Re: Burnley
Hearty congratulations to Burnley for gaining entry into the Premier Division. I would just like to thank Burnley FC for the donation of 6 points to the Manchester United cause next season.
However you have to feel for Sheffield United. They played 46 games to finish in third place and it was all for nothing. Sheffield U won 22 games, drew 14 and lost 10 with a decent goal difference of 25 and gained 80 points. Burnley, on the other hand also played 46 games to finish in 5th place but only won 21 games, drew 13 and lost 12 with a poor goal difference of 12 but only gained 76 points. These play offs are nothing more than a lottery and in this case a smack in the footballing face of Sheffield United. But if the Football League are going to have play offs, and I cannot see it changing its mind on this issue, it should also afford the teams at the bottom of the table the same lottery. Down at the bottom of the table the third bottom team does not get a second chance to avoid the drop, yet like the 3rd placed team it also played 46 games. To be fair the Football League should introduce play offs for the bottom of the table. The bottom two go down and the third bottom and the three teams above them join in a money spinning charade of play offs. The winning team of each match drops out and is safe, whilst the eventual loser gets relegated. |

Re: Burnley
I'm pretty sure when the play-offs were first introduced around 1987 they included teams at the bottom as well. Didn't Charlton stay in the old first division after beating a team from division two in the play-off final?

Re: Burnley
Well done the Clarets!
A fine example of beating the odds, they did today pretty much what they have done all season, got the ball down and played quality attacking football. They had belief in themselves and it payed off big time. They did it on in "Championship" standards, the smallest squad, one of the smallest gates & one of the smallest budgets. Surely there is a template & maybe a lesson for us "Reds" in there if you dare to dream:eek: |
Re: Burnley
Burnleys celebrations could well be short lived. Owen Coyle is now the favourite to take over at Celtic.

The only arrogance I can see here is your self opinionated twaddle. But then that is par for the course for many members of this forum. |
