been told I need a new computer
My Kids, (now middle aged), are telling me that I should spend some of their inheritence (Ha Ha, little do they know); on a new electrical driven computer instead of my old Windows XP steam driven one before the hard drive gives up the ghost and I lose whatever is on it.
My problem is that it has taken me hundreds of years to master the one I have got, what are the perils, (not to mention costs); of a complete new system, IE, computer, screen, keyboard, mouse, etc, etc, etc. Any price above a few pints of real ale is not acceptable,(only half joking) |
Re: been told I need a new computer
Taddy, it depends what you want to do on your computer.
I bought a new set up three years ago...ok, it was a factory reconditioned rig.....and I did not need a monitor. I think I paid less than £300 for a computer that has a huge 2 TB storage space. The same computer to buy today is £125 from a firm in Burnley....the drawback is it rins on Windows 7.... though you can get similar with Windows 10 for a little bit more. If you are getting used to something new, then I guess that opting for Windows 10 is the better option. If I were looking to,rplace my system I would save up and get an apple mac desk top.(don't know what this would cost reconditioned) It is different from Windows, but as I say...if you are having to learn something new anyway. Get your middle aged children to help you choose....and get them to show you the ropes. |
Re: been told I need a new computer
Just had a very quick look at the cost of an Apple Mac all in one machine.
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Apple-iMa...AAAOSwHF5ckUxc It is more than a few pints of real beer....so guess that rules it out :D |

Re: been told I need a new computer
You can export favourites/bookmarks from IE and Firefox as files which can then be imported on the new computer.
|
Re: been told I need a new computer
You can get a special cable to link the old and the new computers and this will transfer whatever you want to keep.
Some programs may NOT be compatible with a new operating system(that's my beef with changing over the W10...well and the fact that it feels clunky) Do you back up your computer to an external drive.....it may be possible to transfer you info from whatever you back you info up on. As I said before....get your children to show you the way. |

Re: been told I need a new computer
My wife got that call too, we laughed and waited.
and waited. Still waiting - still working :) RE your favorites etc. It may be best to back them up now, save them and put it in a safe online location. Perhaps get yourself a gmail account (comes with plenty of online storage too) and save them in the cloud. Same with your pictures, just have eveything marked as private and not public. Although a more secure way of dealing with it would be to get another hard drive, add that to your existing machine and copy everything to that, then you can remove it and add that into a new machine when you eventually get one. Or buy your new machine and copy the files over to it (you can take your existing hard drive and put it in the new machine to then copy the files over). RE learning windows 10: There are add-ons that will make the desktop look and behave like windows 7, other than that - its still windows just it's gonna be a damn site faster. Just beware of buying a 2nd hand system thats got win10 on yet is not really capable of running it well. |
Re: been told I need a new computer
Rainbow six, Taddy is a Luddite....he has few computer skills....so putting his old hard drive to a new machine to transfer his files would be beyond his capability.
As for Windows 10...making it look like Windows 7 does not make it act like Windows 7. Also, it maybe that many of the programs that Taddy has been using are no longer compatible with Windows 10...for some people(me included,) this presents a problem....if I can no longer open saved projects then a lot of my work is useless....and has to be done over in new programs....incurring another expense. I hate Windows 10....I have really considered getting the xtra pc USB....this has Linux loaded on it and can be plugged in and this might be a better option for Taddy(cheaper and removable if it does not suit....and can be used on an old computer as long as it has USB port) I have posted a link to this product....I have no commercial link with this company by the way. |

Re: been told I need a new computer
Did you ever get around to replacing the PC that is running XP?
If you're using a pc that is running XP since back in the day then its morethanlikely you should just buy a new pc! After 5 mins of using a newer pc you will be like... wow this is so much faster. XP is a serious security risk. Do not use it online. 7 by now is prob under the same catagory as it is also longer officialy supported by microsoft. Quote:
you can just make your own bootable USB stick of linux! Even this might not be good enough for the PC taddy was talking about because the hardware is going to be so old that its possible even the version of linux xtra provide might be too heavy. Might be better going for lubuntu -- but then again. The learning curve might be too steep for someone that is thinking "do i really need a new pc" when they are using a pc so old that it still has XP installed. I dunno. |
Re: been told I need a new computer
There speaks a man who knows his stuff.
Restless, Taddy is just in Baby school where computers are concerned.....and I say this respectfully because it is where we all started. He even calls himself The Luddite. |

I shall just put another shovel full of coal into the boiler that supplies the steam that operates my XP machine, at least for the time being. I think that it is now time that I was back on my allotment, (no electronics needed). Thank you all for trying to help, Your's the Lancashire Luddite. |

