Is there a prize, do we get to keep the prints afterwards?

Come on Margaret, I like a bit of competition. It would be nice if one of Accyweb members won.

I have sent two pics in Frank......well, I think I have.
It wasn't the easiest of ways to submit the pics.
I really struggled.
Sent my pics on a Word Doc and when I checked what i had sent, the pictures did not appear though my details were on the form alright.....so repeated the process on a PDF.
I feel a right numpty.

I thought it was just me being thick.
I normally do not have a problem with such things...but I had to work really hard to send in the entries and even now i am not sure they got the pics...the entry forms Yes...but the pics...I'm not so sure.

I always have a problem with attaching files to docs/emails etc.I'd much prefer to take my pictures into library and hand them over.
I think they've probably got about 5entries from myself, hopefully one of them will be correct :D

gpick24 28-03-2015 17:54

Re: Open photography exhibition: Accrington libraryentries closes midnight tonight mi

I`ve sent a couple in, had to do them separately due to attachment limits on my email, it`s a couple of photos I was thinking of getting printed so will be good to see how they transfer to print before I go ahead.

gpick24 28-03-2015 18:30

Re: Open photography exhibition: Accrington libraryentries closes midnight tonight mi

I`ve had an email back saying that as they print all photos to 10X8 a fair chunk of mine will be cropped off (it`s a panoramic). :(
Resent it with a border top and bottom, so will see what happens.

Margaret Pilkington 28-03-2015 18:41

Re: Open photography exhibition: Accrington libraryentries closes midnight tonight mi

I haven't heard anything about mine.
Maybe they are still circling in the ether.
Good luck anyway to those who have entered.
It would be good if one of the Accyweb crew could win.....but I will look forward to going and seeing the pics that managed to get there.

gpick24 28-03-2015 19:27

Re: Open photography exhibition: Accrington library:entries closes midnight tonight

I think the only reason they emailed me back was because of how much of the photo would be cropped off to make it fit 10X8

Ditto,Adam emailed me saying the same about one of my panoramic photo's.
On a plus, that means one of five emails must of been correct with photos attached ;)

Re: Open photography exhibition: Accrington libraryentries closes midnight tonight mi

Well there are almost 200 entrants......my pics must have got through since I have had an email to invite me to a preview of the pictures.

So have I got an invite.

Margaret Pilkington 30-03-2015 15:05

Well Frank, you must have....you were on the list of e-mail recipients that I got......Davemac was too........so I can give up all hope of anyone looking at my pics.:D

I got my invite as well, I also looked at the recipients and there are a few people that sound like they do it for a living, so it will be interesting to see all the entrants.

Margaret Pilkington 30-03-2015 21:07

Re: Open photography exhibition: Accrington libraryentries closes midnight tonight mi

Yes, I thought that......maybe I will be embarrassed by my lowly efforts:)
That said, I liked both shots that I sent in.....and I reckon that is really what counts....that theirs mean something to the owner.

Accyexplorer 30-03-2015 21:17

Re: Open photography exhibition: Accrington libraryentries closes midnight tonight mi

I also noticed a few had the likes of photography etc included in their address.
Doesn't mean anything to me,I like both amateur and pro pics...

...still,I hope a member on here wins :D

Margaret Pilkington 30-03-2015 21:40

Re: Open photography exhibition: Accrington libraryentries closes midnight tonight mi

The thing about the professionals is that they have far more advanced equipment at their disposal than the amateur......sort of makes them streets ahead.....unless of course those running the comp put them into a different category...judging like with like.

Margaret Pilkington 30-03-2015 21:41

Good luck to all Accy Webbers who entered! I wish I lived closer so I could attend :)

Accyexplorer 30-03-2015 23:25

Re: Open photography exhibition: Accrington libraryentries closes midnight tonight mi

"10 highly recommended" folk will "receive a prize"....I'll donate mine to Accyweb (if I win anything).
Also "For a small donation you will also be able to collect your images and take them away with you" after the exhibition has ended.....for about 20p I can print my own thanks ;)

Margaret Pilkington 31-03-2015 06:15

Re: Open photography exhibition: Accrington libraryentries closes midnight tonight mi

I think there might be a difference in the printing......if they have been printed and mounted for to competition.....they might be worth giving a donation for.
I might have mine back.......it would be good to put them on my new picture wall.
I will see what they look like.

