Re: Giving Blood...

My blood is tainted - i take medication so they wont accept mine. So I've never given blood. I was told though its normally round about 1hr. There will probably be someone on here who has given blood so they'll be able to tell you. Have a look at that website it will probably be on there.

Re: Giving Blood...

Most of your time spent donating blood is actually spent waiting for your turn. Once the donation starts it takes anything from 15 minutes to 40 mins if you are a slow bleeder like me.. I have to sit watching everybody going for their brew and biscuit, knowing that the good biccies will be gone by the time my bag is full. Donating blood doesn't hurt but you can feel woozy afterwards if you have had nothing to eat before going. My advice would be to have some lunch or a good breakfast an hour before donating and don't set yourself any strenous tasks for the remainder of the day. You are perfectly capable of going back to work and doing your normal stuff that day but it is not the time to try aerobics for the first time.

As others said, about 20 mins to actually donate but you tend to spend ~1 hour in total. If you have acupuncture like I do then you need a certificate from them to say its all kosher.

I gave blood for years and got my silver badge, then I had to start taking medication for high blood pressure so that was the end of it. My daughter had been going for a few years but when she had her little girl she had to have a blood transfusion. They won't accept anyone who has had one - in case they've contracted B S E from the blood they received.

I have a friend at work who is a gay man. They won't let him give blood either due to risk of HIV but he has had a HIV test and this came back negative.I think that whether you are straight or gay if you have had a negative HIV test you should be able to give blood. After all anyone could be HIV positive, you don't need to be gay.I think it's very insulting that gay men are not allowed to give blood. He also offered to give bone marrow to the Antony Nolan trust and they didn't want that either!!

It isn't discrimination, they have to go with the odds. It's like saying that giving black people larger Vitamin D supplements is discriminative, but it's simply that less Vitamin D is absorbed by they're skin.