Re: been told I need a new computer
what I want to know Taddy is...where are you getting the coal?
Can't be from the railway embankment as the trains stopped running to Huncoat when God was in short trousers....around the same time the NCB shop at the bottom of burnley Rd closed. I did tell him that he was talking a language that was foreign to you! |
Re: been told I need a new computer
Hazel seems to recall the N.C.B. shop being on the left hand side of Little Blackburn Road, lower down than Wardleworths bookshop but will stand to be corrected; Maybe Atarah can help on this one.
As to your question "where are you getting your coal"? Wilkinson's of Great Harwood have been supplying our needs since we had a solid fuel stove fitted seven or eight years ago, burning only (smokeless) coal I must add, in case my Friendly neighbourhood busybody is reading this. You are right about "Restless's" post being a foreign language to me but then again it does not matter, my steam powered XP device serves me well enough at the moment. Your's, Glad to be a Luddite. |
Re: been told I need a new computer
I used to walk down Burnley Road every school day on my way home.....and there was a coal shop at the bottom of Burnley Rd......it had baskets of different grades and types of coal in the window......now I thought it was the NCB shop, but I could be wrong...after all this would be in the region of 60+ years....I went to Peel Park until I was 11.....so Hazel could be right...but I know the shop advertised the NCB....it had the logo in the window.
Anyway as long as you get the fuel to keep your steam generated machine going...all is good. |
Re: been told I need a new computer
In the late forties’ early fifties, we (on Belfield road) got our coal from a guy called Matison, or Mathison. He had his business across from Mosley’s bakery on Jacob Street.
Then we got electric fires fitted, so no reason for coal. I also seem to recall early sixties, that somebody took a photo of Accrington from the top of the coppice in the forties with all the smoke in the atmosphere, and then mid-sixties and my what a difference there was. Cheers |
Re: been told I need a new computer
i was thinking lubuntu but then perhaps might even have to go to Puppy linux or DSL :D

Re: been told I need a new computer
My son and grandson turned up yesterday whilst I was firing up the boiler for my steam operated, belt driven computer.It is about time that you got shut of this and updated it; I can get you a brand new all singing all dancing set up for less than £500 my lad said;
I almost (ALMOST) agreed, until I found out that was purely for the hardware. When I questioned about "Windows Office Word",Google Earth, Etc, Oh that is a whole new ball game he said, they will cost over and above the £500. at this my Luddite skills kicked in (ABSOLUTELY NO CHANCE), I gasped. By Eck I came very close to abandoning my ultra Luddite principles. |
Re: been told I need a new computer
Seems a bit expensive Taddy, Google Earth is free nowadays and depending on what version of office you have you might be able to take your licence to a new computer, if not there are free alternatives to office anyway.

Thanks for that gpick, when I got this computer, (at the turn of the 21st Century), or it seems that long ago; The lad who installed it for me used an external hard drive to remove the software on my old woodburning computer and then transfered it to my new coal fired one. I presume that is what you refer to when you say that I may be able to take the licence to the new computer. However when I mentioned this to my 52 year old ex army youngster all I got was some (good natured) abuse about my being known as the "Lancashire Luddite), followed by the title, Tight person,or words to that effect. However I have decided that the more I spend on a new computer, the less I will have to carry on pursuing my other (chief) passion of Hobgoblin tasting. All said in the best possible taste, Yours, the self confessed, Lancashire Luddite. |
Re: been told I need a new computer
I am typing this on my new all singing, all dancing nuclear powered machine, as was said in the first of the Christopher Reeves Superman movies, it is " faster than a speeding bullet". For those of you who know about such things it is a Lenovo computer with Windows 10 and Dolby audio system, a Lenovo wireless keyboard and an Acer twenty two inch monitor. What a difference to my old coal fired machine, I could well get more than a little interested in this new fangled technology with this fancy piece of electronic ware.
Thanks to all Accy Webbers for dragging me out of the Victorian Age and into the new electronic age. |
Re: been told I need a new computer
But it still doesn't beat a couple or three Hobgoblins
|
Re: been told I need a new computer
Well Done that man!
I am so pleased that you are finding it interesting and there may be glitches along the way, but you are going in the right direction...forward). Do not lose that curiosity...it will take you to places that you have never been...and there is nothing wrong with taking a few hobgoblins along with you for company. |

Re: been told I need a new computer
Thanks Marge, As long as my "75 year old brain/mind) allows me to do so then I will, this new fangled electronic wizardry is already teaching me how to spell and punctuate without having to look up words in my paper bound "Oxford English Dictionary", Yes that is as old as my steam driven computer was. Maybe in a few months I will be able too enter into the secondary modern or even the Grammar school class. Even some of the words in this post were corrected by this all knowing machine. Yours, the ever ready to learning Lancashire Luddite.
