Now this is an interesting thread. Being a yank I wouldn't do too well here, but it's still fun to read all the posts.

JohnW, I have a friend that lives there, UNHAPPYONE. Met him through my music room on Paltalk. He told me this is a fun place to spend time, and that it didn't matter that I wasn't from there. Hope this is ok.

JohnW 27-08-2004 11:11

Re: Guess the commercial

Hey JFK, absolutely OK, I wasn't trying to infer anything to the contrary. Aren't East Lancashire folk, just the friendliest of people?

This jingle was a pinch off a top ten hit of the day:-

I'd like to teach the world to sing,
In perfect harmony,
I'd like to buy the world a ----,
And keep it company................................

That is an easy one, shouldn't last more than five minutes I would think.

Another easy jingle, this one had three extra lines added to it after a while, the extra lines are in and have to be filled in to complete the jingle:

The ---- ---- means happy motoring,
The ---- ---- means happy motoring,
The ---- ---- means happy motoring,
Call at the ---- ----.

For ---- -----, ) These are
And ------ ---- -----. ) the three
Call at the ---- ---- ) extra lines.

The Esso sign means happy motoring,
The Esso sign means happy motoring,
The Esso sign means happy motoring,
Call at the Esso sign,

For ---- -----,
And ------ ---- -----,
Call at the Esso sign.

Any advance on that????????????

This little rhyme was voiced over a scene of a schoolgirl eating the advertised product. What was it? (I think the voiceover was by the guy who used to be on That's Life, what was his name, always reciting his "odd odes?") Cyril somebody?

There was a young girl of Southend,
Who had only 'tuppence' to spend,
So what could be nicer,
Than a ---------'s ------,
Ice cream with a lolly each end.

A ------ -- ----- is just enough to give your kids a treat.

Re: Guess the commercial

Here's one. Guy driving along all dressed up in his posh car. As he passes a well positioned car, which is about to turn right and is waiting for the traffic to clear, he notices the young lady driving it, the 'in his head' voiceover comes on and says:

"Good driver that girl, attractive too; such old world charm."

OK so it was an advert to promote good driving habits around the late fifties. What had happened previous to the narration?

Re: Guess the commercial

Hello! I hope you don't mind me joining in after all this time but your question caught my eye.

Years ago, in order to compliment my mother (and yet tease her at the same time), after eating a meal which she had prepared, he would frequently exclaim, "Delicious!" and then add ".....and only a shilling a tin!"

This is a reference to an old commercial

.....for John West Norway Sild!

With best regards,

Nigel
