The goalkeeper situation

Hopefully, we are going to have the decision on Jason Petkovic's work permit today, but, even if it's a yes, that won't help us tomorrow.

So, presumably, we'll be giving a spell between the sticks to our two trialist goalies - Danny Alcock from Barnsley and Scott Tynan from Notts Forest. This could turn out to be a good thing, as Coley will be able to form a realistic assessement of their capabilities against higher league opponents. It'll also be interesting to see if our other trialist Ian Hughes from Huddersfield, has a run out.

What is the admission charge for the game tomorrow?
Is it same as league prices?

Wynonie Harris 09-07-2004 12:15

Re: The goalkeeper situation

Yes, but prices will be lower for some of the other friendlies

Re: The goalkeeper situation

Alcock was only in goal for the 1st half which finished 0-0.

Don't know who was in for the second.

Wynonie Harris 12-07-2004 07:39

Re: The goalkeeper situation

Scott Tynan, the trialist from Notts Forest was in goal for the second half. I thought Alcock did OK, although he didn't have many saves to make.

Everybody on this board seems remarkably quiet about our performance on Saturday. Apart from the result, I thought we turned in a sterling performance. McEvilly looked really good, and Lutel seems to be back on form. The defence looks a lot tighter, too. We really gave Burnley a game and a neutral observer wouldn't have thought there were two divisions between us. Once we get the goalie problem sorted, I reckon we've got a team who will be a real force to be reckoned with this season. Does anybody else agree?

Incidentally, there are already two programmes from Saturday's match up for auction on ebay! Bet you wish you'd bought a dozen now, don't you?

Re: The goalkeeper situation

this goalkeeping fiasco should never have happened,to let one very good keeper go is daft but to let 2 go both of whom played well 4 stanley last season is shear stupidity. only 6 weeks to start of season, and not even a sniff of a decent keeper, jon kennedy,s contract was only discussed with him last xmas and up to 2 weeks ago the club had not talked to him re new contract,he only wanted an extra £100 A WEEK, THIS IS FACT AS I SPOKE TO JK ONLY 3 WEEKS AGO. so now we are left with a situation that the club themselves only have to blame. and it takes at least 3 weeks to adjust to your new team mates and defence, Facts jamie was at stanley for 5 seasons an excellent keeper and crowd pleaser, Fact kennedy was an england semi pro keeper, who would have been the first choice for england as james bittner of exeter and nicky bull ofc hereford utd are now over 23 years of age,to old for the semi pro team. as a supporter for the last 15 years this situation is intolerable to a team of such standing. sorry this may upset some people but we pay to see the best and to have no regular keeper so close to the start of the season STINKS.

Re: The goalkeeper situation

I agree with Wynonie Harris, we gave Burnley a good game on Saturday - the lads did well, McEvilly was brilliant & deserved his man of the match award. Wasn't too impressed by either of the goalies on trial but they didn't have that much to do to be fair. I thought the young lad Carvill did well on the wing but if he's staying they're gonna have to find a kit that fits him!!

Wynonie Harris 12-07-2004 11:22

Re: The goalkeeper situation

The goalkeeping situation is worrying but what's happened has happened and we've got to look forward to the future now. Hopefully, Petkovic will get his work permit from the DOE in the near future. Also, exciting news about two ex-premiership players being lined up for trials - including a former international goalkeeper!

Re: The goalkeeper situation

Gotta say Shotgun, Eric and JC seem to be shrewd businessmen, and they have said that they will not be held to ransom over the wages. OK £100 might not seem a lot and as you rightly say, Jamo has been an excellent servant for the club and JK did a brilliant job last season and is an semi pro international. However, what about Jason Petkovic, and international goalie of some standing, assuming the work permit situation gets sorted, plus they are having a look at others. OK reports I have read on this sight seem to say that both goalies on trial at the weekend match against Burnley weren't much cop, but lets give them a chance to prove themselves. You only have to look at what happened to Telford and the old Accrington Stanley (1962) as well as a number of other clubs to see that unless the finances are right the team may well go under. I am certain that none of us wants that to happen and we certainly don't want to be known as the team that went bust twice!!!

JEFF 12-07-2004 12:36

Re: The goalkeeper situation

Well said Ozzy. O.K. Kennedy only wanted an extra £100 per week, but what was this an extra £100 on. I am sure that the Conference cap wages, are we not only allowed to spend 65% of our previous year's turnover on players and wages. If so we have to be careful. Good to hear that we will have an experienced defender and goalkeeper on trial, that is what we need. I wonder if the goalkeeper is Mark Crossley - he was playing for Sheff Wed in the masters yesterday, Mike Marsh and John Durnin were playing for Liverpool at the same tournament, I cannot think who the defender may be.

