Bogus Emails

Just wondering if anybody has received an Email this morning or last night saying it was from Me, my other half rang me to ask why I'd sent her an Email with a link. This was news to me, but this morning when I was checking my inbox there was a few Email refusal notices for an Email sent to Burnley Web which for course no longer exists, I've just checked my sent box and apparently I've sent this to five people, looks like I've been hacked, So if anybody receives an Email from me don't open it delete it right away

Now you know I am hopeless with computer technology , Jaysay , but in the past I have received emails on three separate occasions from "someone I know". They have been multiple-type emails or whatever they call them , and each time after I had problems with my computer . What happens ? If you open them are you opening your computer to a virus or other such nuisances ?

My daughter has had this twice, turned out it was a security problem with her providor, they had been hacked,, and she and a lot of other peoples addressed had been compromised, she changed her email account and created new passwords.

Five? I for one feel hurt, how dare your spammer be so selective?

Are the rest of us not worth a quick spam?

Or have you been keeping a secret diary saying how cheap the rest of us are?

Jaysay, if you wish to check your security on windows 8,pull the charms from the right hand side in the apps box type Control Panel when opened go for security and maintenance then check all the boxes are ticked.

Neil, it has to be set up right to do the job.(and you have to do the updates) A security system is only as good as the person using it, lets it be.
I have bullguard and it suits me just fine.

Mine scans my system every morning, it scans incoming e-mails...updates regularly and I have never had a problem with mine either John...in fact if I have been under threat, the system has warned me and sorted it.
It is certainly better than anything else I have had and it doesn't slow the machine down.

Re: Bogus Emails

On a strong recommendation from soe of the folks on here I ditched IE....have never looked back....and have never had the same kind of security issues either.
Firefox for me...but it is individual choice...as in life.
Cashy, I got badly burnt with a free anti virus system....and it cost me to get my computer fixed...it ruined my trust in the free ones.......I did have Norton...for about 5 minutes.......that was not for me.
I'm happy with what I have got...and that is what it is all about.

Have no idea how these things work Margaret, But was yer trouble wi the free when yeh were using I.E.? Reason i ask that is fact i had no end of trouble when i used it, Switched to firefox many yrs ago n things are fine.:)

Re: Bogus Emails

I suspect that Microsoft updates sometimes sabotages Firefox.

I sometimes have had to use system restore to get rid of those updates until Firefox overcomes the sabotage with an update of their own.

I am not very computer savvy - I may be wrong but am just speaking from experience.

I now only download Microsoft updates when I want to.

Margaret Pilkington 24-03-2013 13:03

Re: Bogus Emails

Yes it was Cashy...so you may have something there...but when trust is lost...it is gone.
I trust what I am using...though I do realise it is like everything in life...it only works if you do(you have to set it up right and make sure you do the updates and scan your system at regular intervals - and make sure you have your back-up up to date).

Margaret, the windows updates ...they do not seem to affect firefox for me...but I could not begin to tell you why that is...I couldn't even hazard a guess.

I think the advice will only make sense if you have the Windows 8 operating system.
I don't....I have windows 7.

claytonx 24-03-2013 17:56

Re: Bogus Emails

You need to be operating Windows Eight like John has and is now on any new computer bought,it works completely different to all the other Windows programs, it also includes Margaret's pet hate the new I E 10. Hope that is simple don't touch unless you have W 8.

Margaret Pilkington 24-03-2013 17:59

Re: Bogus Emails

Can windows 8 run firefox as an alternative to IE 10........I was alright with IE up to 6 after that I hated it.

claytonx 24-03-2013 18:01

Re: Bogus Emails

I should think so.

Margaret Pilkington 24-03-2013 18:04

Re: Bogus Emails

if that is the case, I would be shot of IE as soon as.

Looked on Google Firefox not yet, only up to W 7.

Its funny when I install win7 then do all the updates M$ make you aware of a handful of browsers and gives you the choice to choose an alternate one. It would be odd to purposefully offer you alternatives and then sabotage them. But. That wouldn't surprise me.

I always update IE. I just never use it.

IMO the only reason for not running windows updates is when running an dodgy copy...

Yay to firefox. Though I prefer Chrome now....

I have just replaced a laptop and I purposely chose one with Windows 7 on it.....though I did notice that they were getting harder(not hard) to find.
I called one supplier to ask if I could have the laptop which was on sale, but have Windows 7 on it.....he asked why would I want to have an old operating system.....I told him that was my business...could he supply one or not...No, was his reply. I went elsewhere.

It was a no cost option - I suspect quite a few businesses are avoiding Windows 8 at the moment because of the impact it would have on productivity being to different to Windows 7

firefox is the best especially with adblock addon but google chrome is just one nasty peice of malware in its self but if you trust and like google then fair play to ya.

explorer used to be good but tehir security updates got further and further apart and too many bad things were been reported mainly due to microsofts lazyness so i switched

I have recently received two emails purporting to come from DHL and Royal Mail. One said there was a parcel to be collected by me from the depot, and the other said a parcel supposedly posted by me was held up at customs. Both emails had attachments which I did not open. This is a scam so be aware in case you get similar.
