Cardiff match thread
With Cardiff's great victory against Man City today what does it all mean for us on Wednesday night - a full house? We all know the answer to that one. Malky Mackay has spent 28 million on 5 new players this season after running away with the Championship last season, so whether or not he fields a "weakened" side Stanley will be up against it big time. Maybe its a match we could do without just now considering our current position, but as Malky was quoted as saying to his players before the City game, "every player has to look at their opposite number and think "you're not going to be better than me today"". It worked for them, but..............

It's a chance to claim a Premiership Scalp regardless of who they put out, advance in the competition, claim more prize money plus another chance to pull one of the Big Six in the 3rd Round.

Don't disagree and at the same time you can also see why some bigger teams field second strings to focus on the PL catch 22 but for us may also kick start the season

Re: Cardiff match thread
Guess the only incentive for the 'minnows' is gate money from matches against Premier League teams. But if the clubs share it, then, financially, Stanley might have preferred the game in Cardiff?
Otherwise it does seem like a potentially risky venture, if any players pick up an injury, for no guarantee of income. |

WELL DONE. Same again on Sat please.:)

Re: Cardiff match thread
1600 is a joke for a big game against a premier league side.....where the hell is everyone?
We are looking like a bad side fair enough but still! where are all the people that watched us win the conference or the unibond for that matter! Last time I saw them it was outside the town hall saying how good it was to have the town team back in the league! Well done to the stay aways because you will soon see us relegated, maybe you will all start coming again when its bamber bridge on boxing day! |
Re: Cardiff match thread
Good performance by the Reds tonight in view of the injury/suspension situation. JB was trying to do a Chelsea by not starting with any out and out attackers and it worked for a long time. It's a pity their big useless 8 million quid n0.9 had to go off, because his even bigger replacement lump was a real handful and made all the difference, but Tom can take enormous credit for making the "waste of money" look like a conference player. Up to their first goal Stanley looked the better team in the second half and started to put their defence under real pressure, but after they scored they were able to relax and play their clever possession footy, or "taking the ****", if you prefer.
Whoever gave out the MOM award needs to be told you don't give it to the one player who constantly gives away the ball in dangerous attacking positions, and I had that Gordon Lightfoot moment yet again when it was announced....... " I just don't get it". Big minus tonight was our terrible set piece/free kick delivery standard, but overall I feel pretty confident we can get out of the current mess. |
Re: Cardiff match thread
I thought that Stanley played well tonight and came out of the match with quite a lot of credit. It was a moment of class by Maynard that took the game away from us and we were just asleep for the second goal scored within a minute of the first! 2 - 0 seemed a bit harsh. After that Cardiff just passed the ball around in order to make us chase shadows. The central defence pairing is looking better every match and again Aldred was my man of the match for Stanley. Until they scored Joyce played much better. Carver did well when he came on and I would like to see him paired up front with Naismith. The emergency keeper looked confident and dominated the box. The young number 23 did well when he came on too. If we can reproduce this form, effort and cohesive play against division 2 sides then I see no reason why we can't make a move up the league. Some great support tonight from The Ultras behind the goal.
ON STANLEY ON!:hothothot |

Re: Cardiff match thread
Difficult to judge tonight relative to last 3 games because they're a Premier League side, who had good players, were well organised and pressed when they didn't have the ball.
We competed well despite the gulf in class, and felt match turned on one moment of top quality from their 23, and we switched off for the 2nd. Up to then, we'd done a reasonable job in containing them although they kept pressing and switching the play. Is perhaps a little unfair to judge from tonight, but worrying for me that we've only had 1 shot on target in last 2 matches, haven't posed any real goal threat, had no sustained pressure and haven't scored in last 3. Added to this, we've not looked like keeping a clean sheet. New keeper look assured and should help. 3 points with bonus of none conceded is a must for me on Sat |
Re: Cardiff match thread
Have to agree with Darwen Red, our near namesake. 1617 is a scandal, especially when the Shrimpers pick up 5300 and the sponds from being live on Sky.
Poor old JB really does need all the help/support/appreciation he can get..all our really experienced players hurt/ suspended- a tiny squad etc etc. But even with those caveats we saw so much to encourage us tonight. The defence looked rock solid for so much of the game- Atko and even moreso Aldred were monumental. For me Aldred has been absolutely magnificent since he arrived- a real find. Keep going Tom! Murphy as ever was all heart. Richardson was much improved and more assertive. Very reassured by Marcus Betinelli- relieved that his first name isn't Sky!! Thought he was excellent- bossed the box, confident catching- quick distribution- welcome aboard Marcus- time at Stanley is a real badge of honour- you'll soon realise this!!! Really liked the look of young Mahoney as well- he seemed fearless and created chances when he was on. As for Naismith- he's skilful, works tremendously hard BUT- I feel he should concentrate on keeping focused when he loses the ball - he gets too frustrated too quickly and needs to work on his psychology- and also sometimes- be a little less selfish- flicks etc are delightful but often I feel there's one too many and that's when we lose the ball. But the raw material is there to be sure- a really exciting prospect. But one final Q- if you disregard the Clayton End- (which I would never do) we're beginning to suspect there are more Darreners turning up than Accringtonians- that MUST change. Keep the faith and really get behind James and the boys Saturday next. |