Re: The goalkeeper situation

I agree, Jeff, but just to get back to Saturday, what did you think of our performance (goalkeepers excepted)? I'm over the moon at the moment because I think we have the makings of team that's going to be even better than last season's - and we're still adding to it! That, to me, is a truly exciting prospect and I would have thought that a lot of other people felt the same, but apart from AccyMad, everyone seems pretty indifferent. Why?

JEFF 12-07-2004 13:14

Re: The goalkeeper situation

I was very impressed last Saturday, If Evil plays like he did for all of the coming season, then God help the opposition defenders, I thought that Howson was steady at full back, Jagielka was steady, Craney did not look too fit to me, but he showed some decent touches, Hughes was O.K. in defence, all in all it was a very impressive performance which gives me confidence for the coming season. Looking forward to Wednesday, Evil should be up for this game against Rochdale. Back to the goalkeepers maybe David Seaman is coming out of retirement and is on trial at Stanley.

Wynonie Harris 12-07-2004 13:49

Re: The goalkeeper situation

A pretty fair summary of things. I think Craney will come good after further training. The defence didn't make make me nervous the way Stanley defences have in the past.

If it's Seaman that pony-tail will have to go!

Re: The goalkeeper situation

I agree with Mr Harris, the lads played well on Saturday, and the result flattered Burnley who should have been able to do a lot more considering they have a full team. It was great to be back at the IES with a good gate, a cold wind and rain, too. It makes me proud to be an Accringtonian, even if I do have to live in poncey Cheshire!

Re: The goalkeeper situation

Craig Mawson is on a free.. he is a brilliant keeper, he was the morecombe keeper for the last few years.. 24 years old he would be a good signing. he is training with York City to keep his fitness up and that wile he finds a new club, he didnt want to sign a new contract with morecombe.
He is my goalkeeper coach at Burnley and i mentioned to him that stanley didnt have a keeper and he sed he is willing to talk to any club in the conference but his main aim is to get back into the football league within 2 years. (his reason for not signing a new deal at morecombe was that they offered him a 3yr deal and he only wants a 1yr deal)

York city are close to signing former burnley keeper paul crichton on a free from Norwich, he will be the best keeper in the conference if they sign him (top quality he is)

just returned to the UK after touring the Stanley headgear in Canada/Alaska and am busy catching up on all things Stanley. Thanks for the comments on the perfomance against Burnley, Wynonie. On the goal-keeping issue - perhaps there's stuff I've yet to read - but notice that an International goalie and experienced top flight defender are possibly in Jamie's testimonial on July 24th. Is this too simple or d'ya reckon the official site news item has given the clue. After all, they are both in Coley country and I wouldn't be surprised if Mike Marsh was wooed by John over a casual pint somewhere in scouseland !

Re: The goalkeeper situation

Just to lighten up the Goalkeeper situation a joke I found on the web....

Carlo Cudicini was walking down the street one day when he heard screams from a nearby building. He looked up to see smoke billowing from a fourth story window with a woman leaning out holding a baby.

"Help, help!" she screamed, "I need someone to catch my baby!"

A crowd of onlookers had gathered, but no one was confident of catching a baby dropped from such a great height. Then Cudicini stepped forward.

"I’m the Chelsea goalkeeper,” he shouted to the woman. "I’m famous for my safe hands. Drop the baby, for me it will be like catching a ball"

And with that he adopts the classic goalkeepers stance - legs apart and slightly bent at the knees, body slightly bent forward at the waist and with his arms stretched downwards at a slight angle away from his body, with palms facing forward.

"OK!" screams the woman. "I'll trust you. I've no choice! Here she comes!"

So, with the flames roaring all around her, the woman throws the baby from the window. However, the edge of the baby's shawl catches on the woman's watch with the result that the child goes spinning off to one side, tumbling head over heels and with her little arms and legs flailing.

The woman screams and the crowd gasps, all sure that the baby will perish because she will fall out of reach of the man.
Cudicini remains motionless as the child descends, spinning and tumbling further and further away from him as she comes. Then when the baby is only feet from hitting the ground Cudicini dives a full 30 feet across the pavement, catches the baby in his outstretched right hand, pulls her in towards his chest and shields her body with his left hand and arm.

The crowd erupts with cheers and the woman, still in danger herself, nearly faints with relief. Cudicini, still clutching the child to his chest in his right arm, waves to the crowd of onlookers to acknowledge their appreciation. Then, slowly and gracefully, he turns away from them, bounces the baby twice on the ground, and kicks her 60 yards down the road.

Just going back on topic for a moment, I thought Allcock looked ok again tonight. He seems very assured and what little had to do, he seemed to do very well.

He was good in what little he had to do, even their "near misses", I'm sure he had them covered. But what happened to the "trialist" ex-international? Along with the midfielder? Did Fearon cock it up by revealing all too soon?