Accyexplorer 31-03-2015 07:50

Re: Open photography exhibition: Accrington libraryentries closes midnight tonight mi

Yes,there is a good chance they'll be on better quality paper if they're going on show (I could live with standard A4 quality for my personal viewing).
I'm sure your two will make a great addition to your gallery wall...

...My two entries are from the top of St James church in town looking over Accrington if you fancy one of those too :D

Margaret Pilkington 31-03-2015 10:21

Re: Open photography exhibition: Accrington libraryentries closes midnight tonight mi

It might be that you are only allowed to donate for your own pics.
The two that I have chosen would look good on my picture wall...one is a monochrome pic and the other is a shot taken on a day trip to Southport, but(to my mind) quite dramatic and full of impact(what the heck do I know?).
I would get them framed and they would be a proud addition.......none of the current pictures on my wall are pics that I have taken.
I have a John Miller print......a couple of pics bought at a street market in St Kilda(Australia) and an old fashioned picture taken in Ballarat......where we are all dressed as early settlers(all done in impeccable taste, with a gilt frame commensurate with the times).

mobertol 12-04-2015 18:19

Re: Open photography exhibition: Accrington libraryentries closes midnight tonight mi

I also submitted 2 photos to the competition - Adam bent the rules a little for me to enter. Obviously I won't be able to attend but look forward to hearing how it all goes. May cause a little confusion the fact that my Aunt who is also Diane Chaffer has entered 2 pics of her hols in Sicily last year - I have 2 "n"s in my name! I was really disappointed not to have taken one photo in time to submit it - the one I've put of the man tying his vines in Photo comp. 59 which I really like... Good luck to all who've entered - lets hope to have at least one of those Highly Commended prizes!

Margaret Pilkington 12-04-2015 18:31

Re: Open photography exhibition: Accrington libraryentries closes midnight tonight mi

I am hoping to go on Thursday......so I will let you know how things look Dianne.
with Davemac, max and Gpick in there as well I don't think I have much chance, but when the pics are taken down I hope to buy mine back and have them framed and put on my new photo wall in the refurbed house

Re: Open photography exhibition: Accrington libraryentries closes midnight tonight mi

I was in the Library today as they were numbering the pictures.
I have to say I could not resist a sneaky peek at some of the pics.
I now realise that mine do not stand an earthly chance.
I am pretty sure I spotted one of GPicks entries.
If you can spare an hour tonight, then you will not be disappointed with the exhibition.

I only have one entry, my second (loch lochy panoramic) would have had too much cropped off so i withdrew it, and as it was at the last minute I didn`t have time to enter another.
I will try and make it down tonight but I have a very early start tomorrow (I have to be in Kings Lynn for 9 o clock and I want to make a quick detour to RAF Coningsby to hopefully get a glimpse of the all new Battle Of Britain Typhoon) so might have to go another time.

Just got back.....there were some stunning pictures(and none of them won)...there were some shots that I would have given my eye teeth for.
Those that won did not really float my boat...but the judges must have had a really hard job choosing just ten.

Thank you to Davemac for the lift home.

I was only there very briefly, I think I recognised a few photos but my favourite was the eagle? with the fish.

Margaret Pilkington 16-04-2015 19:50

Re: Open photography exhibition: Accrington libraryentries closes midnight tonight mi

I liked the Eagle and also the Kingfisher......the skill in those shots was far greater than that needed to capture a light bulb...or a set of pavement furniture....but I suppose pictures are very subjective.

