Anyone recognise this?
1 Attachment(s)
And if you recognise it do you know who or what the initials stand for?
|
Anyone recognise this?
Oh, I know this one! Honest! But I am not going to say yet, to keep the thread going a little longer.
|
Re: Anyone recognise this?
Cummon Atarah...let us know... I can't just pop down town to have a look, you know. Could it be on Cannon Street? Willow Street?
|
Re: Anyone recognise this?
You're very close Darby.
|
Re: Anyone recognise this?
Well the only things I can think of are; the Mechanics Institute, The (or what was) childrens library annex of the main library, or one of the legal professions offices on Cannon Street. MLB or M&L B??
Could be outside the NatWest Bank or Midland Bank? But the L? Pity I can't nip down town and have a look. My sister-in-law would then call me "one of those funny people who go around looking up at buildings". I'll have another think! |
Re: Anyone recognise this?
Cold and warm at the same time here. Not Mechanics, library or lawyers. The initials refer to what it used to be but no longer is. Remember this is a old building.
|
Re: Anyone recognise this?
Manchester & Liverpool Bank......but won't say where.
|
Re: Anyone recognise this?
M&L Bank...then it's got to be on St. James Street?
|
Re: Anyone recognise this?
It is Manchester and Liverpool Bank but it isn't in St. James' St. It may help you to know that it is no longer a bank.
|
Re: Anyone recognise this?
When we were there this afternoon there were decorators in there who said that the building was to be used by..HBC.
Not satisfied with occupying almost every major building in Accrington they now want more. And all at our expense. How much longer are we going to put up with this???? |
Re: Anyone recognise this?
What do they need more space for?
|
Re: Anyone recognise this?
You tell me!!!!
|
Re: Anyone recognise this?
Maybe they are looking to put the Accy Clock in there??
|
Anyone recognise this?
The monogram is of course of the Manchester and Liverpool Bank, which is on Eagle Street/Cannon Street, the main entrance being on Eagle Street. This became the Rates Office after the bank had left.
|
Re: Anyone recognise this?
The monogram is actually on Eagle Street where the main entrance is. (Glass doors etched with the word "Bank") but as you so rightly say it is on the corner with Cannon Street so I suppose I should have given Darby half a coconut for that earlier - shared with Tealeaf for identifying the Bank name.

Re: Anyone recognise this?
Morning WillowTheWhisp, and I forgot to say this is just one of quite a few public buildings which use polished red Aberdeen granite as a feature of the entrance (also The Con Club, The Baptist Chapel, Gothic House, all in the same area of town of course)
|
Re: Anyone recognise this?
Talking of the Baptist Chapel - any mention yet of what is going to happen to that?
|
Re: Anyone recognise this?
¼ of a coconut..all to myself.
Is there no end to your generosity A-Bob? Well I'll just have to try harder, but from a thousand miles away it's difficult! |
Re: Anyone recognise this?
It wasn't A-b it was me! :)
|
Re: Anyone recognise this?
I would never be so mean as to hand out a quarter of a coconut. Besides, I am not sure I would trust my assistant, the lovely Rubella, with sharp implements. She is lethal enough with the Moped.
|
Re: Anyone recognise this?
It isn't easy dividing a coconut into equal parts.:4u:
