majority in Immanuel for a while 133, so the misnomer leaflets didn't work.

I think the low turnout, besides anger and general apathy towards politicans after all the scandals, is down to the fact that it's also the traditional Accrington holidays.

Although most lage industries have gone from the area, many people still take their annual holidays now. It's certainly the first week all the schools have broken up.

The roads are noticably quieter. Well I noticed they were until I've been isolated with suspected swine flu, which may be another reason people chose to stay away from the polling station.

I know both Conservative and Labour candidates offered to arrange a postal vote, when someone I know in the ward said they'd be away on holiday.

There was only a 45% turnout in the Norwich Parliamentary By-election.

Like I say the annual wakes weeks holidays might be an added reason for a low turnout. The roads and shops were noticably quiet earlier in the week.

The main reason I suspect is dismay over the allowances scandals.

Still, we've had allowance scandals here for ages, so you'd think the local population would have got used to it by now.

Noticed the Labour party were pushing the council expenses in a leaflet this week along with a letter from Dorothy (including the rise in overnight stay .. not going into this one again, will set Garinda off ). There was plenty of mention of the Labour party too !

I feel sad that Dorothy did not win this seat as was definitely voted on National Issues, and not which candidate could prove the most useful at this time. Cannot bring myself to congratulate Judith, as was not due to her capabilties itself, however, that is probably a little unfair and, hopefully, being new to the council, she will throw herself into the job with great alacrity ... so will wish her best of luck.
