Today's Grand National
 

Never seen them have to detour round fences before because of what Clare Balding so nicely called " an obstacle in the landing path" eg another horse that didn't make it first time round and has had to be shot.
Don't they usually just move the "obstacle" and cart on? I thought it was really sad as when they all ran by the second time you could see the dead horses still on the course.:(

Me too Lindsey, surely they could have been moved before the rest of the pack came round again - doesn't make it any less sad that these horses had to be shot but to see it so graphically will have upset a lot of folk I thnk

Maybe it's the best way of doing things... for a vet to make a medical decision, shoot the horse and then have the animal removed (probably dragged off behind a tow truck).. would take more than a few minutes.

on the plus side theres gonna be some top notch dog food hitting the shelves so its not all bad news ..

unless of course the local french resturaunt gets there first

Mancie i give you more credit than that.
This is not Spain, the animals are treat with respect.
Dogs and a lot of humans in our part of the world are treat with a lot less.
How on earth with the timespan could these horses have been removed?
If there is a bump on the motorway the road is closed for hours.
Lets get real, this is a sport that has been recognised as a major part of our
way of life, I like a bet as do many.
If you don''t like racing give it a wide berth.

Not sure what you mean.. I was pointing out that to place a shield around the stricken animal and detour the race around those fences was best .. like I say it's not practical to get a dead horse "out of the way" within a few minutes...the only way would be to drag the horse of the course..not very nice.

And we like to think we live in a civilised country, i think not.
If you want to gamble play cards or better still shoot some heroin, gamble with your own life not that of a defenceless animal.

Thats the moment just before the horse broke it's back, pity it didn't land on it's owner.
