Re: Metal Detecting (Including Finds).
AccyX, how's the metal detecting going? Hope you're keeping at it as you never know what might turn up. A rare 1894 dime coin recently sold in America for almost $2,000,000! Only 24 were minted so there's 23 still out there, though doubt they will be in the vicinity of Accrington...but there might be other treasures just waiting to be found. Am sure there are.
Keep detecting - and keep letting us know what you find. |

Sadly, due to the weather (and Mrs E),I haven't been out much lately. As soon as I do I'll be back trying to detect that Accrington hoard. I've found coins from across the pond before so you never know, I may well stumble across one of them remaining 23 dimes. I've tried researching the best places that could increase my chances of finding something of historical significance, under that old tree near that old Manor House etc,but I came to the conclusion you've got to have Lady Luck on your side because our landscapes have changed so much.... ...watch this space :) |

Once again,I headed out yesterday with my detecting stick in search of lost artefacts that hold a key to our history and once again I came back with sod all apart from a few pre-decimal coins and some rubbish.
I'm not too bitter though (honestly) at least it was mild and I had a couple of hours in the fresh air. The finds of note are:- 3 pennies (oldest is 1942) 2 half pennies (oldest 1938) 1 Shilling (1933) 1Sixpence (1922) 1 threepence (1953) 1 YHA badge (early-mid 1900s?) 1 Unknown (blank) button and one Unknown lead ring type object. I decided to have a hour or so on one of my local permissions this morning.
I started out finding nothing but the usual cans, bottle tops and ringpulls... ...then I realised I hadn't ground balanced the detecting stick correctly . Anyhow, with half hour of leisure time left ,I balanced the machine correctly and started finding some coinage :) Items of note are:- 2 early 1900s pennies 2 old keyhole covers 1 1925 sixpence 1 unknown & corroded coin (I will see if it cleans up later) 1 1923 (wren) farthing and another "cats eye". Today I managed to secure another permission for a local (pasture) field.
Believe me,buying a detector is the easy part it's getting permission from land owners where the challenge lays. I don't think I'd of been so determined to find land if I hadn't of committed to buying myself a detector that's for sure. Anyhow, after spending 4hrs wondering in the cold with nothing except two pre-decimal half pennies,I began thinking to myself that the detecting gods were sat laughing at me. Plundering on wether to call it a day or not, I decided to try beneath a few old trees at the bottom of the field. After trying a few trees without a signal my detector starting screeching my ears out and I wasn't digging very long when out popped a (ornate) gold looking object. My heart was racing as I scanned for a hallmark, sadly it wasn't to be :( However, soon after I did find a hallmarked sterling silver kermit the frog pedant :alright:. Attachment 52057 |

Hi Accyexplorer
Just thought you might like to know I was out detecting yesterday, only the third time this year due to the weather. Anyway I stayed local and went on the Coppice and around the lodges. At first it was just the usual Victorian pennies and half pennies I was finding. The first interesting item to come up was a medieval lead spindle whorl, I was well chuffed to find something so old on my own doorstep. The next item I found was a Queen Elizabeth 1st silver shilling very pleased indeed. The coin is very worn and I cannot make out the date but I can definitely identify it as Queen Elizabeth 1st, it would have been stamped sometime between 1558-1603. Sorry I still cant get any pictures on here yet. maybe when i get time i will sit down and figure it out You probably think I am making this up but the first time out this year I found a gents gold ID bracelett. It was worth £235 Second time out I was near Clitheroe Castle and i found nothing |
Re: Metal Detecting (Including Finds).