Re: Cardiff match thread
The gate of 1617 is worrying. The club need to look at how games like this are promoted as its been veer glow key and almost slipped under the radar. I remember other cup games, Newcastle, Notts Forest etc where there was a pre match build up, decent atmosphere and a sense of anticipation in the ground. Tonight was flat.
Really got to get into local folk to support the team as it feels lethargy setting in if we can't muster ourselves for turn out to see Premier League players at our ground. |

Accy can proud of their display tonight, more than matched Cardiff for 55 minutes until their class showed. Plenty of positives to take out of the performance and should give the lads a confidence boost for Saturday.

Re: Cardiff match thread
Sorry but same old same old for me.
Fair enough the keeper and 2 CBs had decent games but to call that Cardiff XI a premiership side is kidding ourselves - it was a team of 2nd and 3rd string players - we'll player stronger teams in the league this season. We sat to deep with no out ball so we could never get out of defence - this seems to be a common issue this season not just tonight. Its a long season ahead |

Re: Cardiff match thread
Sorry Sam but even their second string is a top 6 championship side, Cardiff have vast resources that we could only dream of. We competed well for 55 minutes and they had one touch of magic that swung the game in their favour.
If you honestly think we will play better teams in League 2 you are wrong IMO. Why are people finding negatives in a performance that was solid and effort levels were excellent? Get behind the players. |
Re: Cardiff match thread
I think i saw one Cardiff fan wearing a red "Bluebirds" shirt!
|
Re: Cardiff match thread
Have to agree with Sam,our game plan seemed to be sit deep, don't let them get behind us and keep our defensive shape of two narrow banks of four.
We never got after them, indeed we let them have the ball upto the last third and at times,it must have felt like a training session for them. You practice defence v attack on a regular basis, and when we got the ball, most of the time,we went long, give it away and they started again. Positives,we kept our shape(far too deep tho),the keepers performance and finally young Mahoneys debut. For a 16 year old,he looked our most effective offensive player. Was told about him prior to his debut and he didn't disappoint - potentially the best talent to come out of the youth system !!!! |

Not sure he isn't better than anyone sat on the bench in his position. Loan players are important to the club, treat them badly and you run out of clubs who will lend them to you. I seem to remember Kevin Long having a nightmare when he first arrived. |

Re: Cardiff match thread
It's hard to put a judgement on it in such a cup tie but we could of had a chance tonight.
Keeper was superb and looks really good ! Really really need to keep him for a decent size loan! The defence (mainly Aldred) was very solid but I lost count of how many times Atkinson couldn't even pass to a player in red or even up the line. Luke Clarke was awful at right back and in my opinion he is awful altogether and not a football league player! Yes , he's not a right back but last night he couldn't pass on the floor and he had numerous chances to cross the ball in but couldn't beat the first man or it beat the last man in the stand ! Richardson except from his chasing of the ball in the last ten minutes was awful again. You can tell him and Joyce don't like working together and what's even worse they can't. He was absolutely terrified most times to even put a challenge in and didn't even get close to pressure Cardiff players who loved having all that space. He can't cross the ball either , I remember one cross where it was frankly embarrassing. Naismith just carries the team attacking wise and just gets frustrated at times how slow others react around him when he's trying to create ! He definitely puts the effort in and hopefully when webbers back , with them two at full pace it'll cause defenders in league 2 massive problems! Can you imagine if we still had Rommy, him and Rommy on both wings would of been awesome this season! The problem is our attack , we have no good wingers except Naismith as the lad with no knees can't run and take on defenders to save his life and we have no one who can shoot on goal or put a good cross in either ! Forward wise we need another league 2 striker , with another an webber we at least have a positive forward position! You just look at squads in this league and we are massively behind them !! Wet here's only so much JB can do without any dollar , I'm just hoping we can get some from somewhere to get a few players on wages or loans ! |
