Mmmmm Smell The Beans
Just opened a new jar of instant coffee, and as usual you unscrew the lid, then you have to remove the foil seal and oh yes, gosh, but as soon as you do that, the tantalising aroma of fresh coffee wafts it's way through your nostrils, gorgeous!
The next time you go to that jar and unscrew the lid though, you know there will not be that same strong smell. I just wonder, why not? The jar has only had a couple of spoonfuls removed so the bulk of the coffee is still there, yet to get just the slightest whiff from the jar your nose has to be almost buried in the granuals. Just two questions. 1/ Do you suppose before they seal the jars they pump essence of coffee into them just to make us feel we have opened a quality jar? 2/ Are there any other products out there that give off their own mouth watering scent that give us that 'feel good' factor? http://www.rareads.com/scans/16983.jpg |

Just another thought:eek: Yes I do smoke, but I can still smell when someone has recently used the bathroom, shouldn't smoking reduce that as well? |
Re: Mmmmm Smell The Beans
Try shaking the coffe jar before you next open it. It might work or I might be talking out of my a*** like usual.

Re: Mmmmm Smell The Beans
Maybe the coffee granules are still hot/ warm while they are being packaged thus producing the captured fume? Try warming up the coffee in the jar and see if that works. :idunno:
I used to love the smell of Old Holborn tobacco before it was smoked. :smoky: :) |
Re: Mmmmm Smell The Beans
I love the smell of baking bread. You can smell it wafting through the house a bit whilst it's cooking then when you open the oven door it's full on flavour.

You can buy coffee that is 'instant'?
That's my grinder in the bin then, and the only exercise I get out of the window. |

Oven doors, as you well know, are extremely tasty - they need a bit of seasoning though!:D |

Re: Mmmmm Smell The Beans
It's obviously the little coffee gremlins who are inside the jar holding down the lid. Once you've let them escape that's it you'll never smell them again.

If for example I use the same plate over and over eventually it builds up a crust the weight of which at some stage will cause the remains to no longer adhere and fall to the floor, all that's needed is a little patience. http://www.bbc.co.uk/threecounties/c...te_203x152.jpgBefore http://www.fishseddy.com/prodimg/HGS85015dd.JPGAfter Yes I know they are two different plates, that is to show how posh I am and that I can choose which one to eat off!:D |

I wish the little gremlins would clean up for me Gayle. All I seem to have is little gremlins that muck up!

Re: Mmmmm Smell The Beans
A serious answer to what I assume/hope was a serious question. The reason why coffee always loses its aroma once the bottle/vaccuum pack is opened is because the the thing that causes the smell in the first place is the oils in the coffee bean - and they are "volatile". That is, they disappear when exposed to air. Which is why you always get such a wonderful "hit" when you first open the pack.
I love fresh coffee, and my solution is to use coffee that I have freshly ground from beans and to make it in a cafetiere (not a filter) with water that is just below boiling. That way, though the beans still lose some of their smell and flavour once the pack is opened, more of the aroma is retained because it is still inside the bean. HTH Tricia |

Freshly baked home-made bread gets my vote - I just bought a breadmaker and it's brilliant. The smell permeates the house and the fresh bread tastes wonderful. One of the best buys yet! And second to that is freshly baked home-made cake. |

Of course, coffee will always deteriorate in time - so the best way to make really good coffee is to buy it in the bean and grind it yourself just before brewing. I like to buy various kinds of beans and experiment with different blends. |