I've not been detecting for a few days because, well, ruddy Mrs E, life and work have been getting in the way of detecting.
Anyhow,I decided things had to change and today I had a couple of hours in the snow swinging the detecting stick around at the local park. It was lovely and quite at first till a influx of youths (about 10-13yrs old) came and spoilt the silence. One young lad came over after about 10mins and asked "what you looking for?" to which I replied "anything metal". Whilst he was present,I had a signal and he asked if he could dig it up. I was a little reluctant at first, but not wanting to get attacked by snowballs,I showed him how to cut a sod out and I found a pound coin in the hole. I gave it to him and said he could keep it and with that he went running back to his clique. It wasn't long before I had another signal and before I knew it I had all these young whippersnappers round me, they were like seagulls round a chip, asking if they could dig it up. I said "no" but allowed them to stay and watch,I think they were expecting a hoard of pound coins ,but their dreams were short lived as I pulled a rusty can out from the hole :D Well, the finds of note are:- 1 unknown, tooled, lead item 1 (fake bling) dog bone tag 1 silver tiger charm 1 pre decimal penny 2 pre decimal half pennies 1 rusty chain and £4.30p in spendable coins. I went to a local field and I ended up digging nothing but rubbish (ringpulls, bottle tops and rusty cans). The weather was miserable, I got blown about all over the place and ended up having to shelter from hailstones. And then to top it off,I got back home covered from head to toe in mud and discovered that I'd lost my portable phone charger. Re: Metal Detecting (Including Finds).
AccyX. Out of interest I have done a little bit of quick research and have found some things pertaining to the man I think just might be your Grenadier Guardsman, Joseph Bond, which I thought you would like to know. I am fairly certain this is the same Joseph as everything fits in.
He was a Private in WWI, joined the forces in September 1916 and had been to France. On April 13th 1918 his wife was notified he was missing. In December of that year, however, he was one of two Burnley soldiers who returned home. He had been in captivity near Essen and told some awful tales of the treatment he had received. It seems that he actually lived in Sabden and before joining up was a gamekeeper for Mr. Starkie of Huntroyde. After he left the Guards he returned to being gamekeeper for this gentleman. He was still there in 1940 as there was a report of him catching a little owl – a rare bird in those parts, so rare that this actually made the news. In 1918 the family address was 2a Heyhouses, Sabden. In 1932 his eldest daughter Catherine Muriel Bond married Herbert Parsons. That will give you something to go on. I just hope I have followed the right man. |
Re: Metal Detecting (Including Finds).
He also visits Rossendaleonline too.
|
Re: Metal Detecting (Including Finds).
Thanks for the input folks,I am determined to reunite it with a family member of the recipient.
As it stands though I keep hitting dead ends, perhaps my new contact,a chap similar to Retlaw in many ways, can hopefully enlighten me. I'm thinking of making a newspaper appeal to see if anyone comes forward. What do you think? I wonder how many descendants Joseph will have when folk see a silver medal up for grabs? |
Re: Metal Detecting (Including Finds).
I have been reliably informed that many WW1 medals are not in the hands of family members and that there are 1000's in cabinets at Fulwood.
I have also been asked to pass on the message that appealing in local papers may bring little or no success as this man was not from Greater Accrington. I really don't know if people value the medals which belonged to the soldiers in either of the great wars. You see these folk taking the medals along to Flog it and The Real Deal....and getting just a paltry amount. To me this disrespects the medal and the man who fought for his country to get it. |
Re: Metal Detecting (Including Finds).
Quote:
For me,reuniting it with a family member would beat any monetary gain so it won't be going up for sale (by me). As I mentioned previously many medal were discarded by the soliders and also a large amount were sold as scrap and melted down. I think around 4million of these particular medals were issued, giving a scary insight into the scale of the war. If it was my relatives medal, I'd walk to Fulwood for the chance to have it in my possession. |
Re: Metal Detecting (Including Finds).
Again assuming I am on the right Joseph, using Lancashire BMD as a quick check I have found that there was also a son as well as daughter Catherine Muriel. This was Frank born in 1907 in Padiham. He married Elsie Birtwell in 1934 in Sabden. Joseph's wife's maiden name was Parkincoates but unfortunately I haven't been able to trace any children of either Catherine's or Frank's, which is not to say there weren't any of course.
I'm afraid this isn't going to be much help to you, but I'll keep checking. Thank goodness for the Internet! |

Re: Metal Detecting (Including Finds).
AccyX. Still assuming I am following the right family I have found out a bit more courtesy of Lancashire BMD. As well as Catherine Muriel and Frank there was another daughter Sarah, born 1905. I still can’t find any children from Catherine or Frank but Sarah married John Thomas Ingham in 1936. Their daughter, Dorothy Muriel Ingham was born in Great Harwood in 1943.
Dorothy Muriel married David Hepworth in 1965 and their two sons are Alistair Mark Hepworth born in 1969 and Nicholas David born in 1972. Both boys were born in Clitheroe. If I have followed the ‘clues’ correctly then by my reckoning these two would be the great-grandsons of your Joseph. |

Have just found an address in Grindleton for Dorothy and David Hepworth, as above. If you can't find it I can p/m you.

Re: Metal Detecting (Including Finds).
If you do contact Mrs. Hepworth, AccyX, it will be very interesting to know if she is, in fact, Joseph's granddaughter. On the other hand I could be all up-a-wattle. Hope I'm not.

Re: Metal Detecting (Including Finds).
I've got a query regarding metal detecting.
Firstly,do you think carrying a metal detector could be classed by the police as going equipt to steal? If it was 2am and you was lurking around lets say a Roman heritage site, I could understand. But if I was carrying my detecting stick down the road, going about my lawful business,do you think this could be classed as suspicious behaviour by the police and give them reasonable grounds for say a "stop and search"? Secondly,if I found something while participating in my past time but I don't take reasonable steps to find its owner is this "theft by finding" in the eyes of the law? I wonder what the police would do if I went to the station with all my finds and said I've found these and then handed them a carrier bag half full of my detecting finds :D |
Re: Metal Detecting (Including Finds).
Jason are you asking this question because you have been accosted by the police...or is it just academic?
There must be some guidelines which metal detector enthusiasts follow......have you sought out these. https://finds.org.uk/getinvolved/guides/codeofpractice Maybe this will help. I haven't read it so I do not know if it answers your queries. |
Re: Metal Detecting (Including Finds).
Laws on Detecting - DiggingUpThePast
Just a quick 'google'brought these up....I am sure there will be more if you want to search |
Re: Metal Detecting (Including Finds).
Purely theoretical M,I'm aware and also adhere to the code of conduct for metal detecting.
It was just something I read on a forum about a chap who was stopped by the local bobbies for carrying his detector, and they allegedly said this act can be seen as going equipt to steal and proceeded to perform a "stop and search". I'm no legal beagle, but is carrying a metal detector (with lawful excuse) reasonable grounds for one of these search things? Hmmm,I'm not too sure is it. They also informed him that anything significant he finds should be reported at the station then the police can do their enquires into whether it's actually lost or not.. ..Well since most of the items I have found have been in the ground for 50+years I doubt anyone will be in a rush to claim its theirs :) |
Re: Metal Detecting (Including Finds).
Margaret, I read the links you provided and it really is interesting. Didn't know there was so much involved, and so many do's and don'ts.
Like you, I also wondered why AccyX wanted to know the law about carrying a metal detecting device. Thank goodness it was only a 'what if' question. By the way, AccyX, have you had any luck with giving the WWI medal to Mr. B's descendant yet? Or is it back to the drawing board? Hope you've managed to locate the right person. |

