help .
Right I know nothing about photography but since i got my new pc i thought id try using it to play around with some pics , now when i downloaded them from camera or from email they all came through full size but when i try to open them up all i seem to get are thumbnails and cant get them to fit my screen without bluring .
Im currently using windows picture and fax viewer . Is it just the way my pics download or is there a way i can get them back to full size ...ive tried everything today but to no avail ... has anyone any ideas ...cheers |
Re: help .
Once you've shrunk them they stay shrunk.
That's because a digital pic is made up of pixels, individual little squares. The bigger the pic the more little squares it has in it and the sharper it looks. You can view it at say 20% of the original and no squares are apparent. View it at 500% and you'll see the squares. Now the problem arises that if you SHRINK the pic to 20% you haven't reduced the size of the pixels, you've reduced the number of pixels and once that has been done, and saved as such, you can never get back those lost pixels. So, the answer you need is to find out how you have been saving your images to your PC to have caused the shrinkage. |
Re: help .
Can you give us a bit more info. what make/model of camera. Are you using the supplied driver or some other method (Card reader). You mention email.... please expand what you mean by that. emails from others with pictures embedded or something else.
It could be that your camera is downloading both a full size image and a thumbnail and you are opening the wrong one. One way to tell is to let us know the filesize of the image you are opening. (Right click - properties) Windows Picture/fax viewer is rubbish. you ideally want a proper photo editor. There are loads , I use The Gimp. its freeware so no 'dodgy software involved. and is extremly powerful in what it can do. To install it there are 2/3 packages you need. Do this first http://downloads.sourceforge.net/gim....6-1-setup.zip then this http://downloads.sourceforge.net/gim...86-setup-1.zip If you want the help files (probably recommended if you are very new to playing with images) then install this as well http://downloads.sourceforge.net/gim...0.11-setup.zip There are loads of tutorials for GIMP on the net.http://www.gimp.org/tutorials/ is one good starting point but there are loads more for when you get more advanced. |

Here's an original sized image:
Here's the same image viewed at 20% as in a thumbnail: Now here's the image shrunk to 20% which looks just the same: But when you try to enlarge that back to the original size all you get are enlarged pixels (resulting in blurred image): |
Re: help .
heh willow, I know what you are saying but technically its not 'blurred', its pixelated :D
From the OP I'm not sure Cherokee is opening a full sized image. We need to be sure that that is the case. However Windows Picture viewer does need binning no matter what |

Pixelation can be incredibly handy for anyone who likes doing cross stitch. It's a great aid in designing images. I've also used cross stitch patterns to help me create little computer graphics too. Ah the versatility of life :) |

Re: help .
So, if you are looking at the first image and want to save it to your PC what do you do? And what happens when you do it?
|
Re: help .
pixelation is also what happens when you use digital zoom on your camera.... everyone turn OFF digital zoom now.. its rubbish ...its only doing what willow has just done... it isnt actually zooming in.

|
Re: help .
if i try to bring it back to full image it turns out like the one willow displays
|
Re: help .
That image is only 72 x 96 pixels. How did you 'dowload' it? What did you physically do to get it on your PC?

As for Cherokees problem it does look like you haven't 'downloaded' what you thought you had. If its a web picture when viewing the full sized image, Right click and select "save image as". Then put it wherever you want it on your PC. If you know a thumbnail links directly to an image (i.e. the link URL ends in .jpg .gif or any other image file extention) you can choose "save target as " from the thumbnail. |

Re: help .
Can you just check one thing - save the image from my post as you normally do then where you've saved the pic on your PC, right click on it and check "properties" - tell me how big it says the image is (ie width and height in pixels).
|
Re: help .
Ive done it twice willow the first says size 2.48kb
and the one ive just done now says size 60.2 kb so how come ive got 2 different sizes ,,grrrr this is so confusing |
Re: help .
I'm trying to work out what you're doing. It sounds like it's not fax and picture viewer at fault but the way you are saving the image. It should be 375 x 500 pixels (mine is 60.29kb). I'm trying to deal with PIXELS here because it's pixelation which is the cause of your 'blurring'.

Re: help .
Cherokee, try opening teh 60K one. let us know if A) it shows pixelated and b) if when you've closed it teh size has changed
If you tell us teh EXACT procedure you go through to save teh image that may also help |
Re: help .
KSH resized them photos for me so that i could put them on accyweb. If you want the full sized ones i'll send them to you.

