Guess the commercial
OK how about some old TV commercials. Write the thing out omitting giveaway words and the name of the product and see if anyone can guess/remember what was being advertised. I know this thread really excludes our younger posters and I apologise for that. You can always ask your parents if they know the answers if you want to join in.
Here's an easy one for a start. It would be from the late 50's. This one was sung: QCS, QCS, here's the meaning of QCS, For Quick and Cheerful Services, It's your ------ -------, QCS! The one who gets it starts the next one off. |

Re: Guess the commercial
HAHAHA. You should have your own TV show Tealeaf. No, sorry, not HBC. Two words only, each dash represents a letter.
|
Re: Guess the commercial
Here's a bit of a clue. You don't see these particualar ones on the roadside any more.
|
Re: Guess the commercial
Automobile association?
|
Re: Guess the commercial
No, but it certainly has to do with automobiles.
|
Re: Guess the commercial
Well, this is obviously a lot harder than I thought. OK let's make it a little easier.
The second word you are looking for is "Station". Come on you lot, you're not all under 50 out there. |
Re: Guess the commercial
Would it be a petrol station by any chance...
|
Re: Guess the commercial
Yes it would Lettie, now what's the name of it?
|
Re: Guess the commercial
Hey I am under 50 ! are they still operating or not?

|
Re: Guess the commercial

|
Re: Guess the commercial
No-one has it yet. No they are not still going and probably haven't been for 40 years but the 'commercial jingle' was very well known in the late 50's. I'll give you this one and set another from the same period.
QCS, QCS, here's the meaning of QCS, For Quick and Cheerful Services, It's your REGENT STATION, QCS! OK here's the new one. You lot have until tomorrow morning, if you don't get it by then I'll reveal all and try a more up to date one. Maybe I'm the oldest person around here and expecting too much! This one was partly sung and partly spoken. The singing was done by a female out of sight, whilst an attractive young lady in a sailor suit (short, shorts) held up the product and did the talking. As before, each dash represents a letter. Here we go: Sung: You'll be thrilled with ------ ----, You'll be thrilled with ------ ----, You'll be thrilled with ------ ----, Spoken: (by aforementioned attractive young lady in sailor suit wearing short shorts, phwaaaaar);) "Yes, you'll be thrilled with ------ ----, they're delicious, and only a shilling a tin." Sung: ------ ---- are super. Any ideas? |
Re: Guess the commercial
Nope!!.....
|
Re: Guess the commercial

|
Re: Guess the commercial
Nope! Look at the clues. Sailor suit. Product in a tin.
|
Re: Guess the commercial
Sardines...........
|
Re: Guess the commercial
Oh, the man gets ever so close! OK, think of a similar product to sardines and where they could come from. Look at the words and think of a rhyme for thrilled. You should get it now Doug.
|
Re: Guess the commercial
Rotten Tuna?
|
Re: Guess the commercial
Maybe we should cancel that TV show I thought you should have you silly old ******!
|
Re: Guess the commercial
John....are you sure this is a British TV Advert & not a US one?
|
Re: Guess the commercial
Yes, you'll be thrilled with Pilchards, they're delicious, and only a shilling a tin."
The only problem is you don't know where they've bin. |
Re: Guess the commercial
First word is 6 letters, next is 4......something fish?
|
Re: Guess the commercial
This isn't the limerick thread Doug!
OK the six is a country. The four is the type of fish in the tin. Think small herring. Bloody hell, if I say any more I might as well just spell it out! This is certainly a UK advert, I had never set foot in America when this was playing. |
Re: Guess the commercial
Ok, so I'm a bit Thick! at least I give it a go.
|
Re: Guess the commercial
Sils............................?
|
Re: Guess the commercial
I keep seeing a little Red tin, a round one with I Think "Canada sils" written on it.............No, oh Bu**er....
|
Re: Guess the commercial
I remember a black and white commercial with a little boy and a matchbox saying it "was Harry the Spiders coming out party" but don't for the life of me remember what it was advertising, anyone got any clues? this one's haunted me for years!!!!
|
Re: Guess the commercial
Very nearly Doug, you were on the right track. Here you go.
You'll be thrilled with NORWAY SILD, You'll be thrilled with NORWAY SILD, You'll be thrilled with NORWAY SILD. Yes, you'll be thrilled with NORWAY SILD, they're delicious and only a shilling a tin. NORWAY SILD are super. |
Re: Guess the commercial
This was a little jingle also. It was probably one of the first adverts on British TV. I remember the richer kids at school singing the jingle in the first weeks after the introduction of ITV. We only had BBC at our house. I would estimate this was 1955.
You're looking for two words. One is the product and the other is the manufacturer. This stuff is definitely still around! --------'-, --------'-, they make the finest -----, It is the brightest and the lightest that's --------'- -----, Your pastries are tasty, your cakes are rising too, And what's the ----- that never varies, that's --------'- too. |

Re: Guess the commercial
One that was a favourite of mine was from the early to mid 60s. It was a line drawn cartoon about a type of fuel and ended in a little ditty that went.

Re: Guess the commercial
Park Drive............................How the hell we missed that I don't know.
|
Re: Guess the commercial
Sorry JW, I had to nip out for some fags.
The G&T has lime in it because it's the only pic I could find. Personally I prefer it without either lime or lemon. But, interestingly, if you slice a lime into segments and then pop it in the freezer, it works as well as ice but without the consequent dilution. |
Re: Guess the commercial
Park Drive is not correct either Mr. Douglas!
I suppose a slice of frozen lemon would work as well then eh A-B? Here in the US they put far too much ice in all drinks, I like a couple of pieces but I don't want it piled out of the top of the glass. I do like lemon in my G & T which is one of my favourite tipples. |
Re: Guess the commercial
>>I suppose a slice of frozen lemon would work as well then<<
Yes I suppose that it would. It also helps if you keep the gin in the freezer too. They do that in Amsterdam. When you pour Dutch Gin straight from the freezer it has the consistency of syrup and you can fill the glass to the brim and beyond so that it forms a meniscus on the glass. For some reason this trick does not work quite as well with Gordon's. Pity that. |

Re: Guess the commercial
OK clue time. This was from the early sixties. I've put extra letters in to help.
M---'s is the best b---- --- best b---- ---, best b---- ---, M---'s is the best b---- ---, Let's have one now. Say M---'s b----, M---'s b----, Say M---'s b----, M---'s b----, M---'s is the best b---- ---, Let's have one now. |
