I'm hoping McConville can do a Grant n prove me wrong, cos never had Grant down fer a major goalscorer on the previous seasons showing.;)

Nobody had Symes down as a major goalscorer after the loan spell he had before signing!

Re: Fans Mindset for this season

This season is different for me.

Every August since we've been in the FL, it has always been a matter of avoiding relegation come May and if we finished a few places higher or had secured safety by Easter, it was a bonus.

That was also the case last year when we lost five of our first six games, but then the SOS Appeal began, Bobby and Symes started to look like a great pairing at Bury and Billy came off the bench to head the winner against Darlington.

From that point onwards until 60 minutes into the Rochdale game, we had the best (and most entertaining) Stanley team that I have seen in my 25 years at the Crown Ground. We were chasing a playoff place and there was even hope of automatic promotion - we were that good.

Coley & JB did a magnificent job with a paltry playing budget and young, hungry players. And once again they have hardly any budget for players and we have concentrated on youth, of which I am particularly optimistic about our Liverpool Youth team midfielders.

I can't go back to hoping that we will merely avoid relegation. Coley showed the way last year and I'm very excited about the new season and optimistic that we will at least have a chance of a playoff place until Easter.

Saturday can't come quick enough for me!

Many share your optimism WR !...only hope that the image of our Club improves to match the efforts of our Manager, Assistant and Team, which in turn will ensure an ever-increasing flow of 'Fans'
through the Turnstiles !!...
('Stanley Hope' suggested that to me !)

John and Jimmy have done every season we have been in the league. If I am not mistaken, Stanley have been favourites for the drop every season they have been in the league. I say keep on predicting us to go (so called experts of course) and let the team and management do the talking on the pitch. A record of improvement year on year speaks for itself. Who knows where the club will be in 12 months time?

:tongueout to the experts :alright: to the team and management

Interesting report on that match

Quote:

26 April 2007
Liverpool's class of 2007 wrote their names into Anfield history by retaining the FA Youth Cup at, of all places, Old Trafford.
Steve Heighway's under-18s lifted the trophy after a dramatic penalty shoot-out against United as the 'Theatre of Dreams' became the Theatre of Nightmares for a generation of Mancunians.

Having lost the first leg at Anfield 2-1, the boys went into the game with a mountain to climb.
Spirit, maturity and poise would be needed to prevail, and that's exactly what Heighway got from his fledgling stars.
Liverpool had to be patient on the night, with the game getting off to a cagey start. United doubled up on dangerous wingers Jimmy Ryan and Ray Putterill, making it hard for the visitors to penetrate.
Youth Cup veteran Craig Lindfield could perhaps have done better on the one occasion Ryan did manage to get the ball into the box during the first half.

Liverpool's rhythm was nearly disrupted further four minutes after the restart when Febian Brandy found himself one-on-one with 'keeper David Roberts. It took a fine save to keep the scoresheet blank.

It seemed finally we had a game on our hands when two minutes later Lindfield crafted a marvellous chance inside the United box. The Reds number nine was denied by the post, with strike-partner Ryan Flynn unable to direct the rebound into the net.

But then came the moment the thousands of travelling Merseysiders had been waiting for when Robbie Threlfall, who scored an own goal to let United back into the contest 10 days earlier, went from zero to hero by sending an unstoppable left-foot volley into the back of Ron-Robert Zieler's net.
With the away-goals rule not applying in Youth Cup games, the tie was heading for extra-time.

Putterill had different ideas, mind, and he nearly doubled the Reds' advantage on the night in the closing stages with a sublime curling shot which crept agonisingly wide of Zieler's goal.

Liverpool perhaps came closest to clinching victory in extra-time when Lindfield turned the United defence inside-out before lashing a low drive goalwards. But, for the second time of the evening, the young marksman was denied by the post.

With the 120 minutes up, United won the toss, with Magnus Eikrem stepping up to take the first penalty only to be denied by a fine save from Roberts.
Seven successful kicks later it was 4-3, meaning Sam Hewson had to score or the cup was going to Merseyside. He missed, and Liverpool were going home with their third FA Youth Cup.
