St George's Day 2012

Happy St George's Day all, will be raising a tankard or two here at Rishton Towers later in the evening.

Nice to see so many flags and promotions around the borough once again, should be a patriotic year!

Here is an article by Jack Straw about St George...

http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisf...23/hewasbornin

It is 5 year old..

"He was born in Turkey; his mother was Palestinian. He's so multicultural we have to share him with Lithuania, Portugal, Germany, Greece, Georgia, Moscow, Istanbul, Beirut - and Palestine itself. If he ever came to England, it wasn't for long. Welcome to the world of Saint George, patron saint of England, whom we celebrate today, April 23 - the same day, by astonishing coincidence, that we celebrate the birth of the giant of English literature, William Shakespeare."

Being given saint status was most likely on a par with the way peerages are awarded today - dodgy!

It generated money for the church because pilgrimages to saint's shrines were generated.

Crikey, only Flashy has posted anything positive.

Just enjoy a day of celebrating the fact that England has some bloody brilliant things to be proud of!

Personally, I'm knocking off early today to join the celebrations at the various village taverns.

According to myth today is also the day Shakespeare was born and also died - 23rd April. Don't know how true this is? He's another one that some people say did not exist in reality...though I'm not saying I support that theory...;)

Shakespeare may not have existed, you say?

There are 38 plays and over 150 sonnets that suggest otherwise, a few busts and statues which hint at some mythical figure, a vague bit of historical evidence but other than that you may be right. His likeness is the source of some debate as it is not thought that any accurate chronicling was made during his lifetime but a bust carved after his death was confirmed as a true likeness by Ben Johnson. The birthdate of 23rd April is uncertain although he was baptised on 26th and it is historically appealing to think of him as having been born on St George's Day.

Perhaps it was that nice Francis Bacon who should be recognised instead?

I'll drink to that too!

The dizzy delights of Horace and the Spiders, Reversi, Planetoids and the all time classic Make-a-Chip.

They just don't make 'em like they used to.

It's also Herve Villechaize's birthdate today, but you will know that as a former neighbour ;)
