My new toy!
Heh,
some asked so here's teh details. As most on here have read, I currently drive a Volvo estate. Its a 200 bhp 2.5 litre turbo witha n LPG conversion. Its also driven the equivilant of to the moon. I've also ownedit longer than any other car in my motoring history. so I'm a bit bored and fancy a change. Also in our lives is that Julie is expecting and as new babies tend to suck teh life out of bank balances we thought it would be better to buy before its born than wait till after. So.............. Welcome to my ownership my new toy. its got 310 bhp, an engine of 4.2 litres with 8 cylinders in the usual V formation, Rally pedigree 4WD :D its got an all aluminium space frame chassis, is over 5 metres long, does 0-60 in about 7 seconds and is restricted to 155 mph top speed. the interior is full leather, has dual zone climate, heated electric seats where even the keys are setup so when you get in it remembers 'your' settings for seat, seat belt and mirrors, elctrical headrests, electric rear sunblinds and top quality stereo. It has a 5 speed automatic with tiptronic gearchange and new cost more than 50 THOUSAND pounds. Its also got a very well done quality LPG system fitted. :D So what is it? its an Audi A8 4.2 Quattro SPORT. :D Luxo barge of amazing quality but 4WD monster of back lanes when the feeling takes you. Pictures to follow when I've washed, clay'd and polished it :D |
Re: My new toy!
But will it blend? :D

Re: My new toy!
at least as well as Clarkson managed :D

The box will have a “sport” mode on it but in the regular “drive” mode it has what Audi call Dynamic shift programme ( DSP) if the car is driven moderately the electronics engage a different shift setup than if you drive a little more briskly. On occasion it feels as though there are about 10 gears there and it just cant decide which one it wants. Dunno if I like it or not…best keep it in “sport” mode :D |

Re: My new toy!
heh, mines got a torson system, the haldex only came in with the TT
Not had chance for a proper play yet ( insurance only started yesterday ). I'm looking forward to building up to her(only an idiot thinks they can jump in one of these types of cars and 'use' it straight away, i've never driven a performance AWD before for example so some learning to do there! ) . |
Re: My new toy!
a great engine like that it will be hard not to plant the loud pedal.

they'd have to actually have real policemen out there for that to happen rather than just cameras :D
one of the things i pride myself on for driving is that whilst I like driving quickly I do so only when its a)safe, b)sensible an c) unlikely to cost me time money or license. i also constantly look to improve my driving skills by constantly reviewing my driving and in particular any 'near misses' or potential incidents even if they are outside my control as to whether i could have seen or reacted differently. This is something that most bikers do all teh time but few car drivers seem to understand. Fast cars are fun and can be perfectly safe, its when the squidgy thing behind teh wheel is less capable than they think they are that it goes all wrong. |

I didn't fall off though, I was knocked off by someone who made a poor assumption.
"He's a Biker, they always go through on Amber so I thought I'd nip through after him" I would say that someone who covers 30K+ a year and have no fault accidents in that time and one speeding for 35 in a 30 at 7am on a clear summers morning. These are teh only points I've had in 20 years of driving I don't think I'm doing too badly. I agree wholeheartidly with Retlaw, Bikers are generally much better Car drivers due to their roadcraft. |

Re: My new toy!
you shouldn't be so cheeky to ask what stuff costs all the time then :D
Seriously though, it was a bargain as I am rather a good negotiator and not worried about offering stupidly low offers. rules of negotiation 0) Be Polite throughout! 1) start Very low that even you are embarrassed 2) be well informed. there was a couple of cars available albeit without LPG on already for similar money 3) point out he's trying to sell a 4.2 litre V8 group 20 ins car in a financial climate of total meltdown. 4) be prepared to walk away and let him think about it.(I did and he called me 8 hours later) A deal doesn't have to be done in 10 mins flat. if it takes a couple of days to save 1K its a fair old hourly rate. 5) don't ever buy a car when you really NEED one. The fact I still have a perfectly capable car makes it no push to get one NOW. 6) be calm, show no excitement. If you do he knows you really want it! 7) point out (especially if its a niche car) that its costing him to advertise it and how long before someone else rings up?(this doesn't work for mass market stuff where buyesr ate 2 a penny) 8) remind him its an ever depreciating asset. in 6 months it will have lost most of the difference between what he wants now and what you are offering now. Cash in pocket is there to invest/spend/etc as he sees fit. 9) remember there will always be another along soon. (Unless you are buying something ultra rare/collectable in which case he will probably not budge an inch so its just a case of pay up or miss out) 10) have an absoute max value written in stone and NEVER EVER go above it. :D |
Re: My new toy!
So go on then what did you pay on it.:D:D:D:D:D:D
After a new car myself, will have to remember them tips. Oh and where's the pics. |
Re: My new toy!
Don't ask then ;)
|
Re: My new toy!
I'll try and get some pics on Friday weather dependant after its been cleaned and polished.
I'm finding more and more nice things about it though like set up the drivers seat( all electric including the head rest height), the wing mirrors, the seat belt height adjustment, the steering wheel adjustment(all electric). Store them and then by pressing buttons in a certain order links those settings to a specific key. So when I approach the car and unlock it with my key it sets everything up for me, when julie uses her key its all set up for her, all fully automatically! There does seem to be something wrong though, when you press that pedal on the right, the needles more up far too quickly for how it 'feels' :D |

