Nice and Early Shrewsbury Town Match Thread.........

Well this looks like a massive game for our visitors in particular.

Could be the largest away following since Bradford in August.

I just hope Jacobsen & Gornell get decent receptions, is that too much to ask??

As for the team.......... who knows who will start, I would go with this.

Dunbavin
Lindfield
Toto
Murphy
Mcintyre
Hughes
Joyce
Barnett
Devitt
Grant
Amond

Subs
Nicholls
Willis
Hatfield
Craney
Guthrie

They must be hoping he can help em stay in the division? he aint done badly back here. It may be a good thing, cos he wouldn't be here next season, so perhaps a chance fer one of the young uns?

He has been class for me.

Far too good for League Two, let's just hope he doesn't end up at Spotland.........

Re: Nice and Early Shrewsbury Town Match Thread.........

Blimey, plenty of ex player connections on both sides this Saturday. :)

Kev Mac will definitely get a very good reception from us, Bavo will get some stick, not sure what sort of reception Devitt will get to be honest. We also had Nicholls on loan last season but he didn't get a game.

Terry has hit a bit of real form in the last two or three games after a bit of a dodgy spell. Joe hasn't been as good in the last couple of games, he's one who is looking a bit edgy as we get closer to achieving our aim.

Nice to hear some visitors enjoy the new ground!
We've now got what we didn't have, but lost a bit of what we had with the ground change.

Will be happy to match our promotion rivals results on Sat,so wouldn't begrudge the likes of Stanley 3 points, even at this crucial time.
However, form is good at the moment,I think we might sneak it by the odd goal, 2-1,and will probably have to wait until next week to go up(fingers crossed).

No offence to Stanley, but sod that. I want to secure promotion saturday and give ourselves a (slim) chance of chasing down Swindon for the title!

We had enough chances to win this game comfortably, there must of been a couple of thousand from Shrewsbury. I enjoyed the game, an inspired substitution, hughes goal was good

Fer my money the best Div2 game ive seen this season, Shrews took the lead thanks to a blind linesman, But both sides put in a very good performance, The Shrews will get automatic promotion n deservedly so in my book, n the Reds matched em. Thought Toto, Amond, Joyce, were outstanding, but everyone played their part, The Shrews fans were good lads, n a credit to the club. all in all, one happy cashy.:)

What a good game !...Shrews played some neat football..
Stanley showed all the guts and spirit that we admire so much.
MOM.. Craig Lindfield who ran himself into the ground for the team, made some really important interceptions, and supported the front men so well. Must mention Padraig as well who outjumped their tall Centre-back on several occasions and led the line excellently !.
And then there was.. oh Blow it !!..they all did us proud this afternoon !... bring on Crawley ( Who, like Shrewsbury Town just might learn that complacency can turn into torment at 'The Crown').

What a performance ! sheer bliss to watch. Well done Stanley , you put up a good fight. I was talking to a couple from Shrewsbury before game, they said quote " no offence to you here , but when we win here today ..................." They thought they got it in the bag . A draw wa a good result but I thought we were the better side in first half, even though we were a goal down.My heart sank when Guthrie came on , thought we were throwing game away, but to his credit , he has slightly improved ..he looks where ball is going now. Though Devitt when subbed dragged his feet to leave the pitch. Good game all round, proud of them all.

There will/may be a separate thread on this, but, if I am right, he manages a kids team and they - and their mums, dads, aunties, uncles, friends, neighbors - turned up to watch Macca today!!!

I may though, not be right on this.........

Kevin Mc's little boy was taking part in Stanley Trust's grassroots team initiative on the pitch at half time today and Kev manages the team (Runcorn linnets). I have no idea if that's anything to do with the captaincy though! Lol

Heard some Shrewsbury fans in the pub prior to the game saying '...we'll walk this one and be straight on that pitch after the whistle.'

If not for their keeper having a blinder we'd have put 3 or 4 past them.

Re: Nice and Early Shrewsbury Town Match Thread.........

Thoroughly absorbing game with both sides creating chances first half we were probably just outshone second half the more likely side to score, the team is now beginning to knit together and they look comfortable on the ball pity it's near the end of the season but at least the management will have more food for thought on contracts and the kind of players they need to bring in over the Summer.

Hi Guys, Shrews fan here. Great match and fair play, You guys were one of the better teams weve come up against this season, thought you deserved it prob more than us today. Think alot of shrews fans thought it would be alot easier than it was but i knew it was going to be a tough one. Good luck for the rest of the season and if we make it to Lge 1, hope we manage to stay and Accy join us, def one of my favourite places to come.