Re: help .
Cherokee, can you please explain exactly what you do to save the images onto your computer? Avoid words like 'scan', 'download' etc. Try giving simple step by step info such as:
I put my cursor over the pic. I right click with my mouse A box appears on the screen ............. etc If those three above statements are what you do, what happens when the box appears? Does it give you options to choose from? What option do you choose? The large image which I posted from the AccyWeb meet I got by looking at your thumbnail and then going back to the original post and looking for the original pic - I then clicked on that thumbnail, got the fullsized image on my screen, selected the URL from above it and copied and pasted that into my post. I'm also not clear if you are making a distincton between saving something onto your own PC or simply seeing it on your screen. Do you have that AccyWeb Christmas photo in a folder on your PC? |
Re: help .
how did Jen send them to you, email? If email, did you do "Save Attachments" or some other way to save them permanently on your PC?
yes via email then i get option to either scan and save to computer which automatically saves them to my yahoo photes ,or i can download attachment which puts them into my pictures folder You mention scan?????????? please explain... is this scan as in look at them or scan as in something to do with a picture scanner??? Unfortunately the english language is full of ambuguities, we need to understand exactly what you are doing to help as above entwis just option i have on email |

Scan is not an option I can ever recall being a default option on any email client so I'm guessing its part of some Yahoo installation thats 'adding functionality' to your email program. In my opinion stuff like this tends to just add confusion/problems. When you say 'download attachment' that doesn't sound quite right. an email comes with attachments. you can either save them or view them in the email. they shouldn't be a need to download them. In your response to Willow, you mention that a slideshow in WP&F only shows the thumbnails. Can you say how you are doing teh slideshow. Do you click on a folder(which folder) and start something or are you opening WP&F and starting it from there? TBH its ounds like a problem that actually sat with you would be solved in minutes, its quite hard to sometimes try and understand what people are actually doing and what programs they have installed that are 'interferring' in teh normal process |
Re: help .
CHEERS ENTWIS to be honest its doing my head in but i will keep trying till i get it right as for email im with yahoo and if someone sends you sonething ie folder or pic it gives you the option to download attachment and when i click on that it comes up in a seperate box to which i press run... sorry if ive not been very explanitary with all this but half of the bloody jargon is alien to me haha
but i will keep trying |
Re: help .
I agree with what Ian said, that if we were actually there with you we'd probably have it sussed in seconds.
Can I just ask a favour please? When you are quoting what someone else has posted could you do it by clicking on the "quote" button so that it comes up in an embedded quotation box because it gets a bit confusing otherwise trying to work out which bit is your reply to which bit from someone else. I'm going to have a look at Yahoo and come back. |
Re: help .
oops sorry willow..........:D
|
Re: help .
its webmail based, that does answer a lot.
And its Yahoo........ Abandon hope all ye who enter here!!!! :D sorry Cherokee, only joking............. when you click 'run' you should actually be clicking Save. this will then make a copy of the image or whatever ON YOUR PCS HARD DISK. Then you can do wit it what you like. I'm guessing that its a sort of mix up thats happening between Yahoos web based interface and your PCs configuration as to what it should do when you click 'Run'. |
Re: help .
OK, I've had a look at Yahoo and I think they are using the term "scan" to mean "scan for virus"
That clears up that little bit of confusion. :D We're getting nearer. |
Re: help .
Actually I've just had an idea!!!!
Cherokee, do you use MSN? If so we can do a remote desktop thing where Willow or myself could actually control your PC as if we were sat there!. Let me know if you are willing to do this. My MSN details are in my profile, feel free to add me |
Re: help .
I,ve never actually used msn Ian mainly because it used to crash my last pc but i will have a go at trying it and get back to ya ..cheers
|
Re: help .
Yes and now I see where it says "download" so that explains that too.
And when you do that your image arrives the same size as it was when the person sent it? |
Re: help .
It's all yours for now Ian - we are having dinner now. I'll pop back later to see how you are getting on.
|
Re: help .
thanks willow
|
Re: help .
:), thanks willow, it was doing my head in trying to work out what scan was doing there, should have thought that these people don't trust you to have your own AV software :D
as said, slow but sure progress....... |