Re: My new toy!
There a very nice car, my first car was Audi S4 and it was fantastic. I made the error of 'trading up' to a Mercedes but corrected that mistake and drive the Audi RS6 now and its a monster. I opted for the estate version but even so, 450bhp.
Youll love your Audio A8, just so much power and lots of features. Although who ever bought it new must be crying!. I didnt pay £55000 for my first house. There are dozens of Audi part suppliers if your warranty has expired and most high end garages can carry out work at less than the £100 per Audi rate. Happy driving & if you see a black RS6 out in Accrington it could be me :mosher: |
Re: My new toy!
isnt the rs6 engine the same ? and both cars must weigh 2 tonnes?
|
Re: My new toy!
The ten-cylinder V-configuration engine in the RS 6 is based on the V10 powerplants of the Audi S6 and Audi S8, but has been redeveloped in practically every respect to attain the significantly higher level of performance. The twin turbochargers ensure an impressively constant stream of power over the entire engine speed range: the mighty peak torque of 650 Nm is available across the entire range from 1,500 to 6,250 rpm; maximum output is available between 6,250 and 6,700 rpm.
There a realy nice car and more than capable of taking on DB9's and other such £150000 cars!. But for value for money the older Audi A8 is simily one of the finest cars on the market. You get so much car for the money. The RS6 is a pricey bit of kit, but will last me 10+ years |
Re: My new toy!
did u see that pic doing the rounds of the rs6 bent round a tree ? guy was unharmed aswell, i like the bi-turbos its the one thing i hate about my impreza is the dead area up too 3000 rpm but hoping to have that fixed by summer
|
Re: My new toy!
Ive got that picture framed, my friend gave it me when my RS6 arrived as a little 'keep safe'.
The Impreza is a nice machine, what age is yours if you dont mind me asking? I opted for an EVO8 for a while but the Impreza always seemed to have a special feel about it. |
Re: My new toy!
its an 05 STI ppp sat at 350bhp with matching torqueys.
my mate has an evo8 fq300 and i just dont get along with it at all |
Re: My new toy!
Thats a nice Impreza, i only asked the age due to the number of 98 99 00 plates out there with a stated 350bhp and actual 200bhp or less by the time the engine is worn out!. But the 05 Impreza is a cracking machine and more than capable of punching above its weight. Ive seen them taking on 911's before now. Although the few spoil it for the many who have good imprezas. Too often you see a knackered Impreza rattling down the high street making people cough with the fumes and cover there ears!. Nice car you've got there, must be fun in the snow.
|
Re: My new toy!
very true about the older ones, u can pick them up for 2 grand now but the uk turbo's where only ever 216bhp but once u speak to the owner its 400bhp :D
there not great in the snow but i do have dccd on mine which helps me balance the power in the snow |

The TVR is a fantastic car but when Jump Leads are supplied by TVR with every TVR it tells you somthing!. Great cars when they work, i had the pleasure of driving a Speed 6 for 2 weeks. It started 10 out of the 14 days and was a real head turner. Not refined in anyway, just a pure driving car.