We try not to let them out of Shropshire, but these idiots must have slipped through the net:(

Enjoyable game, very happy to get a point.Torquay, and Creepy could have no complaints with our last three opponents who have had "nothing to play for" that's for sure! All the best (especially against Creepy!)

Accrington Stanley - Shrewsbury Town

Possession
55% - 45%

Shots
18 - 13

On Target
12 - 3

2nd in the league? You're having a laugh :)

I can only echo the comments praising the quality of the match, it was probably the best game I've seen all season.
Indeed Shrewsbury played some nice passing football and kept the ball for long periods, but did little with it. Conversely we made the most of our possession, created many chances and got behind their defence time after time.
Had their goalkeeper not had his game of the season we'd have walked it three or four goals to one.
Every game we play now is just increasing the excitement for next season.

The stats are certainly well in your favour and i don't think they give an innacurate picture of the match, i cant remember the last time we were as uncreative as that, certainly not in the past 4 months anyway.Thing about our keeper is he has- up until recently been a bit of a worry and got plenty of stick on our forum but give him his dues has kept us in the last 3 matches, he made some good saves against Port fail but surpassed that against you guys. As nice as we played at times, i thought Accy created the better chances and on another day we'd of been skulking back to the shire with our tail between our legs.

Re: Nice and Early Shrewsbury Town Match Thread.........

I agree with previous comments that this was probably the best game of the season at The Crown. It was a great atmosphere with the Shrews fans turning out in good numbers but the Stanley Ultras too were close to their best and gave excellent support. Shrewsbury started confidently and for the first 20 minutes looked like a well organised team playing slick passes and looking calm under pressure. However, Stanley were clearly up for the game and started to match the Shrews mid away through the first half and then took the initiative. The Shrews goal came a bit against the run of play and it was a scruffy shot on the turn by Gornell that may have taken a deflection of the Stanley defender in close attendance. By half time Stanley should have scored at least a couple of goals with bad misses by Joyce and Barnett and a bit of luck when one rolled across their goal mouth! The Shrews seem to come out in the second half seemingly content to hold their one goal advantage and to their credit Stanley continued to press hard for a goal. Paddy was a bit unlucky to find the Shrews keeper in very good form. The goal by Hughes was superb and it drifted away from the keeper as it flew into the side of the goal! The ref was watching a different game! He made odd decisions but got no help from his linesmen. Stanley also had a good shout for a penalty in the first half when one of our forwards was clearly pushed in the back. (Ashley Young would have buried himself!) Overall I would imagine the stats were much in Stanley's favour and in the end we should have won. I think we hit the post and bar four times in the match! However, it was a good point against a side who will get promoted and shows the continued improvement under Cooky and Liam.

mab 23-04-2012 18:06

Re: Nice and Early Shrewsbury Town Match Thread.........

Taken off blue & amber (shrews forum).... [B]Re: Accrington vs Shrewsbury Match Thread Nsiala was outstanding; I thought Collins started well but Nsiala got the better of him and he won nothing in the 2nd half. The draw was fair but we'd have lost in the 2nd half but for Neal - easily our man of the match. Felt a bit flat at the end but that was because I thought we were going to close the gap on Swindon. A good point in the end and we're another step closer.

Was my first visit to Accrington and I loved it. Very friendly & generous club - the PA announcer saying we'd have a lap of honour if we went up (I know they wanted to keep people off the pitch but how many clubs would offer that on their own patch? Most would just warn fans to keep off.) and offering the consolation at the end that we only needed another point.

It struck me that in many ways Accrington represent a lot of the best aspects of lower league football but, in another sense, much of what we're trying to leave behind. I wish them well anyway.

Made a great weekend of it up there and will do it again - though hopefully visiting Preston next season instead!

Re: Nice and Early Shrewsbury Town Match Thread.........

I can't say they were all great because obviously the ones arrested and the idiots in the Crown after the game and around town that night were complete tools, but I suppose its only to be expected out of 1600 plus fans.

Having said that, it was a minority and Shrewsbury fans have always been one of the larger fanbases that I like. They travel in numbers (even back in the Conference days), make some noise, mingle well and frequently seek out Stanley fans to chat with. They are also one of the few bigger clubs that in the main respect us rather than belittle us. Good old Saloppers. As Welsh as Hereford but we'll class 'em as English due to their immense good eggery.
