Snow Clearing - volunteers required

There is about 6 inches of snow covering all of the pitch. There is far too much for it to be cleared on Saturday morning.

The club staff will be working on clearing the snow during the day, and would like volunteers to come and help in the evening.
The club have suggested 2 or 3 hours, under floodlights, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, until about seven or eight o'clock in the evening. and do the remainder on Saturday morning. (I think it will probably be cleared before Friday.)
I think this is a good idea as it takes away the uncertainty of the game being on for Rotherham's visit. The car parks and roads have been cleared today.

It would be great if you could bring a shovel. Winter clothes, wellies or boots would be to your advantage.

Clearing the pitch of snow also minimises the risk of waterlogging. I as well as most of you are desperate to see The Stanley in action again, especially whilst we are in such good form.

So please come and help.

Come on troops even if you can only manage an hour, 6 of us for 7hrs yesterday an we only got about 10% of the pitch done. The main problem is we need to get it out of the ground as it is piled up to the top of the wall down the main stand side.

Re: Snow Clearing - volunteers required

The original request said club staff were clearing it during the day and volunteers were required in the evenings. No suprise then that few people turn up during the day.

What it really needs is 12-15 lads aged about 16/17 who could use the clearing as a fitness task. Wonder where they could find such a group of lads

Press Release
Thursday 14th Jan 2010

Volunteers Required.

It’s all hands on deck at the Crown Ground as Accrington Stanley rely on all staff, volunteers and even players to shift the snow off the pitch in time for Saturday’s game against Rotherham.

The League 2 side haven’t played a home game since the 28th December 2009 due to the amount of snow and ice on the pitch. And with the amount of postponed games, including the FA Cup 3rd round tie versus Gillingham, only adding pressure to the latter half of the season, the club are determined to overcome the weather conditions.

A handful of volunteers began to help move the snow yesterday, and found the pitch to be in perfect playing condition, but under the snow. After their morning training session, the full squad will also be travelling to the ground to help the staff and volunteers clear the snow off the pitch and stands. The game versus Rotherham is only two days away, and with the ongoing cold climate not doing any favours, it is clear that the club needs as many bodies as possible to help shift the snow.

Chief Executive Rob Heys said “The club has had tremendous support from 6 or so volunteers throughout yesterday and this morning, but due to the sheer quantity of snow, we need as much help as we can get.”

“The pitch is in great condition, as long as we can move all of the snow in time, we will be working around the clock and will no doubt have the flood lights on in the evenings, so if anybody does have time to spare, your support will be much appreciated”

If anybody can offer assistance over the next few days please contact the club on 0871 434 1968 or come down to the Crown Ground.

at the great harwood golf club last season we got some of the people who were on community service to paint and tidy around the golf club why dont the club contact the powers that be and get them down communityu service is what its about and make them have some hard labour instead of standing around Burnley road causing a embarrassment to all whilst waiting for the office to open

these people could have gritted the town cetre also as far as i am concerned come on Rob get a brain ring them and get their labour to help it there its free and they are supervised

I think 0871 are charged at national rate which is daft for a local club. I personally hate non geographic phone numbers. many of us get free local and national calls included with our phone plans but will have to pay extra to call 0871 numbers.

Is 01254 356950 the real phone number?

It is according to this site http://www.saynoto0870.com

Should community service people be used to help private businesses?

It was reported on the radio the other day that they have been clearing snow and ice recently.

maybee its me but i thought the club was a community club what are they doing they help the community and businesses where necassary i am sure they would be aggreeable if it aides accrington conitnue to move forward and that includes the football club as the council own the ground it would seem logical that these people could help with the snow clearing lets face it a bit of hard labour might make them think before committing more crimes and possibly alot of these people may not have evn been to the crown ground they might turn over a new leaf and become fans

Re: Snow Clearing - volunteers required

FANtastic effort by ALL involved!!!:)

Apologises for my lack of involvement, but my "proper job" takes priority in the week.

Yes there a water remover at the ground, but it only works on puddles!!

The main problem is that the ground "thaws" from top to bottom, so whilst the top few inches is soft, the underneath is still frozen and any great volume of water has "nowhere" to go!!. Hence the need to clear the snow!!

Next time your at the Crown look at the "mountain" on the Coppice carpark. Last night it was massive, what it will be like tomorrow???
Shame we can't sell it!!!

Figures crossed for a dry night and morning.

Pitch inspection at 10am. (just to confirm all is in good order) The Iceberg on the carpark is twice the size it was last night, and it will still be there in March.

A massive thanks to all the people who helped out this week. There'd have been no chance of tomorrows game going ahead, without 4 days of graft.

There may be a little bit more work to do in the morning, but on the whole, the ground looks good.

Well done to everybody for their efforts this week not gonna name names but they know who they are,I must admit that when I left at 4 yesterday I was far from optomistic that we would see any footie this weekend but the job has been done. Some jobs still need to be done tomorrow, ie all the water needs to go back on to the toilets around the ground so some facilities may be limited tomorrow depending on what we find, but up to press we have managed to sort all the leaks in the club house and the changing rooms are now defrosted, water tight and the heating is back up and running once again lads and lasses bloody well done.

Stanley v Rotherham
Saturday 16th Jan 2010

Pitch inspection 10am.

There will be a pitch inspection ahead of this afternoon's match against Rotherham United.

The heavy rainfall this morning has caused some problems with the playing surface this morning and the match referee will be at the ground to assess the situation at 10am this morning.

It is sometimes the little things that make the difference!!

Stanley v Rotherham
Saturday 16th Jan 2010

Match off - waterlogged pitch.

This afternoon's match against Rotherham has been postponed due to a waterlogged pitch.

The decision by the match referee was made due to large areas of standing water in all areas of the pitch. Speaking about the decision chief executive Rob Heys said "We would like to thank everyone who came down and helped us to remove the snow from the pitch over the last few days, it really summed up what Accrington Stanley is all about. We had everyone on the pitch at one time or another, from supporters and players, management and staff, the youth team, community lads, even passing dog walkers!

"Without really wanting to single anyone out we should mention Mick from Redash with his JCB which was a fantastic help, our own Bill Holden, and supporters like Paul, Russell and Dale who all spent hours over the last few days scooping up snow and taking it out in barrows. Everyone really got stuck in to get the job done and it is such a shame that we have been caught out by heavy rainfall overnight.

"That said removing the snow helps to ensure that we can get Tuesday night's FA Cup match against Gillingham on, if the snow had thawed on the pitch there would be even more water on the playing surface which again would have caused problems."

A date for the rearranged fixture will be announced shortly.

Nice that the club have put this "Thank you" on for the fans!!!