Re: My new toy!
1 question if i may !!
what is the point in spending copious amounts of cash on a car that has all this power and speed which cannot be used (legally) on uk roads ?? maybe its true what they say, http://earthfirst.com/wp-content/upl...-tiny-dick.jpg :D.....jokin btw.....but a serious question |
Re: My new toy!
who says you can't use most of this? there are no 'acceleration limits', only speed limits, there are times when all that power makes driving safer. I had an overtake yesterday where in a 'normal' car I would have been exposed to risk for twice as long as I was due to the fact I could quickly accelerate and then return to my side of the road.
Also at 70mph my car is at not much over tickover making it a very serene and relaxed place to be, a 1 litre saxo at 70 is ringing its neck and noisy and not relaxed or serene in any way shape or form. Additionally there are places to use all this power, they are called tracks and a lot of people with fast cars do track days as a way of using their cars to teh 'full' Plus, who says I've spent copious amounts of cash? :D |
Re: My new toy!
Quote:
so i presume when it accelerates quickly it slows down just as quick...or does that child in the road you didnt see end up twisted n dead in the gutter ?...but then again your a safe driver so that wouldnt matter !!! and in a normal car if there are risks you wouldnt try the overtake in the first place, but because you have a powerful car you take that risk and overtake anyway, causing more danger !!! and i know about track days, they are basically for souped (sp?) up road cars, the fact stands that the only time you can fully appreciate the power of the car is on a track, i cant understand how it is legal to soup (sp) up cars to such a high spec... anyway rant over ... :D |
Re: My new toy!
yes it does slow down very quickly as well, plus when driving 'quickly' I ( I can't speak for others) concentrate 110% on what I'm doing, not whats on the radio, who's texting me etc.
Observation is a funny thing, the more you 'do it' the better you get at it and bikers are VERY good as we are usually teh one who hurts if we get it wrong irrespective of who's fault it is. I've sat with teh lad I car share with and we did an experiment, he basically commeneted on everything that he could 'see' as we drove downa road for ac ouple of miles, then I did. He was gob smacked to the amount of stuff I was seeing that didn't even register in his mind. Even that sort of 6th sense stuff where I'd comment that a bird would fly off at an inappropriate time etc. Risk is another of those funny things, and one that often gets bikers a bad name from people that have no idea what its like on a bike. You see, what to you is a high risk overtake in a fast car or bike is a simple and very low risk when you understand the capability of the machine. One of the things that our new shiny compensation culture society is breeding is people with very poor risk analysis skills. When I were a lad you went on rope swings etc and you reached a point where you decided teh rope was too high, too weak, not tied tightly etc. This was usually as a result of falling off a few times. Now kids don't have that awareness and it makes them less capable of assessing risks in other areas of life. why shouldn't people 'soup' up cars? th epedal on teh right is an infinately variable control and even believe it or not has an 'off' position!!! :D |
Re: My new toy!
It is true that a Track day is required for a powerful car to fully open up. You cant do 155mph + on any road safely.
BUT any car is only as fast as the person driving it. Top end cars tend to have top end brakes, with the second hand car market its a bit hit and miss as cheaper parts are often used and this affects the way a car handles. You can drive an BMW M3 as fast as a Saxo, 70mph is 70mph no matter what your sat in. I think an extended licence should be required for any car over 300bhp, but only so the driver knows what dangers can occur with loss of traction and yes this applies to quattro Audi's. Ive driven powerful cars all my life and never killed anyone, my brakes have saved my life and that of others far more than the ability to 'speed'. I just think a Metro is just as dangerous as a Porsche, its down to the driver and this is where the goverment should enforce sensible laws. No one should be able to jump out of a 'normal car' and then jump into a sports car. Where all great drivers and legends in our own heads but i think we would all agree, additional training to make the roads a safer place would be a good idea no matter what your age or past driving history is. Unless ive missed understood the law, this is how a Bike licence works??? |
Re: My new toy!
Bike licenses work ona number of levels
If you pass on a 125 you can ride up to 33bhp machines for 2 years then you are free to ride whatever. If you are over 21 you can take Direct Access which is taken on 500cc bike or above and you can ride anything straight away ( insurance costs depending!!!) I'm all for a 'performance license' but its difficult to set a limit on whats performance car. 150bhp in a 7 type car is hugely quick, 180bhp in a large barge is not so. so do we do it on 0-60? or in real world times a 40-70? I'd also love to see regular retests(5 years or so) to ensure that people can't fall into bad habits. I'd also agree that more training would be a very good thing and would be happy to partake. i'd argue something in your 70 is 70 comment, emergency stopping from 70 in a saxo or in a 'fast' car will be a hugely different result so is 70 teh same irrespective of what you are in? from a safety perspective I'd say not. I'd also much rather be in my HUGE A8 than a saxo if I was going to hit something at 70..... |
Re: My new toy!
A performance car will as a general rule always stop before a 'normal' car, but somthing like your Audi is a massive moving mass to stop and as such do tend to have over sized brakes which makes them so easy to drive. My Audi can go from 70mph to 0mph so quickly you actually feel sick and i like brakes like that but they can allow you to drive much more quickly than is safe. Such as leaving a motorway etc.
70 mile is 70 mile when you hit someone, but i do agree if your hitting say another car or brick wall then the type of car does make a huge difference!!. The make / model of car has no reflection on its ability to keep the driver safe in a crash. The BMW Mini has an Ncap rating of 5 Star where as the Audi A6 only had a 3 star rating until 2004. A Huge Ford Ranger 2008 has a low rating of 2 stars and thats a huge vehicle that people think there kids are safe in. Executive cars are not always the safer option, brake pedals can rip your foot apart if they do not collapse and the same goes for the steering wheel this applies to any car which does not carry a high Ncap rating. I sold my Mercedes C Coupe when i found it had a 3 star Ncap rating and thats a £35000 car!. The new generation of Corsa, Focus, Fiesta are very good safe cars and put the past to shame with there features, price, Carbon Foot Print and Ncap ratings. |
Re: My new toy!
Is this the fastest car in the world?
0 to 60 in 1.67 seconds at a top speed o0f 270!! I know ya cant drive that fast, but it does look GOOD!!!!:mosher: Barabus TKR...... http://www.rsportscars.com/eng/artic...arabus_tkr.jpg |

