queen's speech

The theme of the queen's speech -
The Queen's Christmas Message 2010 Full Transcript of The Queen's Christmas Speech 2010 Royal Message Queens Christmas Broadcast to the Commonwealth
"it is as important as ever to build communities and create harmony. And one of the most powerful ways of doing this is through sport and games."

Panem et circenses - (bread and games) - Roman poet Juvenal
Bread and circuses - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
"In modern usage, the phrase has become an adjective to deride a populace that no longer values civic virtues and the public life. To many across the political spectrum, left and right, it connotes the triviality and frivolity that in popular culture is supposed to have characterized the Roman Empire prior to its decline."

History repeats itself.

The truly obscene amounts of money that New Labour committed us to spend on the Olympics Jamboree take some justifying, just be grateful that we don't have to fork out for the World Cup as well. Austerity, what austerity?

One of the most irritating sights in this country is the horrible, fawning obsequiousness that some people show towards the royal family. It comes to the fore when weddings are announced and at Christmas. Did you see those idiots standing in the snow outside Sandringham yesterday?

The worst of the worst examples of this is that donut Nicholas Witchell, the BBCs "Royal Correspondent". He makes you want to throw up.

Whoa ! Bit sharp isn't it ? Lets have a little balance in all things Gynn, would you say the same about the following ? No Worse than standing outside an arena for hours on end to get tickets for some produced "Pop star" who'll disappear up their own hoop within a couple of years.

The "SciFi Geeks" & the "Potter fans" who'll queue for days on end in all kinds of weather just for the latest Book or Film to be released. Even footie fans who'll traipse round the Country or World for that matter following their team.

All these are personal choices that these people have made themselves because it is something that appeals to them & as long as you're not forced to follow in their shadow where's the problem ? Believe me I'm not a raging Royalist, the Royal Family are just another aspect of the British way of life, take them or leave them. Queens Speech ? Turn over or switch it off. I personally can't stand all these "Reality shows", "Make me famous" or "Soaps" for that matter but I wouldn't call folk who do that is their choice & the last time I looked freedom of choice was still one of the things the UK Governments hadn't fully managed to outlaw or abolish. ;)

Actually I think the monarchy as an institution has a lot going for it. I liked the stability that it brought into the constitution during the uncertainty after the election in May.

I just find it annoying the way the personalities are turned into a soap opera.

Now Monsewer Bonaparte, lets say we do as you desire, would not the replacement in whatever form or whomever it may be not also fit your description of the present incumbents ? Family of sponging wasters, I believe your expression was. Even worse we may have the misfortune to gain a Franco, Hussein, Ahmadinejad, Amin or Mugabe ! I think the Queen is great . Some of her family may let her down , but she is beyond reproach .

Errrm, forgive me for pointing out the obvious and pouring cold water on your republican fantasies but, actually if you were born in Britain or hold a British passport you are a subject of the crown whether you like it or not. It is not something that you can opt into or out of to suit your political preferences. The only way to get out of it is to seek citizenship from another country.

Rail against it all you like mate, it does not alter the facts. Under our splendidly unwritten constitution we are all defined as subjects of the crown and since the crown is embodied in the monarch we are all subjects of Her Majesty. This can only change when the system of government changes from monarchy to a republic, or, as I said earlier, if you choose to seek the citizenship of another country.

MargaretR, you never cease to entertain. Are you suggesting there is a direct line of descent over 650 years from a prince of Wallachia(where?) to our royal family and they are therefore interbred vampires? Or potential impalers? If so can you elaborate, please. Any proof of descent or vampire activity would be most interesting.

all i am saying is that when the queen dies that the royal family public duties should die with her,and we then set up a republic, after all the royal family is after all desended from the german line off succesion,ie the house of gotha sax-coburg and also the russian royal family, not exactly british are they, the name was changed to windsor when george Vth was king, before the start of WW 1,and even now if the surname is windsor why is william and harry last name wales,as thats a heredatory title ie prince of wales, even in australia they are thinking about doing something like this. dont get me wrong the queen has done a great job but myself i think its time for a change as the UK has been a monarchy since 846 A.D (ie ruled by kings or queens)

get rid off this family of sponging wasters, and make this country a republic & SHOOT THEM ALL NOW

Somewhat different don't you agree Monsewer Napoleon ? Everyone is entitled to an opinion & it does help if you balance it out with some thought out argument to accompany that opinion, otherwise your comments will simply be construed as an incoherent rant.

