Speaking to my sister (who lives in Coventry) earlier this year that I'd get the niece & nephew to a Stanley game against Cov, only thing was I'd expected it to be a league 1 fixture & not a pre season friendly.

Another decent home friendly = good news :)

Re: Stanley sent to Coventry

Great to see home pre-season friendlies being announced against good opposition who I would expect will bring decent followings, a chance for players to get used to each other, the new pitch surface, fans a chance to watch a home game and money into the coffers from the gate.

All good to me

Stanley and Coventry were 6 divisions apart(i think) 11 years ago, but now it's only one!
I don't think Stanley have ever played Coventry in either league, cup or friendly.

maccawozzagod 21-05-2012 23:45

Re: Stanley sent to Coventry

played them in the league 4 times Winstanley.

1925-26 won 3-1 at home and lost 2-1 away
1959-60 lost 2-0 at home and 2-1 away.

Their fans aren't happy!! Some of them see this game as a standing of how far they have sank  Lest they forget they are only one division above us!! :)

Re: Stanley sent to Coventry

We were looking quite composed until a dodgy penalty and an offside goal in quick succession knocked the wind out of our sails. Lindfield had a lot of joy on the overlap - we are just crying out for a 6 ft + striker to knock all these crosses in .. the lad in number 13 Mollineaux ? Looked very good on the ball and getting forward

mab 04-08-2012 18:28

Re: Stanley sent to Coventry

:) Stanley started the brighter of the two teams and had 1or2 good chances with out threatening the keeper imhp.but then toto got in a hand bag sitchuation pushing, ref had words and with in a min he gave a soft pen away and a couple of mins latter didn't deal with a throu ball 0-2 ,so after 20mins contest over. don't get me wrong it was still an enjoyable game with the new signing having a part of the action . but not a patch on the st mirron game:)

Stanley 1 - 4 Coventry, no further comment required :o. But when all's said & done it was a friendly, Coventry have only just dropped down into the Championship & most of the comments from those who've been to games is positive, roll on the new Season proper I say. :)

Still optimistic, despite the scoreline. Thought we played some good stuff in the last 20 minutes or so and displayed the sort of potential that could take us places next season. Shocking gate yet again, but the stayaways didn't really miss a lot.

Cov players were fouling the second the ball was kicked.

Re: Stanley sent to Coventry

Fer me our defence today, Had no keeper directing/telling em, unlike against St Mirren, After all there all young n need some direction!! The new lad from Reading came on,scored a cracker, n looked very useful. think he will be a great acquisition when he gets more used to his new mates, Think Lindfield did very well again at right back, overall 4-1 looks like a thrashing, but fer me that was not the case, Am feeling very positive fer this season.:)

He played ok, scored a couple of the Coventry goals. Coventry looked a really decent side.

Poor attendance again, as was last week against St Mirren. Hopefully they'll turn up when the season starts.

Would hope so too, Bernard. With the excellent team that Cooky's assembling, regular gates of 2,000+ is surely not too much to ask for?

At least with the Bratford game it'll be +2 ;)

I think that's right. It looks like he's got some good young players. It could be an interesting season, and hopefully a successful one.

Me and Cashy both have a tenner on at 100/1 for Stanley to lift the championship, so it better be! :D ;)

Re: Stanley sent to Coventry

Quite enjoyed yesterday decent workout against good opposition which always helps, hard to judge players overall although Karl Sheppard looked to have a good touch and took his goal well and great too see Podge back:)

We did look a little suspect at the back with a few soft goals conceded but again we have a little bit more depth to the squad to change things if needed.

I hope we put our strongest team out on Wednesday night as I think game time is now crucial to gel the players before next Saturday.

football19 05-08-2012 08:26

Re: Stanley sent to Coventry

To be fair I thought acci dominated the game for the first 20 mins, fullbacks joining in,midfield moving the ball around, playing a high line and pressing the ball.We were dealing with there big man, little man up front and they were just playing the long ball game.
Turning point really ,was dean turning his ankle and the 10 minute period after,in which we went 3-0 down before we regained our shape and composure
Once we settled again,we once again played ok,but the game was gone.
Young lads learn from these things and we were more than a match for Coventry.
Sheppard did ok,and molyneux did well (always rated him) at left back.
I am very positive about the way we are playing, although I feel there won't be many draws this season,it will be a win or loss!!!

football19 05-08-2012 08:37

Re: Stanley sent to Coventry

Pendle, I hope we don't lose sight of Wednesday's game, which is a reserve team cup final. It will be against utds youngsters so I would definitely play our fringe players to give them a opportunity to impress the gaffer, and stake a claim for a first team shirt,in front of a decent crowd.
I know it's a cup final,but we shouldn't get carried away----then again,everyone likes beating utd !

He just landed funny and should have come off straight away, but young lads sometimes have no sense, and tried to run it off.Think he forgot he's had a major opp on it !,
Competition for places all over the park sometimes make players make daft calls, but then again he's just daft

I missed something here think - who's Molyneux?

Re: Stanley sent to Coventry

Lee molyneux came on at left back.Came through evertons academy at the same time as dean.
Sure he played at youth level for England.
Went to Southampton, but I think his career just stalled.
Unbelievable left foot, and a dead ball expert.
Was one tipped for the top,but think things went a bit pear shaped..

lancsdave 05-08-2012 10:05

Re: Stanley sent to Coventry

Cooky will have learnt more from yesterdays game by getting beat than the ones they have won.

I'm never convinced by going through pre-season winning every game, false sense of security going in to the first serious game and end up getting tonked. Best to learn now then when there are no points at stake :)

Only there for last 25 minutes yesterday but was suprised to see the back 4 of Coventry seemed to consist of 4 members of the USA basketball team :D

Cheers. Sounds good!

That would free Liddle to play midfield - alongside the other 9 midfielders :D

I'm sure that's right Dave. I think Paul Cook is putting together what could be come a really decent side.

He has shown great confidence in both the matches I have seen him feature. Never seems to play the easy ball going forward, but wants to leave his opponent on the floor, and it doesn't always come off, but it's great to see when it does, nevertheless.