Accyexplorer 16-04-2015 21:48

Re: Open photography exhibition: Accrington libraryentries closes midnight tonight mi

Sadly,I couldn't make it.:(

I hope all them professional photographers didn't get too jealous by the entries from Accyweb members :D

Re: Open photography exhibition: Accrington libraryentries closes midnight tonight mi

I took himself into the Library today to show him some of the pictures...seeing as he could not be prised off the sofa last night.
I took a picture of Dianne's entry...will post it later on Today in Pictures.
Was going to take the pictures of the eagle and the Kingfisher but my battery gave out before I could capture them. These are the pictures I would have been giving my eye teeth to have taken.
I normally have a spare battery...but not today!

I took a shot of the eagle for you M (very impressive), the top 10 did next to nothing for me also an I so wanted to write a tirade in the comments book (but refrained).
Well done to all those members who tried (and feel cheated :D).

That for me was the best photo there, great subject and timing with the water still dropping from the fish. I don`t feel cheated but whoever took that photo probably should.

I agree, that for me was a real contender and beat the socks off all the top 10.
Here is another that (imo) should of been in the top 10:-

Re: Open photography exhibition: Accrington libraryentries closes midnight tonight mi

Thanks, it`s my favourite pic of the dogs and one i`m going to get printed, but technically it has it`s faults (nearest eye not in focus properly and a slight halo around the dogs), and if my untrained eye can see them then i`m sure someone judging a photography exhibit will too.

Margaret Pilkington 06-05-2015 12:31

And for me too. I would have been so proud to have taken that picture.

As for the imperfections you see in your picture, I think you are being too critical. The picture has a 'life' about it...an essence......it is real and alive.....and being life it has some minor imperfections(as you see it). I would see this as part of the character of the picture, part of its loveliness and attraction.

I found the pictures in the top ten were lifeless and without spirit and essence...they didn't grab me and make me think 'Wow! I wish I had taken that shot....whereas your pic and that of the eagle did make me think WOW! I really wish I had taken that picture.

Seeing photos done by other people can make you look more critically at your own shots....but we can always learn from what others have done...try in our own way to improve our own picture.....they never take anything away from what we have captured.

gpick24 06-05-2015 12:56

Re: Open photography exhibition: Accrington libraryentries closes midnight tonight mi

I do like to push myself to do better, and to do that you need to be critical of yourself. I`d fixed the halo but in the rush to send off my pic I sent them the unfixed one. There`s nothing I could do about the out of focus eye though, that`s just down to how the photo came about, just sat having a brew waiting for the sun to set a bit more, all set up for a sunset shot when I looked to my right and that`s what I saw, had to take it quickly so no time to change settings.
Can`t be all bad though as it has been my one and only sale on photo4me, and just knowing that someone somewhere was willing to pay for one of my photos was one of the best feelings ever.:w00t:

Margaret Pilkington 06-05-2015 14:10

Re: Open photography exhibition: Accrington libraryentries closes midnight tonight mi

I have never sold a picture I have taken...though I have had a couple used in guide books and one is currently being incorporated into a Victorian Heritage journal.

Re: Open photography exhibition: Accrington libraryentries closes midnight tonight mi

Get some on - Canvas Prints, Photo Art, Wall Art, Photographic Prints I was a bit reluctant at first, but it`s free and you never know, I never thought anyone would buy one of mine, who`d want a photo of my pets? But someone did (paid £38.82 for it) and I got £10 commision.

Turtle 06-05-2015 19:47

Re: Open photography exhibition: Accrington libraryentries closes midnight tonight mi

I'm not surprised by the reactions of fellow Accy Webbers towards this show. Having taken part in several juried shows I can report that it's basically a crap shoot. It depends upon the juror, and their personal taste. I have decided that such shows are not for me. I have even heard fellow artists state that they only enter shows where they know the taste of the juror to favour the style of their own work. Doesn't this say all.

Margaret Pilkington 06-05-2015 20:41

Re: Open photography exhibition: Accrington libraryentries closes midnight tonight mi

The good part of the exhibition is that it gives exposure for a wide range of pictures.
So as long as you go into it with no expectations other than that of letting a wide audience see you pictures you are OK.
I really did not expect to come anywhere, but I have to say that the ones that were placed would not have been my choice.....There were many many very good pictures....none of which were in the top ten.
I'm sure that this is not just my opinion either.
