BBC Sport - Football - Accrington Stanley's archaeological dig

For those who didn't see Late Kick Off, UClan's arcaeology team have dug up the pitch at Peel Park and got some interesting finds. A hinge, a red/white bolt, the bottom of a goalpost and a 1918 coin.

Nice to hit the headlines for a more positive reason!

me neither, although the Stanley link suddenly made it sound all the more appealing. As good as it was for the kids, the thought of a rusty bolt head and a four inch section of perimeter rail won't have me rushing to Ebay!

On a linked note to that numerous people have expressed interest in finding out more about a Stanley crest thingie that features on the front of the Breedons Encyclopedia. The picture shows an apparent large stone artifact with the FA crest on and a notation regarding commemorating a number of years of the Football League. Due to its apparent size and the fact that it looks to be made of stone it should have been a remembered piece and I often wondered where it disappeared to when the ground turned to dust. Closer inspection actually reveals that it is probably only a few inches high (deceiving picture) and was more than likely just a little wooden ornament. Was probably stamped into the ground and would have rotted long ago.

If it was wood Mac it would have been burnt, looking at the snippet of the dig I saw on BBC northwest news last night, looked like they were digging in the vicinity of where the wood from the old stand was flamed

this is the item I'm on about, like I said though, it probably got trampled into the pitch at the time. The photo is clearly taken long after the ground fell into disrepair yet the main stand didnt burn down until around '72 (I think, may be wrong though). The only other hope would have been that whoever took the picture had 'posed' the photo and then took the artefact with them. Would be a shame to have lost something like that.

Yep, you're right, Rob, main stand burned down early in '72. The Huncoat End terracing you can see in the background was demolished in early '73, just before the club returned to the ground to play a one-off match against Nelson in March of that year. I would say that shot was taken in the late '60's.

I went to Peel Park between 1979 and 1983. At some point we did some digging and found a large concrete piece of what looked like a stanley crest in the trees that were at the Peel Park Pub side of the field between the dresssing rooms and the school. I am curious if anything ever game of it.

would you be able to pinpoint the spot Gareth? Could be a good opportunity to request to the school that they look again in that particular place. If anything is there, and was dug up last time, then it'd be fantastic to pull it out and relocate it somewhere (The all-new IK stadium?)

Its been 25 years, and the area looks like its been cleared since then. But it was in those trees, when they were a lot smaller.

I think,no matter who in this wrangle likes who is irrelevant this ownership crap needs sorting P.D.Q. Coley n the lads deserve all the help they can get, the incredible achievements this season merit that.

Not being supersticious or anything, but it seems when we hit the headlines in a bad way our on pitch performances improve.
Over the weekend things were good and we drew 1-1 with Aldershot.
This week more bad news, Ilyas on Radio Lancs etc and we thrash Hereford 4-0.
Let the bad stuff roll on until the summer, it's only 7 more games!!
