following on from my introduction thread.............

mog.... i mean stone mines where the stone was mined underground rather than dug out from the surface. yes mate i go through adits, tunnels, culverts and drains. basically if there is an opening big enough i will explore it.

DtheP47...... im not familiar with the name of the woods but i have been behind the dunkenhalgh could this be the brick tunnel you mean?

yeah D, i went through that culvert a couple of years back, sadly no photos as i was just getting in to exploring at the time and didn't have decent lighting or camera. we entered it near the viaduct where the tunnel heads under the arndale and came out just down the street from the jobcentre, the tunnel actually split 2 ways just before coming out at the jc with the other end coming out between the new accy pals health centre and the skatepark. There is a section under there that dosen't look very stable. i work with a guy that was involved in the refurb of the market hall a few years ago and he says that the culvert also runs under the market. i cant confirm this though as it twists and turns under the ground so its hard to keep track of where things would be above. if people are interested i dont mind taking another trip under there to get some photos.

It does run under the outdoor market.There is a manhole in broadway to gain access to it. Berfore we have the new market built you could gain access to the culvert via the cellars wher the fruit and veg was kept

In the late 1940s I had a friend who lived at the bottom of Milnshaw lane and when we went playing around the Broadway area which in those days was just spare ground, Broadway had wooden boards about 6 ft tall on either side painted green, from the Odeon cinema to Blackburn road. As kids we always took a short cut by going through the culvert which then came out at Bull Bridge near to the Australian pub, but I can't remember where we got in to the culvert

The culvert was open near the old fish stalls on the old market claytonx, I am guessing roundabout where Wilkinsons is now. We used to throw cabbage leaves from the greengrocers rubbish in from there and than leg it down Bull Bridge to see em' float out.
