You people would appreciate how good a job he is doing, but really this antipodean thing must be balanced. Could Blackburn not give us Ryan for a month or so?

Antipodean means any person from the Australasia region which includes Oz, NZ and I think the Fijian islands if I am not mistaken. No doubt Kiwi will confirm

A can of antipodean worms waiting to be opened Cashy?.
(It has been said that one of Alfred.E.'s forebears was a deportee to 'the Colonies'. Unfortunately he never made it, being one of the few men to successfully tunnel his way out of a Prison Ship !.).

Keep 'em Rockin' !.

I thought you were taking the mick when you asked which is why I never bothered replying - an antipodean is a person that is from the other side of the world to yourself. For us this is Oz - so if you went 'down under', you yourself would be 'antipodean' and vice versa.

It all orginates from antipodes - google it :)

"The antipodes of Australia are in the North Atlantic Ocean (ie us UK'ers), while parts of Spain, Portugal, and Morocco are antipodal to New Zealand"

Well thank you Jimmy...I had no idea that that was its true meaning.I just thought it was a title bestowed upon us and our cousins 'accross the ditch' by you lot many moons ago.

Such words are far too complex for our southern hemisphere cousins. That's why they just call us Pommy B**tards.

Oh well - obviously this site is the font of all knowledge, so where did our antipodean cousins get Pommy from? I have learned one thing regarding the true meaning of antipodean thanks to Jimbo, so could someone please answer the other question (and no it is not a trick). Is it anything to do with the French word for apples or spuds Pomme or Pomme de terre?

The truth is that nobody really knows. But try the Guardian: Why are British people called poms? | Notes and Queries | guardian.co.uk.