I have been in cars with both types, where a chavvy boy racer will rag the car to within an inch of its life and change gear about 2rpm before the redline and assume that quick in quick out is the best policy a car enthuisiast will understand where the torque curve of his car is and be much more aware of all the things his car is doing ie: understanding the road condition, understanding where the limits of grip are. And as for modifications, i genuinley believe the first mods on any car with performance in mind should be to uprate the tyres, brakes and suspension, as the old saying goes POWER IS NOTHING WITHOUT CONTROL. Oh by the way if any VW or Audi owners want a local enthuisasts forum to join let me know and ill be happy to PM you the details. |
Re: My new toy!
intrested point speedy,
now i always used to drive my cars by feeding the power in, same as when i had the bike so that it keeps the balance of the car perfect but in the impreza the boost control is controlled by throttle position so it has to be flat open to maximise boost. mine does 0-60 in 4.2 secs and stops very fast with brembo's and peformance friction carbo metallic pads on. |

Haha i know the exact feeling your talking about, its better than any drink or drug in the world.
Scoobys may not be as "hardcore" as evos but IMO scoobys sound 10x better, just a shame they have become so common (obviously im referring to the older shape imprezas now mostly owned by chavs). The newer shape imprezas are very good looking and have amazing presence on the road. |

Re: My new toy!

200bhp is nothing to be honest but i do think new drivers (notice i didnt say young) should have some sort of power limit applied for a length of time, i also think compulsary extra traing should be done i.e skidpan, poor weather, motorway driving and the likes. |
Re: My new toy!
I work at booze buster on union road.
I think a limit on the power/wieght ratio would be the best soloution as its probably the most accurate way to measure a cars potential performance. |
Re: My new toy!
Speaking of advanced driving courses, I have had these recommended to me:
Ride Drive | Defensive Driving > Advanced Motorcycle Training > Fleet Course Car Limits I definitely think its a good idea to go on advanced courses if you want to learn how to drive your performance car 'properly'. |

When I wrote “chipped” I did in fact mean that it had been re-mapped. The re-mapping was done by Superchips via a visit to Demon Tweeks in Wrexham where I took the car for the work mentioned. The diagnostic port was hooked up to a laptop, the info on the ECU downloaded and sent off to Superchips. The re-mapped programme is sent back and installed. No actual “chip” replacement took place. |

It was a £490 installation, whether it was a quality install will always be open to debate, it’s what I could afford and I’m happy. Not sure about the "generic" thing, it's a specific make/model product, so in that sense it isn't generic. Having said that I guess it will be generic to all the makes and models of that specific type. As said, all my stuff was downloaded, the ECU wiped and replaced with the new stuff. There was no dyno involved to determine what would be required, guess they would have done it to show the "before" and "afters" if asked...for a small fee no doubt :D |
