Piggy backing
2 people are cautioned by police for using someone elses wireless internet connection aka piggy backing.
http://uk.news.yahoo.com/rtrs/200704...s-fa6b408.html Least something is done about it if caught, but has quite worrying consequences but how can u be sure that your internet wireless network is safe ??? Even with WEP/WPA, once routewr default has been set up it can be hard to change it like router name & dont really understand the WPA configuration whereas WEP is easier but how safe is it? |

Has it never occurred to you why your next door but one neighbours say they have BT as thier ISP ? :D |
Re: Piggy backing
WEP is totally insecure, it can be broken in less than an hour.
WPA is a lot better, basic security is change your Essid(Network name) to something hard to guess using different characters, e.g. I might want to use Entwisi so I would do 3n!wi51 Then I would disable teh broadcast of this. I would enable WPA witha suitable key And I woudl lock my router to known MAC addresses only. Beyond this if they really want info off your network they will kick your door in and take the PC. Remember that even with no encyrption etc on all HTTPS websites are still secure as the SSL layer is still out the realm of hackers ability. |
Re: Piggy backing
Ok techies hehehehehehhe
But to the average home user its not quite so simple is it:rolleyes: i've tried to change my SSID & it wont let me change the default name.....& what is the WAP security Question bit is that make your own up or what:confused: ................seee not as simple but if im having difficulties with it gawd help anyone else, altho u cant just hack a WEP tho unless u is a crooked geezer [ess], i cant just go onto tinks' network without WEP info. |
Re: Piggy backing
RTFM chuck!
as for wep, the tools are readily available to crack WEP, a half decent laptop will do it. |

Re: Piggy backing
I have BT home Hub.
To see if anyone else is connected I use Hub Manager, it will say who is connected, anything dodgy on there and it would be time to ring BT. I have looked into setting up security on it but havent been bothered as yet. as anyone who connected would have to be pretty close anyways. |
Re: Piggy backing
    Erm Entwisi..............help, that open dns thingy interferes with my bt hub manager by loading the open dns saying that its not loading:confused:

Re: Piggy backing
So what the worst thing that could happen??
I mean I use BT Home Hub and used it as it was strainght out of the box. as far as Im aware I have no added security. |
Re: Piggy backing
worst, someone connects to your hub, downloads child porn, hacks a bank or three, has a crack at CIA, according to your ISPs logs it was you all along, your either extradited to guantanamo bay or getting beaten to a pulp at her majesty's pleasure in teh UK.
That sounds pretty worst that could happen IMHO |
Re: Piggy backing
Entwisi
In plain english i simply cannot change my security from WEP to WPA [yes i have read the flippin manual & as i said its as much help as a pen with no ink!!!] Simply hub is only recognising its own SSID & WEP key, tried doing WPA & lost connection completely saying cant connect, when launching hub manager it cant connect to hub but despite my change to WPA its simply bypassing it back to the wep default - plus side now windows can find my network which didnt before - weird. So what do i do:confused: |

No disrespect to the average home user but when you start messing with networks you need to know a bit more than just "click here to connect to the internet" |
Re: Piggy backing
Just in case u thought i wasn't serious about my wireless prob - err i am, so any help appreciated as im back to wired connection as the hub is very close to getting a kicking:mad:
