My theory on the start of the decline, was the introduction of sodding "Bingo" it took hold n clubs started to become No-Go areas fer the younger generation.:) so when many of the older uns croaked, the memberships kept reducing.

Bingo started in clubs when was a teenager cashy, one of the first clubs to introduce it was Ossy Con, in the days before the bar was down stairs, was only talking to our Warden on Mallard on Friday about her mother and father playing bingo at Ossy Con on Saturday nights in the 60s

I don't think you can blame Bingo for the demise of WMC's but I would agree that the people that played did absolutely nothing to encourage younger people to be a part of their own little "world"

As you say eventually they all croaked and there was no one to carry on the great WMC's tradition.:)

That and they had more than their fair share of dodgy committee members.

Perhaps this should be a separate thread though.

Re: 1st pint, 1st local.

I once participated in the 'rescue' of a WMC.
It was 'going under' due to the devious syphoning off of funds by an earlier committee.
The financial transactions were not properly monitored, so that theft was possible without risk of detection.

When we were told of examples such as -
..a committee member making a 200 mile round trip during his holiday, for the sole purpose of doing his 'job' of emptying the one armed bandits .... you become aware that fiddling by committee members was accepted and the others 'turned a blind eye' and had their own perks.

The new committee I was part of for about a year, were aware of the past fiddling and were determined to put the club back on its feet. I worked two evenings a week selling raffle tickets for the small reward of two free pints of beer.

As the club regained its viability, some of us left the committee and gradually the culture of the committee's financial perks crept back

PS I have posted this in the new thread also

Back to Pubs! What was the worst thing that happened to pubs, yours or all pubs! My 2 points being, knocking all the rooms into one big area, couldn't find a quiet room anymore. Kids of any age being allowed!!!! I blame the drunken mobs you see around towns now on this! watched drunks in pubs behaving stupid and nothing being done and thinking this is the way to behave!!! What ever happened to sitting outside with crisps and pop????
