Winning at Wycombe

Attachment 17507 Attachment 17510 Attachment 17511 Attachment 17512 Attachment 17513For the first time in 40 years of following the Reds in one form or another I finally got to see them win in the football league for the first time. In the early 70's you couldn't have believed that the Stanley of the Lancashire Combination days would end up back in the league. Jimmy Hinksman was the manager at the time. The famous Jimmy Hinksman!!! We travelled to every game home and away, cup and league up to 1974 on the team coach to places like Milnthorp Corinthians (we won 9-1, this may still be a club record), Darwen, Bacup and the wastelands of Wigan Rovers. These days its good to see the team so well supported at away games. Living in Norfolk there are many chances to get to a game. On Saturday the noise, enthusiasm and just damn good fun generated by the ultras was worth the trip on its own. When they run out of songs they just sing anything...great stuff. The familiar chant of "gyppo" (probably against some P.C. rule or other) brought back happy memories of trips to our main rivals in 1973, St Helens whose long haired player suffered endlessly from that same chant. Whoever was on the drum at Wycombe...well done. The atmosphere was great, the football was .........but the win was terrrific!! Norfolkred |

Re: Winning at Wycombe
Yep the Lincoln game is the current club record win. One of the earliest signs of the Coley revolution after losing 1-0 to the same opponents earlier in the season if memory serves. :)

Re: Winning at Wycombe
Thanks for these pics and the reminiscences. And there's a good shot of the drum at the beginning of the video highlights of the match on the BBC. :)
Slightly better than 9-1 was the 10-1 win against Lincoln United in Unibond (Northern) League Division One on 16 Oct 1999 in Coley and Jimmy's first full season. Does anyone remember who the scorers were? 1999! That means that John and Jimmy are entering the third decade of them managing the Reds! |

Re: Winning at Wycombe
Remember it well, as I got into an argument with a female Lincoln director in the club bar afterwards, who reckoned that their poor goalie had been subjected to disgraceful abuse by Stanley fans! :D
