Thing is, most people learnt Discipline @ Respect at school back then, doubt if they do these days?

When our son left Moorhead in 1985 at the age of 16, he went straight into the J.L.R. (Junior Leaders Regiment). In 1986, his mother and I went down to Bovington Camp for his passing out parade.

When socialising with other parents during the meal that was laid on after the parade, one of the other recruits younger siblings said to our lad, "how did you put up with the discipline"?

Back came the reply, "Because I had it at home and at school before I joined up". He passed out as a Junior Sargeant by the way. (Mum and Dad well chuffed)
Your's as ever, stay happy, Taddy.

doubt it myself. its something that,s been lost in time like mental arithmatic and anything that happened before they were born plus anything geographic if they hadn,t visited the place.

More than likely ignored as opposed to lost, added to that the disparate cultural backgrounds & "cultures" means there's no commonalities.

First day at Hollins well it was the first week actually, seemed to be based around fighting to establish who was the cock of the school - don't know whether this was because Hollins was basically a crap school full of low lives or was a ritual acted out at all schools in the early 70's?

Not just the seventies, lots of schools seem to have these morons, most folk with sense declined these competitions, one of whom in my year was what must have been the tallest, widest 11 year old I have ever seen, he was quietly spoken and went about his own business until one time in his third year the so called 'cock' picked on him, twice he told him to go away and leave him alone, the third time after one hard blow he left the 'cock' lying on the floor and went about the business he was pursuing before the bully interrupted, his only comment? "Well, I did warn him".

So your saying that Maggie wasted her time? Fifty years on had she left it alone the P.C. brigade would have removed it for being prejudiced?

It is probably less open now - then; it was literally right outside the school front door and no teacher did nowt about it - several scraps at the same time. Almost like a school sports day event as far as I recall and I didn't take part.

Your "cock of the school" must have been a light weight - the characters at Hollins were professional trouble makers - it wasn't just a school pose they were delinquents - 24-7.

The lad that was flattened, was a waste of time, anything that could be disrupted he was there anything that could be broken he was there, the exception being when it's his nose, then he went whining to the teachers, the first one he met issued first aid with a firmly placed handkerchief as the lad jumped about because of the agony the teacher said, hurts doesn't it now maybe you'll stop doing this to others?
Idiot boy was back to his cruel routine as soon as he healed.

Most bullies are usually being bullied within their own families anyway (so research by the experts claims) and or come from really rough families. I know 2 of the so called "cock of schools" at Hollins ended up setting fire to their brothers café for insurance and he died in the fire - apparently (if anyone knows more about this let me know, thanks). Other hard nuts/bullies I know of in Accrington ended up committing suicide or dying of alcoholism but that doesn't happen to them all.

Dr Who actor Christopher Eccleston apologized for bullying someone at school...

It is a problem, but at which point do you blame the bully that was being bullied for his own bullying?