Yes Dotti, I was just at an idle moment so I thought I would just do a quick search.
I can't imagine any of our local police having time to stop, someone carrying a metal detector.....They should be too busy checking that the recent legislation regarding the micro-chipping of dogs has been carried out in accordance with the law.....and the less recent law of those driving whilst on the phone. As Jason says, finding the owner of something that has been lying for decades in the soil is not something that they should be worrying about. If the owner of the field is happy for someone to be doing a bit of prospecting then that should be the end of it....well, unless something of historical interest or value is unearthed and that is fully covered by law. |

Re: Metal Detecting (Including Finds).
I can't remember the last time I saw a real police person on foot.
I see them frequently with their blues and twos on haring through the centre of town(well, there is nothing to linger in town for, I guess) It might all change when the new Bobby house opens on Broadway......but only between 9 and 5 and not on a weekend or a bank holiday. |

I've two paparazzi wanting to publish a appeal in the local papers too so fingers crossed. You'll be the first to know when I do reunite it,after all,if it wasn't for yourself and others on here, I may of lost interest and chucked it in a drawer :) |
Re: Metal Detecting (Including Finds).
Hi AccyX. Thought I'd 'help' a bit further (in other words sticking my nose in a bit more, sorry - can't help myself!) and have now found the phone number for the Hepworths at Grindleton. Am sending a p/m to you with this information. A call to Dorothy there would either end the search or, if the wrong family, would eliminate her from your enquiries. If she is Mr. B's granddaughter then no need for the public appeal, though it would make a 'good news' story and worthy of publishing. Best of luck with your endeavours.

Re: Metal Detecting (Including Finds).
If Jason phones this lady and it IS the right person, then I can see this story making the Nationals and perhaps even the North West teatime news.
Wouldn't that be good? More so, if he mentioned the help from half a world away. |
Re: Metal Detecting (Including Finds).
It would be better still, Margaret, if it is the right person, and if it becomes a newsworthy story, that Accrington Web and its network of friends gets a mention.
Of course it all hinges on if the clues we have followed have pointed in the right direction. If not, then at least Jason has tried to find the right home for the medal, and he deserves accolades for having given it his best. However, if it is a bum steer then I do hope he doesn't give up on it. |

I haven't had much time for detecting this week, but I managed to get out this morning for a quick hour on a local permission.

Re: Metal Detecting (Including Finds).
Just a little update on the medal.
Today,I rang Dorothy an she was understanbly a little overwhelmed by the call, her son (Nicholas) called me back and after a little chat we swapped contact details. With him living out of the county at the min,we are going to meet up in a few weeks when he is in the area and then I can hopefully reunite him with his great grandfathers medal. I'd like to thank all those who helped track down this family, give yourself a pat on the back :alright: |
Re: Metal Detecting (Including Finds).
That is really wonderful news. Well Done Jason....and well done Dotti....you both deserve a putty medal.

Re: Metal Detecting (Including Finds).
Good work AccyEx. Would be interesting to know more of the medal's "story" and how it came to be lost.

Dorothy's son said that he "didn't realise his family member was awarded a medal",though he was fully aware of his great grandfather Joseph and his experiences during the war. It may of been misplaced by Joseph himself an seen as no great loss at the time :idunno:.... ...the main thing is that this family heirloom its going home and it's all thanks to Accyweb and it's members for the info they gleaned :) |
Re: Metal Detecting (Including Finds).
Well done, Jason. Sounds like the trail followed did lead to one of Mr. B’s family members, which is good news.
I’d also like to know how the medal got lost in the first place. Maybe that is something we will never know. Main thing is you will be making sure it is at last with someone who will value it and the history behind it. Please keep us informed as to the ‘handing over’ when this takes place. Hope you now find something that is of great value to yourself. Here's to happy (and successful) metal detecting. |
Re: Metal Detecting (Including Finds).
Dotti, I think you have to be commended on your sleuthing.
While it would be good if Jason found something for himself, I think that the pleasure gained from reuniting a family with a medal they did not know existed has a joy all of its own......and brings pleasure to both Jason and the family who get the medal back. That is 'gold' of a different kind. Priceless! |
