The Cog Wheel has a name!

2 Attachment(s)
Just returned from the last week of holidays yesterday and noticed that the Accy Cog now has a name plate attached to it. It's also starting to rust!

There's a couple of lines missing from the sign:

STOLEN FROM THE PEOPLE OF CHURCH
WRECKED BY HYNDBURN BOROUGH COUNCIL

Re: The Cog Wheel has a name!

The sign looks like it been printed on a bog standard HP printer and then laminated!

Looks like the frost got at it!!

Horizontal Cross Compound

Edgar Davies Surgicals Ltd., Indian & Primrose Mills in Church, Lancashire. Built by Ashton, Frost & Co., Blackburn in 1884. Photographed when running in the late 1970s. This engine was in wonderfull condition and a tribute to it's engineer. http://www.semidiesel.com/thumbs/indian.jpg

Say No More.

But worse is to come........

Howarth Art Gallery and Park, Accrington

Last mentioned in SB 9.4, p3, this site remains the last resting place of the 1884 Ashton, Frost & Co Ltd horizontal cross compound engine from Edgar Davies (Surgicals) Ltd, Church. Hyndburn Borough Council are now actively seeking a home for this engine.

Unfortunately, it has remained in open air storage and has suffered badly in terms of rust corrosion and the theft of nearly all its non-ferrous parts. More seriously, the following large parts appeared to be missing at a recent survey by Century Millwrights:-

HP piston rod and front cylinder cover LP piston rod and front cylinder cover
Air pump piston and rod
Six off flywheel spokes and flywheel rim
Slide bars/top guides
Gear drive shaft to governor
Valve gear linkages and trip mechanisms
Governor

Some of these smaller parts may have been "weighed in" but it is to be hoped that somehow the larger parts may have survived in another part of the site. If these parts have survived, then this engine may still be salvageable.

The Council are keen to see it saved and may, if prompted sufficiently, be prepared to cover the recipient's transport and craneage costs. Anyone interested in acquiring what was a very fine engine should contact:-

Miss Jean Williams,

Recreation Department, Hyndburn Borough Council Offices,
Eagle Street,
Accrington,
Lancashire.
BB5 1LN.

Tel. 01254 388111.

So there we go folks.....not satisfied with gross negligence, wanton vandalism and waste of money, the council are now discreetly trying to get rid of Church's once great steam engine.

Where did you see this advertised 'T', and what does "SB 9.4, p3," refer to?

Hi A-B,

The piccy's are on the following site:

http://www.semidiesel.com/stat_st.html

and the second posting is from this sight:

http://www.internalfire.com/index.php

I forgot to acknowledge both of the above sites for pccy's and details.

Re: The Cog Wheel has a name!

GRRRRRRRR Cog Wheel!!!!!!!! Whats a Cog??????? When serving my apprenticeship if any of us used the word "cog" the engineers would snarle and throw blackboard dusters!!

Re: The Cog Wheel has a name!

What did they call the toothed bits then? I've always known them as cogs (and wheels with them as cog wheels).

Re: The Cog Wheel has a name!

Gears, toothed pulleys, but to name a couple. Maybe its a time thing, but i've been an engineer for 10 years and never come accross a Cog yet.
I wonder who gave it this name??

Re: The Cog Wheel has a name!

So, are we writing to Miss Williams to ask her to explain HBC's decision??

Encarta doesn't seem all that keen on cog wheels either. Odd that because I've always called them that

They are actually metal but do look very cheap and tacky don't they? When I first saw them I thought the same as you. Incidentally the other two signs simply tell people not to climb on the railings! (Which of course means they'll be all the more tempted to do so.)Only the one has the name on it.

Re: The Cog Wheel has a name!

This is disgraceful. Should we not be complaining, loud and long, to HBC, to make them reverse their decision and restore the engine? They seem to do far too much of this sort of thing with the stuff that they steward on our behalf.