Just turn up any lunch time, I'll be there on one of them, just don't expect me to turn up specially just because of your Royal Command.

It's spelt pUErile, if you are going to use words you don't understand, copy & paste don't just read & hope to remember.

She's a perfect British lady and her British grandsons William and Harry are an example to the young ones of today .

As far as the queen is concerned , even the Australians voted for her to remain their monarch in a referendum .

Long may she reign .

Well thank you kind Sir, I shall make a point of being in there tomorrow, shall we say between 1230 & 1300. I really do look forward to discussing a number of things with you. Just hope that you can be there, but really do not have any great expectations that you will be. I will be there but will not hold my breath awaiting your appearance.:D

Oh goody haven't been so apprehensive since coming up to playtime at junior school.
Are you going to do the job properly and have all your friends gathered around chanting, fight, fight?

Or are you going to stop crapping on this thread with your own brand of spoilt brat attitude and grow up?

Stop being so silly.
As I said, I just want to discuss with you a number of points - the unwelcome and unfounded remarks that you have made against me. I simply request that you give me an explanation, face to face, which I consider to be reasonable expectation.
Let us clear the air and speak man to man over a pint of beer.
I assure you, I have not asked a single person to be there with me, I do not need any back up as I have no intention of being involved in a brawl with anyone - it is many years since I did that, probably before you were born.
Still hoping you will be there to discuss these matters tomorrow.;):D

The weight of people on Accyweb don't seem to care much for Her Majesty's annual speech but it is one of the Great British traditions, a little like church in the way that most people don't participate but feel better because it's there.

I suspect there will be outcry if it ever stops being broadcast, probably including a great number who never watch it.

Had to buy my own beer, what a disappointment.
Maybe I read the thread wrong?
Never mind, perhaps the next time?
Would now be a good time to congratulate you on moving back to the U.K.? Or is it just rumour?

Not from me.

The history of the monarchy is quite interesting.

However, that's where a 'royal family' belongs.

Consigned to the history books.

If they hadn't made up the name Windsor, to hide their Germanic roots in WW I, and followed the rules of the rest of society, the Queen would have been born Princess Elizabeth Saxe-Coburg Gotha, and besides is only on the throne anyway because of the claim of the German house of Hanover.

About as British as sauerkraut sandwiches.

...and the man with a stronger claim to the throne than Prince Charles, is another Herman the German.

His Royal Highness, Franz Bonaventura Adalbert Maria Herzog von Bayern, Duke ofBavaria.

I like sauerkraut sandwiches, so long as it's on French bread with Parmesan cheese.

And what difference would that of made ? :) She was still born in London (at last looking it was still in UK ;)) thereby making her a British Citizen. Her Mum (Queen Mary) & Dad (King George v) both born in London too making her at least 2nd generation British/English. The following generations for good or bad have also been born in UK making them 3rd & 4th Generations of British/English. So most of the German bloodline has been diluted.

Nothing.

Just pointing out, if they hadn't made up a name, that would have been her name at birth.

As already stated, they have made an effort to integrate into society, and have very nearly mastered the English language too.

Re: queen's speech

Mentioned before, but sort of relevant.

My great Uncle, Cllr. Joe Aspinall, used to get into trouble because he'd never stand for God Save the Queen, being a staunch republican. Even at Buckingham Palace, which he was forced to attend, when Chairman of the old Ossy Urban Council.

I was once at a concert at the Barbican, when some lacky announced 'Would we be pleased be upstanding for Her Royal Highness Princess Michael of Kent'.

Guess who was the only person to remain, seated, even though the former hairdresser and daughter of a leading Nazi, was sat in the seat directly infront of me?

Don't know where I get it from.
