Broadband extention

Hope i'm in the right section and that i can explain myself ok.

Have got Virgin TV + broadband, TV in one room PC in another room so therefore i have an extention from one room leading into the other room leading into the back of my box. I am having a new fire place put in and there is not enough room for the cable to go round the fire place, Virgin has quoted £75 to re-wire. What i want to know does anyone know how to extend the extention without having to call out Virgin? If so is it an easy job?

Thanks

Depends on what sort of wire it is. If its standard ethernet then just buy a longer cable. I'm not familiar with Virgin so can't tell you for sure.

Thanks, but i've no idea. Will most likely have to ring Virgin.

Like Ian says which cable is it? Is it from the PC to the modem?
In fact where is the modem, next to the TV or next to the PC? If the modem is next to the PC then it is the coax cable that needs to be longer. How much longer does it need to be? Can you not put the new fire place over the cable? ( without damaging it of course )

Come to think of it you might not have a modem if you have had cable for a while. The older boxes had the modem built in and had a ethernet cable from the TV box to the PC ( a crossover cable if I remember correctly )

Re: Broadband extention

Sure the modem's in the box, because at the moment the PC is connected up to the box, because i've taken the PC out of the extention as we are having a lot of building work done in the house. The room the PC is usually in is a shambles. Getting new fires done in both rooms and there won't be enough cable to go round the fire surrounds. Looks like i shall have to contact Virgin and pay up.

Nope, exactly teh opposite. It sounds like its standard CAT 5 cable which is relatively cheap.

Not sure if you can join the cables (If it is an ethernet cable) but if there are adapters about to do it I have a 10M cable you can have, brand new never been used

Re: Broadband extention

you can get cat5 couplers so you can just extend the cable you have. The other way would be a wireless router behind the TV and a USB wireless adapter in the PC, the you can put the PC anywhere in the house. I prefer the wired approach for reliability and security.

It is, not sure if straight or crossed but that won't matter if it is extended with a straight lead.

most decent network cards will autoswitch if you use a standard cable instead of a X over

Sara if you are still really struggling with this send me a pm with your number as I know someone who may be able to sort the extension out for you for a lot less than what you would be charged by virgin!!!
