I have drawn your attention before to toxic cleaning products.
After websearching for possible causes of this toxic fumes incident, I suspect that it a lethal combination of bleach and urine.
I welcome comments from persons with chemistry qualifications.

So those of us still alive on here must have dirty toilets!

Some household products can interact- i.e. bleach and ammonia which give off a gas with chlorine compounds in it when mixed. That would be very unpleasant and could well have happened in toilets.Possibly fatal if you were very frail?
Nothing in urine to react with bleach as far as I remember.

If you have the job of changing a cat litter you will know that stale urine smells of ammonia.

I don't know if I buy into the toxic transmission thing ... but I do always, or usually, unless Sarah Palin is involved:rolleyes:, try not to dismiss wacky seeming ideas ... and when the authorities tell me something is completely safe, the word "thalidomide" pops into my head for some reason ...whatever, I do think that it would be great if there were places where we could get away from the annoying ant-social networking that seems to be taking over the world. A poem comes to mind (and I curse the muses that it's only others' poems that come to mind, never anything original:mad:) Apart from the unfortunate referrence to squirrels and their nuts, there seems to be a message in there for those who are losing touch with the planet.

You're quite right, margaretR, urea CAN break down into ammonia(looked it up) but I wouldn't have thought you'd get that much gas. Pouring neat bleach AND ammonia itself into a toilet could give a lot of gas off. I'm sure I've seen it on the bottles not to mix them.

I'm afraid I only got a C grade at chemistry O-level.
