1st pint, 1st local.

My first pint was in the Commercial at the junction in Church, has it just been pulled down??? Christmas 1968 and I was 15. Taken in by the blokes I worked with from Pilkington Bros. and had 2 pints of mild. Off my head! 1st. local on a regular basis, funds permitting, starting in 1969, the Tanpits again down in Church. They would let anyone in! :D

Re: 1st pint, 1st local.

Used to go into town with my friend on a Saturday morning to do any shopping and hang around the lads who were on the market stalls (particularly the shoe stall I seem to remember). Then used to meet her dad in the Regency for a half at lunchtime - reckon we were only about 14 when we started doing that.

First regular local was the Heys in Ossy.

At the tender age of 15, I had just started work in the offices of Mullard Simonstone.
I was working with older girls and they lured me into a night out which included a Babycham in -
The Old House At Home Melbourne St - now demolished for the dual carriageway.

1960 ... the Village Blacksmith on Bayley St. .... Dutton's house .... had a pint of mild, tho' I soon changed to bitter and shifted my alleigence to Thwaites ... I was a late starter; almost 15 at the time.

I think my first real local was the Junction, John Smith's, a real good pint .... but whenever the urge to have a pint came over me, I would usually pop into a Thwaites' house .... Forts Arms, Australian, Black Dog ...............

i had my first drink on my 18th birthday, late starter, as i was not allowed to stay out late, very strict parents, and then into H.M. forces, against rules and regulations to drink under age.

First Pint would have been Bridge in Accy, used to slip in back door, blocked up now!, swiftly followed by the Commercial (Now Regency Bar) had fun with the revolving door after a few, think the Landord was an Irish Bloke called Ken, that would be 1972 i was 15. First proper local was Great Eastern when they used to have a model train set running round the top of the Bar!! Hey happy days!! Used to wander around a bit in them days though in Pubs like, Duke of Wellington, Queens and Old House at Home and enjoyed or was it endured the company of the likes of Mick Sargison, Dave Salmon and George Norris!!!!

I was sixteen when I first discovered alcohol. Having to avoid Church and Dale Street Club where my dad used to hang out, I travelled a bit! The Bridge was one, especially on Friday night, Rising Bridge was another and then when I turned seventeen it was time for the Mecca. In fact, my mate and I landed barmaid jobs at Burnley Mecca which was loads of fun. I was underage but lied! I remember getting well piddled at Bullough's Club one night and my Nana put me to bed with a bucket and saved me from a hiding.

I met my future husband that year and we used to go to Jean Daniel's pub off Plantation Street. Memories!

There is no little snug anymore, the pub has been opened up. Ian and I had our wedding reception there before it was altered.

My first boozers were the Imperial and the Big Crown. Jeez there were some characters in the Crown.

Aye yer not wrong there Jaysay, at least with the first 3 you could tell with one look what mood they were in, but Gary could flip so quick it was frightening!!! One minute nice as pie...next minute a complete animal!!

Going back many years my uncle was a pal of Dave Salmon, and when Dave got married my uncle who was a keen amateur photographer offered to take his wedding photo's as a wedding present. Well, all seemed to go well, and they had piccy's taken in a few locations including either Haworth or oakhill park, only for my uncle to find none of the photos had developed properly and were completely ruined!! Well as you can imagine, my uncle was crapping it at this point, but obviously had no option but to tell Dave what had happened. He took a pal with him, expecting the worse, but fortunately must have got Dave on a good day, and he actually laughed about it, and got everyone together again to have em redone...luckily all well second time around, but think my uncle's pants needed chucking away!!! :D

Jim and Maureen Parks, that's brought back some memories Jen, the last time I saw Maureen was when my mother was in hospital just before she died she was a nurse on the ward, had a natter with here, that was 7 years after I moved back to Ossy from the Valley 1993

Re: 1st pint, 1st local.

1st pint - when I was 16, I had to do a geographical survey of Sabden for my A level, along with another classmate who was a bit more worldly wise than me. He insisted that we go in the Pendle Witch for a pint and I'll never forget the scene that greeted us - the roaring fire, the gleaming brass beer pumps, the friendly smiling landlord waiting to serve us, the warm glow of the bar on a late winter afternoon and when I lifted that glass of foaming nectar to my lips...that was it, I loved it and I knew then that I would be spending a lot of my future life in places like this.

First local...three actually -
1) Evenings out with the lads - the Derby - home to a whole host of weird and wonderful characters in the late 60's, as Cashy will testify!
2) Lunchtime - the Globe - most ably run by Doreen Dunn who was always happy to serve a young gentleman in an Accrington Grammar School uniform!
3) With the old fella - the Stop & Rest, where I had the privilege of standing in the "Deep End" with another bunch of equally fascinating characters, all of whom Jaysay knows!

Quite right there Wynonie, there's a lot of casualties in the Stop deep end, all the Mine Hosts that I knew from my days as a customer have now departed, Ron and Isobel, Jim and Barbara, and more recently Andy who went on to become steward at Ossy Con, who sadly passed on a couple of years ago, his wife Irene still work behind the bar in the club occasionally

First pint was in the Accrington Stanley Sports Bar. First night out around Accy was under the wing of the Stanleyites. A night that featured then goalie Jon Kennedy dancing like a cabbage to 'Baby Give It Up'. Good night, that.

St Johns was Thwaites Taggy, New Brewery John Smiths, Royal Oak - Thwaites, n Reamer think ya probably mean the ST.Ledger which was on Plantation St, n old haunt of "Tommy 2 Guns" in early mid 60s many probably don't know of him,but Bob Dobson certainly does.;)that was also a Thwaites pub, just around corner on Elephant St was the Welcome Inn, n top left the Colliers both Mathew Brown/Lions houses, was a top little circuit once of a day.:)

Have all those pubs closed now? The ones like Great Eastern, St Johns, New Brewery, Royal Oak, etc? I know the Boar's Head is still open, even though I haven't been in there for donkey's years.

The Plane Tree, a few of doors up from the Bay Horse, it closed just after I started drinking must have been 62/63, nearly sure its part of Franco's now. other Ossy pubs that closed were the Prince of Wales and the Horseshoe which where pulled down to make way for the council flats on St Pauls Court, Worsley Court and Meadow Court

Small world indeed, Mick .... Haven't been in the Rose and Crown since they moved out of the Cat Centre ... used to drink in the Rose and Crown when Eddie first opened it on Division Street, which would be almost 20 years ago, and then in the Rose and Crown Downtown on Brock Street when Mike Sullivan (late of Brighton) owned it .... I trust Eddie and Sheena are well.

I think my first pint was in the AEU club on the corner of Paxton St. and Blackburn Road, 10p if I remember correctly. I remember Johnnie Walker taking me in the King's on my seventeenth birthday and telling Frank Daniels it was my eighteenth, free beer all night. First local was the Peel Park.
