In the interest of balanced discussion

For those of you who bow down before all things Microsoft there is a Beta release of Internet Explorer 7 available.

NOTE!!! THIS IS BETA SOFTWARE, DO NOT USE IF YOU EXPECT IT TO BE 100% STABLE(But hey, it can't be much worse than ie6 :) )

Have fun but don't come crying to me if it breaks something!

Had a quick play,

Likes: Tabbed browsing, integrated search, Quicktabs browser, RSS feeds

Dislikes : Cleartype fonts without asking me (Can't turn them off!), redesigned menus (non standard, items not where they have always been, a bit hot potch if you ask me, back forward arrows one placem Home button miles away), rendering seems suspect(pages look different to other browsers, suspect non complience to w3C)

We will no doubt find out how secure it is when its on general release

Oh, BTW you can't run multiple versions. this will replace whatever IE you currently have. So DO NOT install this if you have a dependancy on IE for any specific sites.

Could you run multiples versions of any IE? I thought it was always a replacement install

You can run different version of 'decent' broswers though!

I thought I had better point it out so that people liek MadHatter who go on about having banking sites etc that don't work on anything other than IE don't end up having nothing that works.

Re: In the interest of balanced discussion

I'm not impressed with it entwisi, it's a reactive product to opera and firefox because they are getting slated for having an insecure product, it's not a proactive product.
By the sounds of what you've said they've got a long way to go before they catch either opera or firefox up.
It's obvious that the bank sites aren't compliant entwisi, they should be but aren't, if they were they'd work.
BUT i still keep getting faults with firefox, and the fact that there's so many updates proves to me that its far from perfect. having said that I don't think the others actually tell you when updates are available do they, only when there's a new release.
As for compliance on ie, from what i've seen thatey have no intension of making it compliant, because it doesn't suit them to do so. yet aren't they the major player in this w3c thing .

Re: In the interest of balanced discussion

HAve you tried spoofing the user agent? I've found quite a few sites that will work happily on FF when you tell it to pretend to be IE.

As for updates, ALL good software is constantly being updated. Something like FF has probably nearly 1 million lines of code written by humans. There will be mistakes in there. The fact that Open Source software releases updates when they are available rather than bagging them up to be released as a patch is what makes itmore secure. Be thankful of them.
