I remember them well, used to garage their wagon right next to St Marys School on Moscow Mill Street, near to Bill Dashes house, It used to stink to high heaven in the Summer

Flynn's Fishmongers was owned by my life-long friend's father, Bill Wilcock. His son Tom, who worked with him, died just a couple of months ago aged 76.

No, no, no...the way it went was "We come along on Saturday morning greeting everybody with a smile, we come along on Saturday morning knowing it's not worth while, as members of the Odeon Club we all intend to be good teddy boys when we grow up..." (instead of "citizens")...and some of us did! ;)

I was thinking more of some of the other chaps who went to the Odeon Club and who later went on to attain ted status (quite a few of whom were mates of Cashy's! :D). However, as it happens, I do have a pair of brothel creepers (blue suede ones, too!), somewhere in the garage. Thanks for reminding me, Jaysay...might get 'em out and give 'em an airing if the weather improves.

Richard is the only one of the Henry brothers still alive both Tom and John died a few years ago. John lived a few doors away from me for a while and often popped in for a chat, his son Jack(who I went to school with)still lives on the John Street Estate in Ossy

Yes cashy - I remember 1947 - just. We lived in Oswald St and everyone cleared their section of pavement, The mounds of snow were so high that we kids built snow caves in them - sledging down the street and straight acroos Washington St - what would Health & Safety think of that nowadays.

Donkey stones yes, available at LIDL not, so is there a modern day method of sprucing up the front step, i suppose the demise of a lot of mills has helped keep them a bit cleaner.

Can't think there is any in Ossy kate, Chapel St. Clayton I thought that was an unadopted road, its a one sided street If I remember rightly, facing some allotments or fields, not sure, have a friend who lives on there

I remember Chapel Street .... right in the old 'hood .... I really do believe that at least one street should be left with the old cobblestones ... it really does have some historical value .... maybe declare it a local heritage site, or something like that ... leave it as sort of an outdoor museum exhibit ... it's not like Chapel St. is a main drag (translation available if needed) ... maybe one of the local councilors could look into it.

My sister Patsy clough formerly Mckenna worked at moscow mill for ages and our entire family went to good old st marys. Patsy, Colin, Tommy, Joe and Sharon. We lived in one of the cottages in fielding lane close by pothouse lane. Remember picnics at (cocolumb) brook.Haven't a clue how to spell that! When we were kids in Ossy we thought the winters were ace, some mornings the snow drifts would cover the cottage windows. We would have icicles on the inside of the windows. Don't think i could cope with that now.

Was a fabulous place to be kids, open countryside and freedom to wander. Shame it is all built up these days.

Not a terrible lot of building in that neck of the woods, Cocker Lumb was very much the same the last time I ventured in that area, still plenty of open spaces all around Ossy

Have been taking a quick look around, and Jaysay is correct ... there are not too many cobbled streets left ... just seem to be the ones that come to a dead end (no through traffic) e.g. Corn Mill Yard off Whalley Road. Of course, nearly all the back streets are still cobbled.

Thanks kate, can always remember it being cobbled, because my Dad had a garage at the bottom of the Straits next to the Nash Club, and the bone shaking ride I endured getting the car out for work

You missed out big time bud ... imagine a pub crawl over six time zones:eek::eek::eek: from the Atlantic to the Pacific to the Arctic ... and all points in between:theband: .... this thread is about "remembering"; so, I remember, vaguely, riding a horse into the bar at the Paris Hotel in Mankota Sask., (pop. 387) I got tossed out on my ass, but the horse stayed in the bar and drank a few gallons of beer. Only in Canada, eh; love this country:mosher:

Taking about a horse drinking in a pub, I worked with a guy at Shopfitters called Doug (can't remember his last name) challenged a Thwaites dray horse to a drinking bout, think it was in the (or outside) the Britannia on Nuttall Street in the early 70s, problem is can't remember who won:rolleyes::D

Well just read through all of this thread and Mr Vandome stood out, always a well dressed Headmaster. Fred Atkinson used to be the Engineer at the Mill just up coal pit lane, his daughter was Jean ??. Anyone remember St Mary's Youth Club Dance on Havelock Street on a Saturday Night or it may have been Fridays. When a gang came over from Blackburn all with hob nail boots on with words like " Death" etc painted on the toe caps. If I remember correctly every one legged it quick like.
Fishy Flynn used to park his fish truck in the big shed in Mrs Gillions back garden the truck was a Blue Thames if I remember correctly, and Mrs Gillion was a great strawberry grower!!

St Mart's Youth Club Dance on Havelock St. where on Havelock Street, there was never any sort of dance hall on Havelock Street. St Mary's Youth Club was held on a Thursday night In St. Mary's School on Moscow Mill Street, until transferring to the Perish Centre on Lock Street in the sixties. The only time I remember trouble with gangs was in the days of the Empire Dance Hall at the bottom end of Union Road

Still can't remember any fights though Rycroft, I went to the youth club from being twelve till they packed it in around Christmas 1964, those who attended just weren't into that fisticuffs

I remember Mr Birtles and son Malcolm at Ellison Fold Garage behind The Forts Arms. I lived in Grange Street at the time and Daniel Street and Moor Street and lots of other side streets were cobbled in those days.

The other name for the cobble stones is "sets" and they are using some now to place around the renovated Peel memorial on the top of the Coppice in Accy. It was nice to see so many people at the commemorative ceremony on 26th September. Maybe the pathwork renovation there will encourage more people (other than us regular dog-walkers) to enjoy the varied countryside of the Coppice.

Slight change of direction. Does anyone remember G & M builders (I think that was the name) back in the 70's when all the grant work was being done.
