Plus I didn't see a thread about phobias ;) so I thought i'd make one. Some people believe that phobias develop from the body’s natural desire to protect itself,Heights,Clowns, spiders,enclosed spaces to name a few......whats your fears/phobias?

-For me, I have a fear of needles (not just any old pointed object) Aichmophobia, :eek:

Phobias, I used to be a bit irrational about wasps, I'm not that bothered about them now.
I also used to have another, non-tangible fear which I am 99.9% sure was caused by childhood experience, not sure I would call it a phobia, but it did affect me a lot for years and years. I'll not say I am totally cured, but I manage it properly now, self cured it along with a bit of help from my friends :)

I don't think I have any major phobias (except, perhaps, a touch of athazagoraphobia:D) ... at least, none have shown up in the past 66 years;) Anyway, I checked out "phobias"; and there seems to be one for just about everything. There is even "phobophobia": a fear of phobias:eek:

I suppose one could even come up with some new ones. Mangleodickaphobia: fear of getting your whatsit caught in the mangle. Suffered only by those males born before the advent of the spin cycle.;)

I won't forget you Eric :) Your right there does seem to be one for just about everything.... Mangleodickaphobia:D .....i think some folk on here suffer from Allodoxaphobia :D

I think you are wrong. We are all entitled to have one...and it doesn't have to agree with yours.

I gave this a little serious thought. Although I have a fear of thinking seriously:D But it seems to me that certain fears make sense in terms of evolution: they give us a survival advantage. Several come to mind: Brontophobia, Herpetophobia, Nycotophobia, Selachophobia etc., and have to be part of our evolutionary heritage. But others leave me scratiching my head ... I don't have a fear of that.;)

I had a little think an i cringe if i see someone fall while ice skating because i have a fear of a ice state going over there fingers :eek: I'm also afraid of anything happening to my nearest and dearest ( I can't believe i missed that, i assume we all get that tho) not a phobia i know but it's certainly a fear.

hospitals/ medical intervention, cant cope with having to go into hospital at all, even the thought of it makes me panic

In primitive conditions when coming into contact with something dangerous, the mind/body would create the optimum state for survival – a panic attack.
This type of learning is not of the intellectual or rational type. If we had to think, “Yes,this would be a good time to have a panic attack" our species would probably have died along time ago.
This type of learning takes place at an emotional level so that the response can bypass the ‘rational thinking brain’ In the past, an immediate phobic response to a predatory or poisonous animal would have been pretty useful.
Si we evolved with the ability to become phobic. In today’s world this learning mechanism often works in an inappropriate way.
