Maternity units overstretched

It was on the news earlier that maternity units in some parts of the country are overstretched the cause they say is,

The rise in pregnancies because of the influx, (is that the correct term?), of EEC workers, it reminds me of the old joke:-

Mother Are you sure you're pregnant? Have you had a check up?

Daughter (sobbing), No I think he was Polish!
