Penalties

Does anyone remember our last penalty? By my reckoning it's 50 league games without one. We must be getting close to a record. Anyone know what the record is?

I've had a Google but can't find anything. Ironically the one thing I did find was the first ever Football league penalty was scored against Accrington in 1891.

Mark - it was actually 49, because we got one on the Friday after the Southend game (which was on the Tuesday), at Macclesfield ..........

We had dozens last season - Sunbeds converted about 9 or 10, didn't he? Which was one reason why he was almost our leading scorer :D

Only thing I found was a reference to the record for the Premier League only: Middlesbrough went 50 league games without a spot-kick between September 29, 2001 and 11 January 2003. Their opponents in both games were Southampton.

Sure I saw it in an old football facts book that we were the first club to sign a foreign player and first club to receive a red card as well.

The idea behind using red and yellow cards to indicate dismissals and bookings was that of Englishman Ken Aston. Having previously refereed at the highest level he was in charge of referees at the 1966 World Cup finals in England. The infamous sending off of Antonio Rattin in the quarter-final between Argentina and England, when Aston to go on the field to remonstrate with the player to leave the pitch, made him think that their had to be a better system of allowing a referee to make his intentions clearer to a player who might not speak the same language. As he drove away from the stadium the solution came to him - "As I drove down Kensington High Street, the traffic light turned red. I thought, 'Yellow, take it easy; red, stop, you're off'."

Ken Aston in his refereeing days.
The idea behind red card and yellow cards was to allow both players and fans to clearly understand when players had been dismissed or booked.
The cards were first used in the 1970 World Cup finals in Mexico. The first player in the Football League to see red was David Wagstaff, playing for Blackburn Rovers at Orient on Saturday October 2nd 1976. Later that afternoon George Best, playing for Fulham at Southampton, was also red-carded. For a period between the 1980/81 and 1987/88 season the use of red and yellow cards was suspended in the Football League

Perhaps it might have been first team to have a player sent off - I've done a bit of Googling and I'm struggling to come to an answer on the first player to be sent off in the football league?

The book I had with these facts is long gone and I'm curious now if my memory is right - anyone know anything?

Stanley were the first club to get penalised for paying players

We played in the first Floodlit match, I think from memory it was against Blackburn Olympic

We had the first heated stand (Directors box area on the Burnley Road Stand at Peel Park.

If these facts are wrong blame your cat
