Black smoke

If anyone could see any thick black smoke over Redcap way it was the farm behind the Redcap pub

Re: Black smoke
it was a hell of a lot of smoke for such a small fire

Re: Black smoke
Allotment fires - I've seen quite a few, since I live right next to a large area of allotments.
They sometimes burn 'green wood', which is organic stuff that still has lots of sap in it - that's when it produces excessive smoke. There was once such a fire only 25ft from my flat, which filled the stairwell with smoke. I went out with a bucket of water and threw it on the oil drum he was using as a brazier next to the fence. At the time I looked up the regulations about such fires, and found I had cause to complain to the local enviromental health dept. I reasoned with the man who did it and he has not done it again since. but that may be due to the arsonists who destroyed his buildings soon after - wasn't me, honest - just karma maybe:) PS on second thoughts - that smoke is too black to be organic waste - I suspect he's burning old tyres, which is very naughty of him. |

Re: Black smoke
I had an uncle and aunt who lived in Lyndhurst Ave, off Windsor Rd, and they were in Intack. Knuzden was on the other side of that estate from Blackburn Rd and the Redcap but the article says the pub's in Knuzden. Have they changed the boundaries? I'm confused.

Re: Black smoke
Oh hek West Ender ... don't start that one again ..... :D:D
If you have got the time, try this :- http://www.accringtonweb.com/forum/f...ies-40552.html |
Re: Black smoke
lol you are right westender, its NOT Knuzden
that thread was funny Kate lol |
Re: Black smoke
Oh! :o
I don't know how I missed that thread, Kate, but after reading all the various maps and directions I will admit defeat. I'm just as confused as I was before. :D Thinking back to the days when every bus had a conductor who, amongst other things, would shout out the names of the stops en route, they always shouted "Windsor Road" then, once past the traffic lights at the bottom of Shadsworth Rd, "Intack". Maybe Intack doesn't/didn't really start until after Shad but it was my relatives' address. |
Re: Black smoke
Is the Redcap pub not within the Rishton boundaries?

Re: Black smoke
The boundry between Ossy and Rishton runs down the middle of the road at the point of where The Red Cap is. FACT
|
Re: Black smoke
That makes The Red Cap in Rishton

Re: Black smoke
Sorry Katex, I agree with puffing billy.
The boundary between Ossy and Rishton ( going from west to east ) - ( from Blackburn to Accrington ) meanders along the road and in front of The Red Cap. It then veers left and follows a ditch / brook which eventually goes behind the cricket club. This is from a 1970 1:25,000 OS map. I may also have it on a 1:2,500 map but will have to check if it covers that area. I will scan the map and send it to you as proof if you like. Can you do something similar to disprove me? |

Re: Black smoke
You will find that the boundary is St. Oswalds Ward boundary and not the boundary between Oswaldtwistle and Rishton.

Re: Black smoke
Yes, Spider .. I do realise this is the electoral boundary, but has been taken up by the Royal Mail, along with such bodies as the fire service :-
Farm Building 1st July 2009, 8:37pm Incident number: 144 Number of appliances: 2 Address: Blackburn Road, Knuzden Fire involving agricultural barn 2 jets in use Behind the Old Mother Red Cap http://www.accringtonweb.com/images/new/spacer3.gif The Planning Department :- 11/07/0758 Display of 2 No. non illuminated double side post signs Old Mother Redcap Blackburn Road Knuzden Oswaldtwistle 19/11/2007 BB1 3LSMitchells & Butlers Bus service 963 Knuzden Old Mother Red Cap 16637 Love this site ... which argues in favour of Rishton ... says 'literally' as oppposed to 'officially' ? but think they protest too much : Old Mother Redcap Rishton Even some of their older maps appear to cut out the farm/pub as being in Rishton. I suspect was considered as Rishton at one time, but the boundaries have now been more defined, and in the present day is definitely Knuzden ... well, if the people that own the pub say they are in Knuzden, who am I to argue ? :D:D Apologies for the messy post, appear to have a few gremlins tonight.. |
