The work was started in June 1979 and the road between Accrington and Haslingdon was opened to traffic in December 1981. As for the trees I am afraid I do not know the answer to that one. Regards, Taddy |
Re: Coppice
If I recall correctly, the tree planting, as mere whips, began around 1970. One of the people involved in making it happen was Ken (Dozy) Marsden, an English teacher at the then Accrington Grammar School, who must have been coming to his retirement about that time.
Amazing how much they’ve grown and have transformed the Coppice that was my boyhood playground. |
Re: Coppice
personally have never liked the trees on it, i think its spoilt it. but think early 70s is pretty near

the highway in the sky ie the accrington bypass was not opened till later than that think it was roundabout 1985. the haslingden bypass between rising bridge and road end ie the woolpack was opened on 4th December 1981. |
Re: Coppice
I am sorry Jen but I think that you are wrong, the dates that I put came from official sources and I will stand by my original statement that the Huncoat to the Acre roundabout at Rising Bridge was opened in December 1981 but I will stand to be corrected.

Re: Coppice
I really have to apologise Jen it seems as tough you are right and I was wrong, My info came from a mate of mine who worked for the contracter that was employed on the project (But), as he is the same age as me, maybe he was having a senior moment at the time.
