Sums it up perfectly, really. Accy has everything in place to make it a thriving little centre, including the Victorian market and town halls which many other towns unwisely demolished in the modernising mania of the 60's. Add to that the superb, but neglected arcade and the quaint charm of the Warner Street area and you have a town centre with quite a lot of potential. Sadly, that potential has been squandered, thanks to the sheer stupidity of the council. :(

So how do you convince someone like me to go into Accy and not go to Asda/Tesco and the retail parks when I go shopping?

Variety of shops, none, or very few closed, some entertainment activity particularly for the children, a good clean well regulated market - indoor and outdoor, some decent cafes, indoors and out - the outside ones where people can smoke. I really is not quantum physics or brain surgery>

You're never going to stop people going to the retail parks and the supermarkets - that's a fact of life. But you could make the town centre a more attractive place for other types of shopping by offering tax breaks on empty properties. Perhaps more specialist and unusual businesses could be encouraged to move into the Arcade/Warner Street area, making it more attractive for browsers. I know these ideas have been floated before, but no one ever seems to do anything about it!

Don't want browsers Wynonie .. need buyers.

Never going to happen, but groups of shops selling the same type of goods always attracts .. for example, a textile/fashion/hand crafted furniture/jewellery Victorian Arcade so that people seeking these type of goods would have lots of shops offering all one type of goods within a short distance ... Ok.. pipe dream.

Has anyone actually put this to any of the councillors in Accrington for discussion?

The arcade we have, which was once a great place to see different things has now been dragged so far down it's lower than the gutter :(

A taxi office at the end, 2 shops converted in to what can best be described as a scrapyard for washing machines. No wonder the fancy dress shop closed down, and the little antique shop in the corner is closing. The cafe in there must be pulling their hair out, it's like a rose surrounded by thorns. Still I'm sure they can find a couple of bookies to move in

Business rates on empty properties is charged at 100% after 6 months.

I remember when that came into force and we witnessed many fires in empty commercial premises - so much so that the fire increase was markedly notable. (Premises without roofs are not taxable)

The owners of the Arndale centre are at the mercy of the council who set the level of business rates. There will come a time when the rents they receive from actively let properties is cancelled out by the business rates paid out on the empty units.

When that happens the Arndale will be making a loss - will close - and will need to be demolished by the owners in order to cut their losses.
