I agree totally a superb effort but but but.............THESE VERY BRAVE EFFORTS ARE ALL WELL AND GOOD WHEN THINGS GO TO PLAN. AFTER ALL THE BIGGEST ENEMY IS NATURE, AND WHEN NATURE HITS IT HITS HARD. THIS LEAVES A STRANDED OR LOST LONE SAILOR SOMEWHERE ON THE HIGH SEAS "DEAD OR ALIVE" NO ONE KNOWS. AIRCRAFT, HELICOPTERS AND RESCUE SHIPS ARE SCRAMBLED WITH UNTHINKING PEOPLE WILLING TO RISK THEIR LIVES TO SAVE ANOTHER. YES, THIS TIME THINGS WENT WELL AND ELLEN WON THROUGH AND I IN NO WAY WISH TO UNDERMINE HER ACHIEVEMENT, BUT IT COULD JUST AS EASILY HAVE GONE WRONG. THAT WOULD HAVE LEFT US WITH A MISSING POSSIBLE DAME... AND MAYBE SEVERAL OTHER WELL MEANING RESCUERS LOSING THEIR LIVES IN A BID TO FIND HER. THESE ARE THE ONES WHO SHOULD BE THE "DAMES OR SIRS." THE SUCCESSFUL SAILORS ETC. REAP THEIR REWARDS FINANCIALLY WHILST THE RESCUERS, IF NOT ON A VOLUNTEER BASIS EARN A NORMAL OR SOMETIMES LESS THAN NORMAL WAGE FOR RISKING THEIR LIVES FOR OTHERS.
DONT GET ME WRONG I KNOW LOTS OF PEOPLE IN THE PUBLIC SERVICE SECTOR AND THEY CANNOT BE STOPPED WHEN SOMEONE IS IN DANGER OF LOSING THEIR LIFE THROUGH NO FAULT OF THERE OWN, BUT WHEN PEOPLE INTENTIONALLY TAKE ON THESE ENORMOUS TASKS AGAINST ALL ODDS ,THEN WHEN THEY DO GET INTO TROUBLE THE TAXPAYER HAS TO JUMP IN AND PAY OUT HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF POUNDS FOR A RESCUE EFFORT THAT PUTS THE RESCUERS IN THE SAME RISK CATAGORY AS THE RESCUEE. WELL DONE ELLEN BUT ??????????

I'm with Fireman on this.
Agreed it's a fantastic effort, and she's a gutsy woman. A good advertisement for our gender.
But - it was something SHE WANTED TO DO and I'm really getting fed up with hearing her being called a hero. As fireman states there are plenty of people in this world more deserving of that title, who do selfless things for the good of their fellow man.
It doesnt even compare with earlier round the world sailors who achieved similar feats with a lot less support and very little technological assistance

Getting sick of the overkill in the media, and the fact that she has been made a dame annoys me too. If we have to have something like the honours system it should be used sparingly for people who trully deserve it. I know others have got them for less, but thats another issue!

This all started out as what was basically a hobby for her and was done with massive sponsorship and support. She now stands to earn in the region of £5,000,000 apparantly.
